ANCIENT 'PINDORAMA'. TODAY'S

BRAZIL -THE
RAMAYANA
CONNECT AND A
BIT ABOUT
BRAZILIAN
INSCRIPTIONS &
THEIR LINK TO
'INDUS VALLEY
SCRIPT'
The native name for Brazil
is PindoRama and though it
is said that Pindo Rama
translates as 'Land of
Palms' from Tupi, an
ancient American-Indian
language, there is much
evidence that indicates
that Sri Rama, the GodKing of Ayodhya was
worshipped in that part of
the world.
In the Vedic tradition
'pinda' () is a very
meaningful word. It often
appears in mantras and
sutras. For example the
Upanashid says 'yatha pindi
tatha bramhanda'. 'As is the
body so is the universe', or
the body is a smaller
version of the entire

universe.
In Sanskrit, 'pinda' is the
'body', it is the body as the
reflection of the 'world'. It
is the body as the mirror of
the whole universe.The
significance of the term
Pinda according to
Upanasids is 'an organised
whole, a unity of
diversities'. Pindarama is
'Rama's Universe' or
'Rama as someone who is
the universe'.
In the Krittivasi Ramayana,
Ahiravan (Ahiravan or
Mahiravan), brother of
Ravana, was a rakshasa
who secretly carried away
Rama and his brother
Lakshmana to the netherworld, consulted his
friends and decided to
sacrifice the life of the two
divine brothers at the altar
of his chosen deity,
goddess Mahamaya. But
Hanuman saved their life
by killing Ahiravan and his
army.The nether-world or
'patala' is often identified
as the South American landmass.
In the Valmiki Ramayana,
after the abduction of Sita,
Sugreeva - the 'vanara'
commander, orders his
chiefs to 'go round the
earth and fetch all the
monkey champions on
earth'. The chiefs go to
various mountains, rivers,
oceans, and forests and
motivate all monkeys to
reach Sugreeva at once'.
Valmiki Ramayana,
Kishkinda Kand, Chapter
37).
Once the 'vanaras'
assimilate, Sugreeva gives

detailed instructions about

the route that each of the
search parties is to take in
search of the abducted
Sita. The route-map is so
detailed, and mentions
mountains and rivers, seas
and oceans and the travel
time involved, that it is
absurd to deduct that
Sugreeva was only
detailing regions within
India or had no knowledge
of the world beyond. Refer
to Chapters 37, 40, 41, 42
and 43 of the Kishkinda
Kand. That the reach Peru
is substantiated by the
mention of the ancient
Paracas Trident of Peru in
the Ramayana. For more on
this click here.
Archaeology and ancient
reliefs indicate that
Ramayana, Sri Rama,
Hanuman, Goddess Sita
etc. were not unknown in
Brazil, Honduras, Peru,
Bolivia, Guatemala and
Mexico.
There is archaeological
support to the fact that
Hanuman was not unknown
in that part of the world.

The ancient name of Brazil,

that is Pindorama, is also
related to an ancient tribe
of Brazil by the name
'RamaRama'. The
RamaRama were a Tupi
speaking group of
considerable size living in
the Brazilian Amazonian
area in a place called
Rondonia. When the
Spanish rubber-collector's
poured into Rondonia in
1880s they brought death
and disease to the tribe so
that it is now extinct as a
culture.
Ancient civilizations such
as the Maori's of New
Zealand also had a tribe by
the name RamaRama.
There is a place by the
name RamaRama in New
Zealand which is 40 km
away from the city of
Auckland.
Researching the path of
ancient sea-farers from
India, Frank Joseph states
in his book 'Archaeological
Discoveries of Ancient
America', "A general
population spread, from
India into Pacific and
beyond the shores of South
America, may begin with
native Maori oral history in
New Zealand. Folk
tradition recounts that 161
generations ago
(approximately 1500 BC),
Maori ancestors migrated
en-masse from a hot
country called Iriha in the
wake of war.... The Maoris'
ancient 'Iriha' is an obvious
variation of Vrihia, an
ancient name for India...".
Joseph adds, "...
archaeological digs

