ABOUT US
PHIONE Limited is a British Company, headquartered in London, United Kingdom. We are steel experts with
more than 25 years of experience in dealing with ferrous and non-ferrous metals. We employ decades of expertise on sampling, testing and inspecting in order to guarantee that the pipes we deliver are manufactured,
marked, labelled, packed and shipped to meet the highest of expectations.
Over the past decade, we have developed strong ties with a range of First Class Steel Mills in Europe and Asia,
which give us the flexibility to offer the most suitable product for each project: high end premium materials
from European sources as well as materials from fully quality controlled Asian sources, for the budget conscious.
PHIONE operates as a specialised division of the HOLDTRADE Group, an International entity with a successful
track record for providing specialist services for the railway and mining industries across Europe and Africa,
dating back to the 1970s.

QUALITY CONTROL IS OUR PRIORITY

Regardless of the origin, i.e. whether our pipes are manufactured in Europe or Asia, we have the strictest
Quality Control procedures in place. As a consequence we are therefore able to offer a two year warranty
against any manufacturing defects not detected directly after manufacturing and/or inspection by the end
user, on any of the pipes we supply.
We monitor the entire project cycle extremely closely. From the sourcing and acceptance of the raw material
and the manufacturing of the pipes, to the in-house testing, inspection and shipping. Our continuous project
management processes enable us to avoid costly delays as well as guarantee 100% compliance to the norms
and specifications required.
On Welded Pipes we take all necessary measures to guarantee High-quality welds: we only use qualified
welders who in turn use approved welding procedures, materials and equipment. Furthermore we use the
most rigorous inspection methods to ensure the appropriate testing of the quality of the welds: we employ
qualified technicians who only use approved testing methods and equipment.

INSPECTION
Our manufacturing partners are certified for the production of seamless and welded steel pipes and our
in-house inspection services ensure that the appropriate procedures are carried out in accordance with the
respective specification and standard. In addition we can adhere to individual end user requirements. Processes include but are not limited to:

Non-destructive methodologies:
- Ultrasonic testing
- X-Ray testing
- Magnetic particle testing
- Liquid penetrant testing
- Hydrostatic testing
- Eddy current testing

Provision of raw material test certificates tracing back to the procurement of base material
Documentation of Welding procedures and Welder qualifications
Dimensional Control procedures and sampling methodologies

MANUFACTURING PROCESS
All raw material used in the manufacturing of our pipes is made using clean steel practices and is either
produced employing the basic oxygen steel-making process or the electric furnace process. We guarantee
that all steel is killed and treated according to fine grain practice, where vacuum degassing or alternative
processes to reduce the gas content of the steel are applied and where molten steel is treated for inclusions
and shape control.
We can accommodate other requirements for specific applications, such as; pipes with a qualified manufacturing procedure, pipes ordered with resistance to ductile fracture propagation in gas pipelines or pipes for
sour service.

Seamless - Cold Drawn (CW)

Our cold drawn (cold finished) pipes go through a series of steps as well as thorough testing in one of our
state-of-the-art facilities. The Raw material (round billets) is manufactured under order in first class steel
mills. Each billet is heated in a rotary heat furnace. The billet enters a rotary piercing mill where a hydraulic
ram feeds the billet between heavy rollers that drive it over a piercing point, producing a tube hollow. While
still hot, the tubes or pipes are reduced in size in a stretch reducing mill, resulting in shells (thick pipes).
After cooling, the shell is cold worked on a draw bench, which pulls it through the stationary die and over a
mandrel. This process improves grain structure and surface condition; increases hardness; and reduces the
product to the desired size and thickness within extremely close tolerances.
When cold working is complete, each piece moves to the annealing furnace, where variations of temperature, time and number of cycles produce a wide range of hardness and tensile strength to meet the industry
standards as well as customer specifications and requirements. Once straightened to desired tolerances, the
product is cut to length.
Samples are cut according to applicable standard and client requirements, which are then moved to our
metallurgical laboratory for testing. A certified material test report is generated for each order and the final
products are packaged in bare bundles with metal straps for shipping.

Submerged-Arc Longitudinal Welding (SAWL)

The Raw material for our pipes is steel plate strips which are formed under the UO process. As the name
suggests, the plate is first shaped into a U, followed by an O pressing. Forming in the U is achieved by
the lowering of a die. The crimped plate is moved towards the die by side rollers. The U-shaped plate is then
formed into a slit pipe in the O-ing press.
The abutting faces are welded from the inside and the outside by submerged arc welding. All our pipes are
Arc welded with equipment that performs the entire welding operation without manual manipulation of the
arc or electrode other than guiding or tracking.

