THE ENNEAGRAM: ITS APPLICATION AND RELEVANCE TO MY LIFE AS AN

ACCOUNTANCY STUDENT
By: Psalm David S. Prea

Youre too skinny Youre too soft and caring Youre too sensitive Youre too
feminine Youre too clumsy Youre too weak Youre too lazy Youre too detached
Youre such a push-over Youre such a wimp.
In a thousand ways, the society dictates us to be this and not that. And implicit in
these laws is the belief that our personalities are bendable as pipe cleaner: that we can
choose to be someone radically different from who we're inclined to be and mould ourselves
into that new shape by sheer force of will.
Being a boy who grew up playing with no one, I became a clumsy little push-over to
my supposed-to-be playmates during grade school. I desperately tried to fit-in with them.
I have tried doing things just to be considered one of them. From eating junkfoods to
punching someone because of a silly dare. Yes, I have done it all. But even at a young age,
I became a Bohemian someone with unconventional lifestyle: somebody, who does not
live according to the conventions of society. I became a hater to the stereotyping,
conforming, and rule-following. I became a little rule-breaker. I disobeyed rules and made
my own. I dont need to follow the rules I deemed not necessary for my own personal
growth.
CURIOSITY was the first thing that came to my mind when I heard about the
Enneagram. Somehow, truly knowing yourself amidst all the conformity and stereotyping is
one of the hardest things I know. And as I continue my journey of knowing myself through
this thing called Enneagram, I have learned that I am a Dominant type number 4 with a
type 5 wing. Some of its attributes that have left a marked on me are:

FOURs are highly sensitive and almost always artistically gifted. They can
express their feelings in dance, music, painting, theater, or literature.

They dislike being ordinary and always want to be apart from ordinary
people. What is ordinary does not catch the eye of a FOUR. They hate
everything that is stale, old-fashioned, plain, average, styleless, and
normal.

They dislike rules and laws and always want to go their own way.

They do not want to be told what to do and who to be. They want to be
themselves and be the unique people that they are.

They are attracted to the dark side, and the tragic gives them energy.

Yeah, these are just some of the attributes of the Type 4 that are just speaking to
me. While these are the attributes of my wing that applied to me:

They like to observe, but they dont like to be observed. They dislike
intrusiveness.

They love to watch. They are curious about everything. They are always
searching, asking questions, and delving into things in depth.

Their favorite phrase is Interesting. (Although for me its COOL)

They are fascinated by intellectual systems or theories and always say, I

know more than other people and I understand the world better than
other people.

Immature FIVEs are afraid of commitments.

When I saw these attributes, the first thing that came into my mind was: THIS IS
ME! OMG THIS IS REALLY ME!
As for my arrows, I have a 1 and 2 as my Positive and my Negative Arrow
respectively. In my perspective, I become progressive like health ones whenever Im in my
crests. I am open-minded but also a perfectionist. Always the one who checks the littlest
details and the minute scrunches in every output. During group activities, I tend to be the
conscientious one the one who does the quality checks and the touch-ups of our
product. But in my troughs, I become dissatisfied like unhealthy twos; I tend to feel
alienated and disappointed with all the happenings in my life.
Before learning the Enneagram, I was thinking that somehow, I think that I have
already red this thing somewhere in the internet. In the middle of the lesson I was thinking:
Hey, this thing really is true. And What Type are my friends? And after our lesson I was
like Oh yeah, I am a number 4, new knowledge. Something new to tell my friends.
In the end, I learned about how this Enneagram works. While I saw a quotation that
said: Some people think that the Enneagram puts people in boxes. But in fact, it is
the other way around. The Enneagram shows us what boxes to get out of.
But as for me, The Enneagram does not put us in different boxes with labels
but it actually puts us all in one big box telling us that we are one.

I am not made like any of those I have seen. I venture to believe that I am not
made like any of those who are in existence. If I am not better, at least I am
different.