throughout the Pacific

suggest the Vedic mariners
colonized areas as far
eastward as Samoa and
Tonga including Fiji.. and
further on...".
Joseph also states that the
names Kuru and Pandava
finds its way into Peruvian
ancient books as Urus and
Puruha and is remembered
by Peru's Ayamara tribes.
The mixed descendants of
some Urus still live on
floating reed beds at Lake
Titicaca in Bolivia.
Recently archaeologists
have discovered huge
amounts of gold artifacts in
the lake Titicaca region
which are at the least 4000
years old, indicating that
civilization was not
unknown in this part of the
world in antiquity.
Not far from Lake Titicaca
the Incan's celebrated the
Inti Rayami festival (also
called Rama-Sitva) which
researchers have linked
with the celebration of the
winter Solstice. Sir William
Jones (1744 - 1794) stated
in his papers published by
the the Asiatic Society that
the Incan festival 'RamaSitva' celebrated on the
Winter Solstice Day gets
its name from the Hindu
God King, Sri Rama and his
wife, Goddess Sita. The
Winter Solstice Day is
celebrated in June in Peru.
(Peru lies in the southern
Hemisphere and the winter
solstice day falls in June).
But now, back to Brazil. In
his book, Mysteries of
Ancient South America,
author Harold T. Wilkins
writes about the findings of

an expedition in the 1920s

lead by Colonel P.H.
Fawcett into the woods of
the Brazilian Amazon
where he chanced upon an
ancient city and some rock
inscriptions, about which
Wilkins says, "... those
strange writings are
something more
remarkable... they are of an
esoteric Hindu cult." (page
63).
Writing about the
inscriptions, he further
adds," I have myself
discovered some queer
links between these
strange letters of old
Brazil, and characters
found in Tibet and Vedic
Hindostan". (Page 118).
For example the
inscriptions on the Inga
stone of Brazil have been
compared to RongoRongo
(the ancient script of
Easter island located in the
South Pacific ocean) which
itself bears a close
resemblance to the Indus
Valley script.

Another view of ancient Brazilian inscriptions

In 1932, Wilhelm de Hevesy

was the first academic to
suggest a link between
Rongorongo and the Indus
script of the Indus Valley
Civilization in India,
claiming that as many as
forty Rongorongo symbols
had a correlating symbol in
the Indus valley script from
India.

similar to Indus valley Script.

ANCIENT
SUMERIAN
TEMPLES & CITIES
- THE 'INDRA' AND
SANSKRIT
CONNECTION
The most ancient city
according to Sumerian
inscriptions is Eridu. It is
the city from which the
Sumerian civilization is
said to have
emerged. Worship was
central to the Sumerian
civilization. Amazingly, in
Sanskrit the word
'Iradh' () of which Eridu
might be a distortion,
means 'worship'.

http://vediccafe.blogspot.com.br/ (9 de 68)18/09/2014 17:11:11

Vedic Cafe

The ruins of Eridu, the ancient Sumerian temple city.

Iridh ( ) is Sanskrit for 'worship'.

The Zagros Mountains

make the back-drop for the
ancient cities of Sumerian
civilization.

The 'Zagros' mountains were named after a

seafaring race,
the Sagar-tians. 'Sagara' is Sanskrit for
'sea'.

The Zagros Mountains in

Iran-Iraq were named after
an ancient nomadic tribe,
referred to by the name
'Sagar-tians'. Stephanus
Byzantinus (6th century
http://vediccafe.blogspot.com.br/ (10 de 68)18/09/2014 17:11:11

AD), who was the author of

a geographical dictionary
entitled 'Ethnica', wrote
that there was a peninsula
in the Caspian Sea called
'Sagartia' and that the
Sagartians moved south
from Sagrtia to what were
later known as Zagros
mountains. In Sanskrit
'sagara' () means 'sea'
and its other form
'sagartia' means 'of the
sea'. The Zagros mountains
were named after the
Sagar-tian tribe who were
also referred to as Zagarthians. The Zagros formed
the backdrop to the
ancient cities of Sumerian
and Babylonian civilization.
For more on the ancient
cities of central Asia and
the Sanskrit connection to
their names, click here.
Samuel Noah Kramer
writes in his book 'The
Sumerians: Their History,
Culture, and Character', "...
it was rite and ritual...
which played a prominent
role in their (Sumerian)
religion. Since man was
created for no other
purpose than to serve the
gods, it was obviously his
major duty to perform and
perfect this service in a
manner pleasing and
satisfactory to his
masters...".
Central then to the city of
Eridu was its many temples
which were simple in
structure but as time went
on the buildings became
more complex - however
what remained constant
was a niche for an idol and
an altar for offerings.
One of the ancient sacred

temples of Sumer was

known as 'gipar-ku'. That
name seems to be a
distortion of the Sanskrit
'gopura' () meaning
'temple gate'.
Samuel Kramer states.
"The building and rebuilding of a temple was
accompanied by numerous
rites and rituals, as is
evidenced by that long and
remarkable hymnal
narrative poem inscribed
on the two Gudea cylinders
excavated in Lagash... . the
temple head was known as
the sanga, and his duties
were no doubt to keep the
temple building and
finances in good order....
the spiritual head of the
temple was the en who
lived in a part of the temple
known as gipar. Under the
en were a number of
priestly classes
including .. mah, ishib,
nindigir...." .
Here is a look at these
Sumerian terms through
the Sanskrit lens: 'En '()
is 'glorious', 'master',
'ruler', 'sun' etc, 'mah' ()
is strong or powerful.
'Ishib' may be a distortion
of 'Ishva', the 'v' often
changing to 'b' as in
'Bishnu' derived from
'Vishnu' - 'Ishva' ()
meaning 'vedic teacher'.
'Nindigir' may be a
distorted version of
'nandikar' ()
meaning 'speaker' or 'one
who addresses' or 'speaker
of prologue'.
An analysis of the
inscriptions of the Gudea
cylinders by Sanskrit

