#FarahAnn: Athletes Outfits To

Be Reviewed Following
Gymnasts Leotard Controversy
A couple of days ago, Malaysian gymnast Farah Ann Abdul Hadis made Malaysia proud when
she snagged a gold medal at the 28th Southeast Asian Games (SEA Games) in Singapore.
Having impressed the judges with her style and movements, Farah emerged as the judges
favourite and won a bronze medal in the balance beam event.
She presented a great display during the floor exercise routine and collected 13.733 points to
grab the ultimate win.

Alas, what shouldve been a widely celebrated occasion instead drew flak from certain Malaysian
netizens, particularly a percentage of the Muslim community, due to the 21-year-old Muslim
gymnasts leotard.
Her picture, first shared by Buletin TV3 via their Facebook page, became the subject of attention
as several Facebook users criticised her for not covering up her aurat and showing off the
shape of her vagina in leotard.
Note: Islam requires both Muslim men and women to wear clothes that will not reveal the
curves and shape of her body, in protection of their honour and integrity. However, criticisms are
often targeted against women.
Other Facebook users as well as Malaysian leaders rushed in to defend Farah Ann, asking
people to acknowledge Farahs talent instead of getting heated over her gymnastic attire. This
includes Parti Gerakan Rakyat Malaysia Youth Chief Tan Keng Liang, Malaysian Gymnastics
Federation secretary N. Shanmugarajah, Malaysias Minister of Youth & Sports Khairy

Jamaluddin, as well as Tun Dr Mahathirs daughter and social activist Datin Paduka Marina
Mahathir.
Marina Mahathir said the attacks against Farah Ann were a sign of how the country was in
danger of being overtaken by stupidity. At the Cooler Lumpur Festival panel discussion, she
commented:

No, I dont think well be a Taliban state yet; well be a stupid state first. The trouble
is, our top leadership, we do have small and petty-minded people. They see these
leaders saying things bocor lah, ni lah, crosses on telekungs for instance
nobody laughs at them. In another country, people would point at the politicians and
say, What a dumb thing to say. But here they dont.
And thats not all
Meanwhile, in a report by The Star Online, Perak mufti Tan Sri Dr Harussani Zakaria said that
gymnastics was not meant for Muslim women as they would be showing their aurat and body
shape, which was clearly against Islamic teachings.
If they still want to take part, gymnasts must wear clothes that cover their aurat, which may not
be suitable for the sport,he said.
He added that this applied to other sports such as football, where male players should wear
shorts that extended past their knees.
As such, according to TMI, Minister in the Prime Ministers Department Datuk Seri Jamil Khir
Baharom said that the government will review sports attire for athletes following complaints
about Farah Anns leotard. Jamil Khir told Dewan Rakyat last night that issues that could shame
and taint Islam must be given serious attention.
We take attention of this matter so that this becomes a lesson, in whichever field, including
sports, for us to look into the clothing and attire, he said while wrapping up the debate for the
religious affairs department for the 11th Malaysia Plan.
He was responding to a question from Siti Zailah Mohd Yusoff (PAS-Rantau Panjang) who asked
if the Department of Islamic Development Malaysia (Jakim) have issued regulations on clothing
for athletes that the Youth and Sports Ministry can implement.
What do you guys think though? Do you think there should be regulations on clothing for
athletes? How else would Farah Ann have dressed while competing for the gymnastics title, so
as to not hinder her performance? And what about our national swimmers?
UPDATE (17th June, 3pm):
Khairy Jamaluddin has stepped forward to say that athletes dont have to abide by any dress
code drawn up by the Malaysian Islamic Development Department (JAKIM), and that JAKIMs
guidelines was just a guideline and theres no compulsion to it.

In a report from The Star Online, Khairy was quoted as saying:

Its up to the athletes to follow the guidelines and theres no compulsion to cover
up I hope this settles it. We have to remember some sports attires are regulated
by the sports federations besides, the athletes only wear the attire during
competitions, they dont wear it every day.
He also slammed the critics as hypocrites and said the issue smacked of sexism.
Farah is an adult and has been brought up well. She knows what shes doing and old enough to
decide for herself. Male athletes dont get this kind of attention, body-builders wear much more
revealing trunks. The critics can look elsewhere or, if they cannot contain themselves, we will
have to ban them from entering stadiums, Khairy said.

