A CALL TO PRAISE

There is just something special about being with a new church.

The West

Simi Christian Church in Simi Valley, California started out about two years

ago.

It grew out of a prayer meeting that had been fellowshipping together for

just a few months.

The group decided that if they could find a place to meet, they would try
to form themselves into a congregation and see what would happen. They prayed,
and during the week they received word that they would be able to meet in a

school building. On their first Sunday, not knowing what to expect, they had
forty people. For several months they met and soon decided to call Rusty and
Carol Howard as their minister.

Now the West Simi Christian Church has been meeting for two years.

Simi

Valley is about 45 minutes outside of Los Angeles and primarily consists of

young people. In fact, the statistics show that 65% of the 92,000 people of
Simi Valley are fifteen years or younger. Consequently, the congregation also
reflects this youth.

During the past two years the West Simi Christian Church has not used a
yearly budget, but has simply utilized the resources that were given. As a
matter of fact, they do not even "pass the plate." A collection box is placed
at the rear of the small building they now rent.

On October 8 during an evening fellowship meal, (the church has no evening

worship service) the folks at West Simi had their first Faith Promise Rally.
Robyn and I were there to participate. We were to be the first foreign mission
aries of the church, and Rusty had told me previously that he hoped the church
could pledge about $100 a month to us.
ButI This church of some 80 members responded in faith to our needs, and
when the figures were tallied, a full $260 per month was pledged. What a

tremendous congregation!

Of course, the West Simi Christian Church is only one of many that I could

highlight in this period of support-raising. There are others who are equallywilling to sacrifice so that the Good News of Jesus Christ can be preached to
the nomadic Samburu of Kenya, Africa.

We were not able to meet our projected departure for a September

beginning in language school in Nairobi, Kenya. A new term at that school

begins in January, and we plan to arrive in Kenya December 21st for this term.