Vedic hymns, can reveal

any links to the Rig, Sama
and Yajur Vedic verses of
ancient India.

Sumerian legends
repeatedly mention a
paradise-land by the name
'Dilmun', which Samuel
Kramer states is "...
perhaps to be identified
with ancient India...". In
Sanskrit a close cognate of
Dilmun is 'Dalmi' ()
which is another name for
lord 'Indra'.
In the Sumerian legend
'Dilmun' is a land that is
'pure', 'bright' and 'clean',
though it lacks water until
the Sumerian water-god
Enki orders 'Utu' the sungod to fill it with fresh
water. Enki too therefore
seems to be the Sumerian
avatar of Indra, the Vedic
god of rain.
Sumer itself is often

THE POLYNESIAN
TRIANGLE (HAWAII
- NEW ZEALAND EASTER ISLAND) THE SANSKRIT &
INDUS VALLEY
CIVILIZATION
CONNECT
The Polynesian Triangle is
a region of the Pacific
Ocean with three island
groups at its corners:
Hawaii (one of the states
of the United States),
Easter Island (Rapa Nui)
and New Zealand. It is
often used as a simple way
to define Polynesia.

http://vediccafe.blogspot.com.br/ (14 de 68)18/09/2014 17:11:11

Vedic Cafe

The many island cultures

within this vast triangle
speak Polynesian
languages, which
mainstream scholars say
ultimately derive from the
Proto-Austronesian
language spoken in
Southeast Asia 5,000 years
ago. That the mother
language of all languages
in ancient South East Asia
was Sanskrit is well
known.
The Maoris of New Zealand
speak of their original
homeland as Hawaiki,
as Iriha, as Atia, as
Tawhiti, as Uru, and as
Mataora.
The Hawaiki was regarded
as a 'tapu' place, i.e,
'sacred', 'spiritual' and
'unknown', the word 'tapu'
probably related to the
Sanskrit 'tap' (), i.e.,
'penance' or 'asceticism'.
http://vediccafe.blogspot.com.br/ (15 de 68)18/09/2014 17:11:11

Vedic Cafe

As they travelled from their

original mother- land the
Polynesians named many
of their newer homes also
as Hawaiki. For example,
what later came to be
known as New Zealand
was also given the name
Hawaiki-Tahutahu by some
branches of the Polynesian
race.
The people of Rarotongan,
the most populous island
within the Cook Islands
group and a part of New
Zealand today, referred to
their original homeland as
'Atia-te-varinga-nui. We
track here the origins of
the names 'Atia-te-varinganui' and 'Iriha'.
In his research work 'The
Origin of the Maori- the
Hidden Homeland of the
Maori and its Probable
Location' in the Journal of
the Polynesian Society,
Volume 32, 1923,
researcher Elsdon Best
traces the name 'Iriha' to
India.
He states, "We now come
to the name of Irihia, and
here encounter two
interesting facts. In the
first place we know that an
old Sanskrit name for India
was Vrihia, and no Maori
could pronounce this name
otherwise than as Irihia or
Wirihia ....vrihi () is a
Sanskrit name for rice,
hence 'vrihia' bears a
meaning equivalent to the
name Atia-te-varinga-nu".
The Rarotongan name 'Atiate-varinga-nu' is translated
by them in their local
language as the 'be-riced'
place - 'atia' meaning
http://vediccafe.blogspot.com.br/ (16 de 68)18/09/2014 17:11:11

Vedic Cafe

'plentiful' and 'vari'

meaning 'rice'. Refer then
to the Sanskrit 'ati' ()
meaning 'plentiful'
'vrihi' () meaning 'rice'
- varinga being a distortion
of 'vrihi'.
Another name of the
original homeland that the
Polynesians mentioned
was 'Uru' (), another
Sanskrit word meaning
'great', vast, or 'spacious'.
Dr. E. S. Cragihill Handy
describes the story of
Polynesian culture as "a
mere index to Indian
history." And now for some
archaeological collateral.
The hypothesis of Indian
contact with the
Polynesians is
strengthened by the
discovery of the Easter
Island scripts which
closely resemble the
scripts of the Indus Valley
civilization.

