The resume has a fairly low scannability. The resume also contains no vectors, so it
makes it hard for the readers to follow its content. Visual hierarchy is presented in the resume,
but it is weak. The body of the resume follows good consistency, using the same verb tenses
under the same experience. The resume provides good information regarding the persons
experience as an engineer. It shows education and affiliations at the bottom of the resume, which
can be put before the profession experience because the licensure status of the applicant may be
more important to employers since they show that the applicant as an engineer is well certified.
According to the guidelines provided in Paul Andersons Obtaining a Job, the resumes text
should be drafted to highlight the qualifications that will most appeal to the employer. In this
case, the qualifications would be the applicants certificates. The resume uses action words that
create images of the person actually in the process of working, which is good. The resume does
not contain an objective statement, and it saves space for details of the applicants experiences.
The general rhetoric of the resume is based on ethos of his experiences.

Terex Aerial Platforms (AWP) is looking for Manufacturing Engineer I in Oklahoma

City. They are a company with a strong safety first mentality, team based culture, respect for the
individual and high integrity. The companys corporate culture is formal and creative. This job
prefers people with specialized professional knowledge of engineering theory, principles, and
practices of mechanical or industrial engineering. The job also requires knowledge of AutoCAD
or equivalent programs. Soft skills such as working with a team is also preferred in regards to
working cooperatively with internal and external customers. Sufficient human relation skills,
communication, for example, is also needed in order to convey technical concepts to others. The
job requires technical writing skills to prepare product specifications, test, and process
documentation. Other soft skills include ability to walk and stand on a continuous basis, to lift
medium weight objects, and sufficient hand-arm-eye coordination. My cover letter need to
appeal to the companys value of teamwork and the importance of safety. The tone of the cover
letter should not be too demanding without losing individuality. My resume should link my
professional knowledge to the requirement of the job. Computer and software skills should also
be included and be put above other titles in the resume since they are part of the basic
requirements.
For my cover letter, I researched online and found the companys annual safety training
and included it in the first paragraph. I showed that I would like to work in a company that takes
care of employees and values safety and teamwork. I included my two examples of software
skills and communications skill. I also included my profession knowledge in the examples to
show that I am qualified. In my resume, I placed professional experiences in the upper half
because they are obviously more important to the employers. As mentioned in Philip Colins
How to Get a Job, a resume is a factual and concise summary of my qualifications, convincing
a prospective employer that I have the education and experience to do the job, which is what I
am trying to accomplish by modifying my resume.

Dear Mr. XYZ,

I am very excited to find this open position as a manufacturing engineer. I have recently read the news of
the companys 37th annual Hands On Training event. It is such encouraging news that a company would
provide its employees with essential trainings annually to help improve with their abilities to tackle
different tasks efficiently and safely. My understanding of the companys background and mission would
help me contribute my passion and knowledge to your manufacturing team right away.
During my sophomore year as an undergraduate in mechanical engineering, I made a perfect score on the
first Statics exam and got our professors attention. The following week after the exam, my professor
contacted me through email and presented me his research program. My first assignment as his research
assistant was to make to molds with Solidworks for manufacturing purpose. At the time I had little
knowledge with Solidworks. However, I spent most of my free time researching and practicing. By the
end of the second week, I completed the task and the professor was very satisfied with the results.
I developed my communicating skills as a physics tutor in the Oklahoma Teaching Alliance, a student
organization aiming at providing students access to peer-oriented learning experience. I was able to
clearly break down a complicated problem into small and easy to understand parts and help my mentees
develop a system that applies to similar type of problems to reduce the time required to complete it.
I think that The Terex team and I can have an exciting work experience together and promote not only
efficiency but safety as well. I look forward to discussing more about this opportunity. Please contact me
at (918)-398-3347 on Mondays and Wednesdays or email me at bohan.yu@ou.edu. Thank you for your
consideration.

Sincerely,
Bohan Yu

The second job is looking for an intern for OGE Energy Corp. The company value
individual safety and well-being, transparency, teamwork, respect, integrity, and public service.
One of the most important requirements of this job is data collection and analysis. Thus, ability
to gather data with different tool and organizing documents is very essential. The job also
requires verbal and written communication skills as well as interpersonal skills. Teamwork is
preferred in the job, and professional knowledge of solving problems is required. The job ad
mentioned the ability to utilize engineering computing tools but does not put a heavy weight on
it. The job requires strong skills on data collection as well as data analysis. Therefore in my
cover letter, I should include the example of my experience of dealing with data, preferably with
both collection and analysis. Professional knowledge is not as important. Another factor of
meeting the preferred skill set is communication. I should include the example of my ability to
communicate with other people, both verbally and written. Flexibility should also be mentioned
in my resume since the job ad notes that the applicant may need to work non-standard hours and
be exposed to certain extreme conditions.
In Paul Andersons Obtaining a Job, the purpose of a cover letter is to project a
favorable image of the applicant. To accomplish this, I included my experience with the Sooner
Off-Road racing team when I had the duties of collecting and analyzing data and work with a
team in the meantime. I also mentioned that I wrote a report just to touch on the written
communication skill, which will show that I meet the qualifications and create a favorable image.
For this job application, I also rearranged my activities so that the related experience will be
more important. I added relevant writing course to support my writing skill and multicultural
engineering program to demonstrate my contribution of embracing diversity.

Dear Mr. ABC,

I am writing to apply for the internship which I saw posted on your companys website. I am a
junior mechanical engineering student at the University of Oklahoma. I am excited to this
opportunity open in OGE Energy Corp. The goal of your team to improve renewable energy and
generate energy more efficiently also energizes my passion to join a team that embraces
innovation and diversity. I believe that my engineering knowledge and skills will contribute to
your teams work.

During my first year on the Sooner Off-Road team, I went to field test drive of our vehicle with
other team members. Besides test driving, my duties also included collecting data for other test
drivers and make analysis to evaluate our vehicles straight line acceleration performance. We
had multiple members for test driving, and at the end of the day I gathered data from all other
team members. I used Microsoft Excel for data evaluation and wrote a report for our team.

I think that my skills will be of great use for the OGE team in the process of developing
renewable energy for our society, and I look forward to speak with you regarding my application
for the internship. You can email me at bohan.yu@ou.edu or reach me at (918)-398-3347 on
weekdays. Thank you for your consideration.
