But the Desks are Too Small
One of the most important changes in education is the effort to educate adults in school who
didnt have the opportunity to go to school at all. Governments are starting education programmes to
teach them how to read and write, how to farm, how to be healthier, etc... The basic belief behind
these programmes is that a country will be economically and politically stronger if its people are
educated.
Adult education faces many obstacles. For one thing, adults are not accustomed to attending
school. Also, many adults are ashamed or afraid to go back to school. They often think that they will
appear to be unintelligent or that they will fail. In addition, adults often have little time for education.
They have jobs and families and cannot take six or more hours every day to go to school, so school
must go to the adults. On the other hand, adults have some advantages in education. As they have
already accumulated a wealth of experience of life in general which helps them in learning, they know
what knowledge will be useful and what will not.