SANSKRIT -THE
COMMON KEY TO
INDUS VALLEY AND
ANCIENT
POLYNESIAN
INSCRIPTIONS & A
BIT ABOUT MAORI
Scholars through the last
two centuries have arrived
at the conclusion that the
Polynesian language group of
the Pacific islands is
derived from ancient Vedic
Sanskrit from India.
Polynesia is a subregion of
Oceania, made up of over
1,000 islands scattered
over the central and
southern Pacific Ocean off
the east coast of Australia..

Polynesia is group of 1000 islands off the coast of

Australia

One of the languages

within the Polynesian
Group is the Maori. In her
paper, 'The Relationship
between Maori and
Sanskrit', researcher Adele
Schafer states, "In the
nineteenth century a good

few writers explored the

relationships which exist
between the languages and
cultures of India and SouthEast Asia and those of
Polynesia. Many of these
writers argued that the
original home of the
Polynesian people was
India, and many of them
considered that there was
a clear relationship
between the Polynesian
language and Sanskrit, one
of the ancient languages of
India."
Adele Schafer states
further, "...the most
important contribution to
this subject was made by
Edward Tregear, who in
1891 published his MaoriPolynesian Comparative
Dictionary. This Maori
dictionary quotes parallel
words to be found in other
Polynesian languages, and
sometimes also quotes
parallel words to be found
in Asian languages such as
Malayan and Sanskrit.
Tregear believed that the
Maori language was mainly
derived from Sanskrit.... He
discusses this theory in his
book The Aryan Maori,
published in 1885, and in
an article in the
Transactions of the New
Zealand Institute, vol. 20,
p. 400 ff".
And here is a table from
the works of Treager which
shows the relationship
between Sanskrit and
Maori:

Maori is still spoken by the

of the Polynesian Island.
But a more ancient
language of the Polynesian

discovered in the 19th

Rongo Rongo was also
inscribed on banana leaves
but obviously no examples
have survived.

The Rongo Rongo inscriptions of the ancient

But now the interesting

part. Almost half of the
symbols of the Rongo
Rongo script, which
consists of about 120
symbols, mainly
representations of birds,
fish, gods, plants and a
variety of geometric
shapes, are virtually
identical to symbols of the
Indus Valley script of India.

The characters of the ancient Rongo Rongo language

of Easter islands bear a close resemblance
to the Indus valley script.

Says James Nienhuis, an

earth creationist, is of the
view that mainstream
scientists and New Agers
are missing the boat by
willfully misinterpreting the
evidences about our
ancient history. His answer

fathom how two ancient
cultures geographically

common - "It is clear that

transoceanic navigation in
ancient times brought that
language 13,000 miles
across the Pacific from
India, as the facts bear
out". Early Sanskrit texts, i.
e the Vedas, Jatakas,
Panini's Astadhyayi, the
epics, Arthashastra etc.
make innumerable
references to sea-voyages,
sea-borne trade, shipbuilding techniques and so
on.
It is said that the key to
deciphering the Rongo
Rongo is the Indus Valley
script.Though most believe
that the Indus Valley script
itself is undeciphered, it is
also known that researcher
Kurt Schildmann had done
extensive work and shown
that the Indus valley script
can be understood with the
aid of Sanskrit. Refer to

It is said that 'Wakulla' is a
Timucuan (Native
American) word, and it is
unlikely that its meaning
will ever be known.
Wikipedia says, 'Wakulla'
may contain the word 'kala'
which signified a 'spring of
water' in some Native
American Indian dialects'.
This is where the Sanskrit
connection is evident.

'Wakulla' Springs, Tallahasee, Florida

Lets look at the word

through the Sanskrit lens.
In Sanskrit 'v' () means
water. 'Kulya' ()
means a 'stream', a 'canal'
or a 'water body'. Kulini
() means a 'river'.
Talahasee has a similar
meaning. In Sanskrit,
'tala' () again means a
water body or pond and
'talak' means 'spring'.
'Ulhas' () means
joyful, cause movement,
jump, shine forth or come

'VEDIC' GLYPH
FROM SOUTH
AMERICA
Many scholars have put
forth the view that ancient
inscriptions from around
the world can be decoded
with the help of Sanskrit
and as mentioned in
previous posts German
linguist Kurt Schildmann
(1909-2005) has done
immense work on this
subject, especially the
decoding of the Crespi
Collection of artifacts.
Father Carlo Crespi, hailing
from Milan in Italy, lived in
the small town of Cuenca,
Ecuador for more than
50 years. He was a priest
of the Church of Maria
Auxiliadora. Crespi was
accepted by the indigenous
population of Ecuador as a
friend and they brought him
ancient precious objects
as presents. These objects

are now placed at a

museum in the Salesian
School in Ecuador. The
artifacts belonged to the
ancient Peru/Ecuador
region of South America.
Later Kurt Schildmann
decoded many of the glyph
and artifacts from this
collection. Here is another
glyph that Schildmann
decoded with the aid of
what he called PaleoSanskrit. The message is
Vedic!