After furore over Muslim

gymnasts attire, minister says
serious attention to dress

gymnast. Picture by Yusuf Mat Isa

KUALA LUMPUR, June 15 A minister today said that the federal government will carry out an
in-depth study on Islamic compliance for clothing used for sports and other fields, following
criticism over the outfit used by a champion gymnast at the ongoing SEA Games in Singapore.
Datuk Seri Jamil Khir Baharom, in charge of Islamic affairs, said there is no denying that it is the
responsibility of Muslims regardless of gender to cover their aurat, which roughly translates to
parts of the body that should not be publicly exposed.
We take note of this so it becomes a guide, in whatever field including sports for us to take a
more in-depth look at clothing on issues that can taint Islam, including Muslim women, he said in
response to a question when winding up points raised during the 11th Malaysia Plan debate.

PAS Rantau Panjang MP Siti Zailah Mohd Yusoff had asked earlier if Putrajaya has looked into
enforcing Shariah compliance in all issues that involve Muslims, zooming in on the recent
controversy over gymnast Farah Ann Abdul Hadis attire during her gold medal performance.
She stressed that the clothing used by female Muslim athletes that expose their aurat clearly
went against sharak or Islamic principles and is very shameful.
Several Facebook users had last week slammed the 21-year-old Farah Ann on Buletin TV3s
Facebook page after it uploaded a photograph of her in the gymnastics outfit, along with a
caption that announced her winning gold in floor exercise in artistic gymnastics.
The Malay athlete has since received an outpouring of support, however, from Malaysians who
pointed out that the athlete should be celebrated for her performance at the games, which not
only saw her take home gold, but three bronze medals and a silver in other individual events.
Even former minister Tan Sri Rafidah Aziz weighed in on the issue, slamming Farah Anns critics
for being obsessed with athletes body shapes and dressing instead of their performances.
They have a choice. They dont have to watch the sport and see what, in their personal opinion,
is indecent or inappropriate dressing! Rafidah said in her column in Malay daily Utusan
Malaysia.

Outrage Over Farah Ann

Abdul Hadis Leotard: Women
Must Prioritize The Islamic
Codes In Sports Attire
Malaysian gymnast Farah Ann Abdul Hadi took home gold medals from the 2015 Southeast
Asian Games in the womens floor exercise and womens team events, but it seems the Muslim
community can only focus on her leotard. Criticized for exposing her aurat, or her genital area,
her criticizers feel she should cover up better, slamming Farah on social media for wearing a
traditional gymnasts leotard.
In addition to her two gold medals, Farah Ann Abdul Hadi also brought home silver in the female
individual events, plus three bronze medals quite an achievement for any athlete. As required
by the regulations of gymnasts, Farah Ann wore a traditional leotard during her medal-winning
performances that exposed the parts of her body necessary for judges to assess her
performance correctly.
But despite her stellar performance, senior officials in Malaysia think Abdul Hadi should quit
sports altogether. Gymnastics is not for Muslim women. It is clear that exposing ones aurat and
the shape of ones body is haram [forbidden in Islam], stated Senior Islamic cleric Perak Mufti
Tan Sri Harussani Zakaria, according to the Examiner.
If Muslim women want to participate in gymnastics, they have to find outfits which cover the
aurat and this, in turn, might not be suitable for the sport, the Islamic cleric continued, implying
that Farah Ann should compete in clothing other than her leotard.
As previously reported by the Inquisitr, Farah Ann Abdul Hadi fired back at her detractors, posting
on Facebook, Empty cans make the most noise.
According to News.com.au, Federal MP Jamil Khir Baharom announced hell assign a task force
to review Islamic compliance for clothing used for sports and other fields following complaints
on social media. Facebook users slammed Farah Ann Abdul Hadi for allowing her aurat to be
seen through her purple leotard.
The politician, who runs the Malasian Islamic Affairs office, told parliament that it was the
responsibility of all Muslims, Abdul Hadi included, to cover their aurat, reports News.com.au. He
indicated this rule shouldnt just apply to females like Farah, but to all Muslims, regardless of
gender.
Men werent the only one questioning whether Farah Ann Abdul Hadi should wear a leotard.
Head of the female wing of the National Muslim Youth Association in Malaysia, Roszida
Kamaruddin, told the media that women should not be stopped from sports, but they must
prioritize the Islamic codes in sports attire.