Submerged-Arc Helical Welding Process

(SAWH)
This process entails splice-welding of steel strips and submerged arc welding of the spiral seam on both sides
after forming. Pipe ends are trimmed and cut to the specic lengths.
Then the pipes are ultrasonically inspected for laminar imperfections. All pipes undergo hydrostatic tests to
ensure that they are leak-proof and that they meet pressure resistance specications. The weld is inspected
by ultrasound, uoroscope and x-ray. Product quality is further scrutinised via destructive tests.

HOW OUR PIPES ARE BEING USED

With their high resistance to corrosion, abrasion and impact our pipes are ideally suited for use in a wide
variety of different conditions.

Mining and Industrial Applications

Our pipes are used in mineral transportation, for treated and untreated water, for water supply and waste
water systems as well as in milling and grinding processes.

Oil and Gas

Our pipes are widely used in the Oil and Gas Industries in exploration, production, transportation and refinery
for both, onshore and offshore applications at high and low temperatures.
The consequences of sudden failures of metallic components used for the oil and gas production associated
with their exposure to H2S - containing production fluids, led to the development of NACE MR0175 / ISO
15156-1 and subsequently EFC Publication 16. ISO 15156-2. We use these sources to provide recommendations for materials, as well as criteria for qualification and selection for applications in environments containing wet H2S in oil and gas production systems.
Carbon and low alloy steels selected using ISO 15156-2 are for example resistant to cracking in defined H2S
- containing environments in oil and gas production, but are not necessarily immune to cracking under other
service conditions.
In any case, our team of experts will be more than happy to find the best suited product for your specific
requirement.

Structural Applications
PHIONEs Pipe piles are commonly used in deep foundations to transfer the loads from buildings to stronger
soil layers found deep underground. The loads are resisted through skin friction and point bearing. PHIONE
can provide ERW, DSAW, and Spiral Welded Pipes in a wide range of sizes and lengths complying to a variety
of different standards (see page 12).

Piling
PHIONE supplies piling pipes where the steel cylinder can act as a permanent load-carrying member, or as
a shell to form cast-in-place concrete piles. Our pipes can be made available in different variations: Closeended piles, or pipes equipped with a rock shoe or bottom plate.

In conjunction with supplying Piling Pipes PHIONE can also supply

Sheet Piles which can work together in Combined Walls, which
are ideal when a high horizontal and vertical bearing capacity are
required separately or simultaneously.
PHIONE combined wall systems are not only extremely efficient
bearing vertical load but are also very efficient at retaining elements for horizontal load from soil and/or water pressure.
We can supply our Pile Piles to the length required on site, and
if desired with the connectors pre welded, to minimize cost and
save time at the point of driving the piles on site.

Seamless, Welded, and Heavily Cold Worked Austenitic Stainless Steel Pipes to ASTM A 312/A 312M Standard
Austenitic Stainless Steel Pipes under A 312 specification are supplied seamless, straight-seam welded, and heavily cold worked welded.A 312 pipes might be ordered in
several grades and sub grades, such us: TPXM, TP304, TP309, TP310, TP316, TP317, TP321, TP347 and TP348.
Use: A-312 Pipes are intended for high-temperature and general corrosive service.

PIPE COATING
We can apply different coatings under different International Standards to suit various applications. From Fusion Bond Epoxy (FBE) coating applied externally to bare steel pipes in either single, double or triple layers,
to more complex coating systems like polyethylene coatings applied to bare or Epoxy-primed pipes.

We are able to provide the right solution for different requirements, for instance: abrasion, damage resistance, increased shear resistance between concrete coating and the coated steel pipe, increased corrosion
protection or coating for pipes which are for buried or submerged service in oil or gas pipeline systems.

PACKAGING & TRANSPORT

At PHIONE we recognise that loading and transporting the Pipes it as important as manufacturing them in
compliance with the manufacturing code. Whether transported by truck, barge and/or marine vessels, we
do our utmost to ensure that pipes arrive at the destination in perfect condition, avoiding Pipe-end damages,
abrasion or peening and/or longitudinal fatigue cracks. We follow the recommendations of different codes
(API 5L1 and API 5LW) and in addition implement our own internal policies and procedures which are the
result of years of experience.
After manufacturing our pipes are stacked, always considering the maximum weight that the bottom layer
of pipe can withstand before deformation will occur. During marine shipments, either in containers or in the
hold of the vessel, we consider the best alternative between cantile stowage (nesting or pyramid fashion)
with wood blocking every other tier on both sides of the pile, or in special cases by means of separator strips.
Where welded pipes are concerned, we prevent welds from being in contact with the adjacent wood blocking, positioning the weld seam in appropriate way to avoid any damage.

SAFETY
Safety is of utmost importance for both our staff and our clients. Safety in all aspects of our operation is
therefore a priority and something we constantly seek to improve upon. In addition to PHIONE staff taking
safety courses regularly, we are keen to offer advice on the safe use and handling of our products to all clients
and give guidance wherever possible.