THE WORD
'ELEPHANT', ITS
SANSKRIT
SOURCE, AND THE
CRESPI ARTIFACT
COLLECTION OF
PERU AND
ECUADOR
English etymological
dictionaries like
etymonline.com trace the
source of the word
'elephant' to 'ibhah' (),
which is a Sanskrit word
meaning 'elephant'. The
elephant-keeper is known
as 'ibhapa' ().
German linguist Kurt
Schildmann (1909-2005), in
his work, 'The Schildmann
Decipherment', stated that
his research on ancient
inscriptions discovered in
Peru and Ecuador had
revealed that they were
similar to ancient Indus
Valley' inscriptions. He had
deciphered the inscriptions
with the help of sanskrit.
As mentioned in the
previous post Schildmann
was particularly struck by
one artifact from the
'Crespi Artifact Collection.
This ancient artifact is
pyramid shaped and has
the inscription of an
elephant and the sun on
http://vediccafe.blogspot.com.br/ (36 de 68)18/09/2014 17:11:11

Vedic Cafe

top followed by three rows

of text-characters.

The Elephant Pyramid Artifact, Ecuador/Peru.

The inscriptions have been decoded
with the help of Paleo-Sanskrit

Schildmann deciphered the

first row as 'pil' which is
the same as 'pilu' (). It
is one of the many Sanskrit
words for elephant.
Schildmann decoded the
second word as 'alepi' and
said that 'alepi' is Semitic
for 'elephant'. Though if
one were to decode the
second line in reverse
order it still reads close to
'pila' or 'pilu'. The 'third line
is decoded as 'hosti' which
is the same as Sanskrit
'hasti' () meaning
'elephant'.
Vinay Vaidya says, "We see
that the one who looks
after an elephant is called
piluvAn or piluvantaH (one
http://vediccafe.blogspot.com.br/ (37 de 68)18/09/2014 17:11:11

riding a 'pilu') in Sanskrit.

Then transformation of a
'piluvantaH' into the word
'elephant' is just a twist
and turn of the tongue. And
I am sure, this Alepi is likewise a cognate of the same
word."
A slight tweaking of the
three words 'pil', 'alepi' and
'hosti', to 'pIt' (),
'Alepa' () and
'hasti' (), - changes the
meaning to 'golden',
'smeared', 'elephant'. In
Sanskrit 'pIt' () means
'yellow' or 'gold', 'alepa'
means 'smeared', and
'hasti' is 'elephant'. The
inscription would then
read, 'gold smeared
elephant' or 'the golden
elephant' - which probably
also explains the 'sun'
inscribed on the top
section of the artifact.

SANSKRIT
DECODES ANCIENT
GLYPH FROM
SOUTH AMERICA THE SRI GANESHA
CONNECT

Many scholars have put

forth the view that the
undeciphered Indus valley
inscriptions are a script of
the Sanskrit language. In
his work, now labeled
'Schildmann
Decipherment', German
linguist Kurt Schildmann
(1909-2005), said that his
study of ancient
inscriptions discovered in
the caves of Peru and the
United States shows that
they are similar to ancient
Indus Valley 'Sanskrit',
suggesting that seafarers
from India may have
reached the Americas
thousands of years ago. He
called the 'language 'PaleoSanskrit'. Scroll down to
the end to see the tables of
inscriptions and the sounds
each inscription represents.
Schildmann described the
Indus civilization as a
forerunner of other world
civilizations. While doing
research on the Crespi
artifact collection of
Cuenca, Peru, Schildmann
discovered Sanskrit in
inscriptions found there, as
well as in the Burrows
cave in southern Illinois,
USA. Russel Burrows, a
retired colonel of the U.S.

armed forces, had

accidentally discovered
the cave on April 2, 1982.
Schildmann had noticed
the similarity between the
language of the
inscriptions on the Crespi
artifact in Peru and the
Burrows' cave after having
deciphered the inscriptions
in the Indus Valley. He also
said that an icon found in
the Burrows' depicted the
'wisdom of the Indus Valley
culture of India'.
But first a look at the
Cuenca inscription.
Schildmann was struck by
the drawing of an elephant
on top of a 'pyramid', with
three lines of a legend in
the artifact found in Peru.

The Elephant Pyramid Artifact, Peru.

Schildman deciphered the

first row as 'pil', which he
linked to the Akkadian
word for 'elephant'. Now,
the Akkadian dictionary
says that the exact word
for 'elephant' is 'pilu', 'piru'
or 'peru'. The female
elephant in Sanskrit is
known as 'pillaka' ()
even today. The ancient
Sanskrit word for 'elephant'
is 'pilla' (). Also what
is interesting is that a
prominent name for Sri
Ganesha, the Vedic
elephant-god, in Tamil is
'Pillai'.

Sri Ganesha - the Vedic

Elephant God
is also known as Pillai in
Dravadian Languages.
In Sanskrit also 'pilla' ()
means 'elephant

Researcher A. K. Narain
states that the words pallu,
pella, and pell in the
Dravidian family of
languages signify 'tooth or
tusk', also 'elephant tooth
or tusk'.
A variant of 'pilu' in
Akkadian, as mentioned
above is 'peru'. Is it
possible that the country
name 'Peru' is linked to the
'elephant' - assuming that
it was known by the same
name thousands of years
back. Again, 'peru' ()
also means 'golden
mountain' in Sanskrit, and
that it refers to the
pyramid shape of the
artifact is another
possibility.

Schildmann decoded the

second word as 'alepi' and
said that 'alepi' is Semitic
for 'elephant'. Though if
one were to decode the
second line in reverse
order it still reads as
'peala'. The 'third line is
decoded as 'hosti' which is
the same as Sanskrit
'hasti' () meaning
'elephant'.
Professor Kurt Schildmann
work called 'The
Decipherment' has
unfortunately disappeared
from publication, however
a copy of his work in his
own handwriting still
exists and efforts are being
made to reveal this
suppressed information so
that recognition may be
given to this profound work
in the study of Paleolithic
culture worldwide.

THE MOUNTAIN &

RIVER NAMES OF
THE URAL RANGE
OF RUSSIA - A
SPRINKLING OF
SANSKRIT

Mount Yamantau is the highest mountain in the

Southern Urals. Though the
name means 'evil' mountain in the local Bashkir
language, its name seems to be
derived from Sanskrit 'yamya' () which means
'southern'.
It could also be named after the Vedic Lord Yama, who
emerges as 'Jima' in the Iranian legends

In the book, 'On the

Possible Location of the
Holy Hara and Meru
Mountain', the author S.
Zharnikova states that, "...
precisely in the watershed
section of Northern Urals
http://vediccafe.blogspot.com.br/ (54 de 68)18/09/2014 17:11:11

Vedic Cafe

(Russia), to this day, there are

many place names of intriguing
similarity of Indo Iranian words:
Harino, Harova, Harina
Mountain, Harinskoye,
Harinskaya, Harinovskaya:
Mandara, Mandarova, Mandra;
Ripino, Ripinka, Ripa (and
Reipie Mountain). Just as
interesting are the river names
of still unknown origin: Indola,
Indomanka, Sindosa, Varna,
Striga, Svaga, Svalka,
Hvarzenta, Harina, Pana, Kobra,
Tora, Arza etc."
The author states that
these 'Indo-Iranian' names
are of 'unknown origin'. But
each one of these names
are words of the Sanskrit
language and therefore
easily explained, some of
them are even mentioned
as proper nouns in the
Indian scriptures. The 18th
and 19th century author
often traced the names to
the ancient Iranian
language called Avestan
but never ventured further
back in history with the
help of Sanskrit.
'Hari' () is Sanskrit for
'god' and 'hari' ()
means 'captivating'. God is
referred to as 'hara' in
Sanskrit in the sense as
the one who 'captivates'.
'Mandara' () means
'heaven'. 'Mandara' is the
name of the mountain that
appears in the 'Samudra
Manthan' episode in the
Hindu Puranas, where it
was used as a churning rod
to churn the ocean of milk.
Vishnu's serpent, Vasuki,
offered to serve as the
rope pulled on one side by
a team of asuras, and on
the other, by a team of
http://vediccafe.blogspot.com.br/ (55 de 68)18/09/2014 17:11:11

Vedic Cafe

devas.
'Ropa' ( ) is Sanskrit for
'act of raising', and
'ropita' () means 'that
which is elevated' and
therefore indicates a
'mountain'.
The river names are
interesting too. First of all
there is a 'Sindosa' river in
the Urals and is obviously
linked to the 'Sindh' of
India. The 'Sindh' river or
the Indus gets its name
from Lord 'Indra'. In the
Urals too, there exist river
names such as Indola and
Indomanka.
Then there are the 'Striga'
and the 'Svaga'. They are
at once a reminder of the
River Ganga of India, or
even of the Volga.. In
Sanskrit 'ganga' means
'swift-goer'.
Russian historian and
Linguist Nikolai Trubetzkoy
(1890-1938), in his lectures
at the University of Vienna,
traced the origins of the
name 'Volga' to the Slavic
'Jilga', which he said, in
course of time changed to
the name 'Volga'.
Roman Jakobson, Russian
linguist and literary
theorist, quoted Nikolai
Trubetzkoy's research
thus, "In primitive eastern
Slavic, un-rounded front
vowels changed into
rounded back vowels
before a tauto-syllabic 'l',
so that 'jilga' must have
changed to julga; the initial
'j' was lost before rounded
vowels in eastern Slavic,
and the initial u acquired
an obligatory 'v'. Thus the
http://vediccafe.blogspot.com.br/ (56 de 68)18/09/2014 17:11:11

Vedic Cafe

form 'vulga' arose, and the

short 'u' changed in the
12th13th centuries into
'o'. So through a long
series of changes Jilga
became Volga".
Jilga is a close cognate of
the Sanskrit 'jalaga',
'jala' () is water, 'ga'
stems from the Sanskrit
'gam' () and indicates
'movement' - so that 'julga'
means 'flowing water'.
The name of the river
'Pana' is explained by the
Sanskrit 'pana' () which
means a 'drink'. The name
'Arza' is explained by the
word 'aarsha' () which
means 'speech of the
sages'; in fact the Vedas
are also known as 'Aarsha'.
The name 'Tara' is
explained by Sanskrit
'tara' () which means
'fluid'.
The name Hvarzenta
seems to be derived from
the Sanskrit
'varasha' () meaning
'rain'. Another river in
Russia by the name
'Varzina' seems to have the
same etymological source.
The present day river
names may also have their
source in Sanskrit.

http://vediccafe.blogspot.com.br/ (57 de 68)18/09/2014 17:11:11

Vedic Cafe

The present day river names of Eastern Europe.

Sukhona, Dvina, Vyatka, Kama and Pecchora
probably have Sanskrit roots.

According to the Max

Vasmer's Etymological
Dictionary, the name
'Sukhona' originates from
Russian and most likely
means "a river with a dry
(hard) bottom". If the
operative word here is
'dry', then 'Sukhona'
derives from the Sanskrit
'shushka' () from
http://vediccafe.blogspot.com.br/ (58 de 68)18/09/2014 17:11:11

Vedic Cafe

which the Hindi word

'sukha' derives. Max
Vasmer (186-1962) was a
Russian born German
linguist.
In his works, Max Vasmer
stated that the toponym
'Dvina' clearly cannot stem
from a language of the Ural
region, its origin is unclear
and may have possibly
originated from an IndoEuropean root word which
used to mean river or
stream. The word may
hence be related to the
Sanskrit root word
'dhaav' () which means
'to flow'.
The etymology of 'Vytaka'
is completely unknown. In
Sanskrit 'Vyatiga' ()
means 'pass by'. The
Sanskrit origins of 'Kama'
are well known and
explains the name of the
river Kama. Finally the
name 'Pecchora'- in
Sanskrit
'Picchora' () means
a 'pipe' and the Hindi
'picchakari' (water-gun)
derives from 'picchora'.

MT. MERU AND THE

SANSKRIT ORIGINS
http://vediccafe.blogspot.com.br/ (59 de 68)18/09/2014 17:11:11

Vedic Cafe

OF THE
ZOROASTRIAN 'MT.
HARA LEGEND'
In the Rigveda Mt. Meru is
described as a
transcendental mountain
extending from the deepest
ocean up into space. The
summit of Meru says the
Rig Veda is near the North
Star or Polaris.
Meru has often been
interpreted to be a
mountain, even though the
word 'meru' () in
Sanskrit means 'spine'. For
example, the human spinal
nerve is known as 'merucheta ( -). It is
therefore correct to
interpret 'meru' as the
'axis' of the earth.
In fact Indian texts refer to
three parts of the axis, the
'sumeru' () which is
the end that points to the
Pole Star, the centre which
is the 'meru', and
'kumeru' () which is
the southern tip of the
earth's axis.
In Avestan cosmogony, Mt.
Hara and not Mt. Meru, is
the geographic center of
the universe. The pinnacle
of Mt. Hara is Mount
Hukairya, translated as 'of
good activity' in the Yasht,
a collection of 21
Zoroastrian hymns. From
Hara springs the source of
all waters of the world.
These waters rush down
from the mountain as the
mighty world river Aredvi
Sura Anahita (translated as
'fertile, powerful, spotless),
which in turn feed the
http://vediccafe.blogspot.com.br/ (60 de 68)18/09/2014 17:11:11

Vedic Cafe

great sea Vourukasa, upon

which the world rests.
The Avestan 'Aredvi'
meaning fertile' has its
source in Sanskrit
'artava' () meaning
'fertile', 'sura' () is
Sanskrit for 'goddess' and
hence the equivalent of the
Avestan 'powerful',
'anahita' from Sanskrit 'anaahita' ( -) 'that which
is 'proper' - 'ahita' ()
means 'improper', the
prefix 'ana' reverses the
meaning.
In Sanskrit 'good activity'
may be translated as 'sukarya' ( - ) and may
therefore be the source of
the Avestan 'Hukairya' - the
Sanskrit 's' distorts to 'h'
exactly as it does in the
name 'Sindhu' to 'Hindu'!
By the same logic 'Hara',
which in Avestan legend is
the source all waters of the
world, may indeed be
'sara' () which is Sanskrit
for 'spring', or' fluid' or
'water-body'.
The sacred plant 'haoma'
grows on Hara, which
indeed then has to be the
Vedic 'soma' () - the
elixir of the gods. Another
possibility is that the word
'hara' may have passed on
into Hebrew and Avestan
from Sanskrit 'hara'
meaning 'god'.For more on
this click here.
The Zoroastrian texts say
that Hara is free of the
'devas' - who are regarded
as 'false gods' and 'evil
spirits'. As the separation
of the Zoroastrianism from
http://vediccafe.blogspot.com.br/ (61 de 68)18/09/2014 17:11:11

Vedic Cafe

the Vedas progressed, the

'devas' began to be
regarded as 'evil' and the
'asura' became the object
of reverence. Hence the
name Ahura Mazda - the
highest spirit of worship in
Zoroastrianism. Once again
the 'h' of Ahura may be
read as 's'.
Researchers and explorers
trying to locate the original
'Meru' are unlikely to find it
geographically. The name
is not mythical, it is
however the interpretation
that is incorrect. The
'meru' of the Vedas is a
reference to the earth's
axis, and there is much
more to the concept of
Meru.
The 4th century BCE Indian
mathematician Pingala
described Mount Meru as a
pyramid of numbers that
can be added together
diagonally into the wellknown series {1, 1, 2, 3, 5,
8, 13, 21 ... } now named
after Fabionacci found
throughout nature as
proportions of growth.
The Fibonacci Sequence is
the series of numbers
where the next number is
found by adding up the two
numbers before it. For
example, the 3 in the
series is found by adding
the two numbers before it
(1+2). If we take a number
in the series and divide it
by the number preceding it,
we find that as we
progress down the series
we reach the perfect value
of phi= 1.6180339... and so
on.

Vedic Cafe

Pingala's 'Prastara-Meru' or 'Steps of Meru'.

The triangle was later adopted by
Fibonacci in his work in Mathematics
from the original works of Pingala,
the ancient Indian mathematician.

Pingala indicated through

his 'Prastara Meru' that all
solar system periods fit the
Fibonacci series. His Meru
Pyramid concept links all
the planets and the Sun
into a harmonious system
represented by the
Fibonacci series.
Another another Indian
mathematician, Bhaskara
presented a triangular
array of the binomial
coefficients as 'Khanda
Meru', later adopted by
Pascal and today known as
Pascal's Triangle.

Pascal's Triangle is derived from

the 'Khanda-Meru' of the
ancient Indian mathematician
Bhaskaracharya

THE UPPSALA
TEMPLE, SWEDEN THE SANSKRIT
CONNECT
Uppsala is the capital of
Uppsala County and the
fourth largest city of
Sweden. The ancient
Temple at Uppsala was a
religious center in the
ancient Norse religion once.
Located at what is now
Gamla Uppsala ('gamla' is
Swedish for 'old'), this
temple is attested in Adam
of Bremen's 11th-century
work 'Gesta Hammaburgensis
Ecclesiae Pontificum' and in
Heimskringla, written by
Snorri Sturluson in the 13th
century.
So what is the etymology
of this word. Western
scholars trace the word
sala in Uppsala to German
Saal, Romanian Sala, Dutch
zaal, Icelandic salur,
Swedish and Danish sal,
Finnish sali, French salle

and Italian sala - ultimately

to the reconstructed
language Proto-IndoEuropean, which of course
never existed.

Sweden Uppsala Mound

In Sanskrit 'upa' () means

'above' and 'shala' ()
means 'hall' - literally 'the
hall above'. The suffix
'shala' is commonly used in
Sanskrit and Hindi in words
such as 'pathshala' ()
'school', 'gaushala' ()
'cow-shed' etc.
