INTRODUCTION
Book eleven in the DRUM READER series deals with ties and syncopation in various time sig
hatures.Like the previous ten books In this collection of studies the meter signs are 2/4,
314,414 ,5/4,6/4,7/4,follosed by moter signs in 3/8,5/8,6/8,7/2,9/8, and 12/8,
Syncopation can be created either by rests or ties.You'll notice throughout thts work there
are no rests.iiovever the effect of rests are created hy using ties.You play the note on the
left side of the te and don't play the note on the right side or the end of the tled group
of notes.
Renenber though when there are ties,the notes that are not played have value because they
are added to the note they are tied to.A half note tied to a quarter note would nov be valued
for three quarter notes.
Since you are noy reading book eleven in this series of studies you showld be quaite advanced
as a reader.1 assume you understand the many variations of notations. .using ties dots,and the

DEVELOPING YOUR READING 1N 3/8,5/8,6/8,7/8,9/ and 12/8 ‘TES: SIGIATCRES
In my many years of teaching T have found most drum students «nd many professtonals very
weak in their control of reading in time signatures where the eighth note gets the beat
I guess this 1s because most of us have been brought up in our early days in reading cime
Signatures where the quarter note gets the heat:2/4,,3/4, 44/4, 5/44,5/4, 57/4,,Those secm to
be the easiest for most percussion players because this is where we all start to learn to
read.
It is easy to develop reading in these time signs because when we start with 4/4 tine,as
ost instruction books dove can wraduate to $/4 ox b/d or 7/4 or even 9/4 and 12/4 tine
Tt is easier to go darn to 3/4 or 2/4 From che 4/4 time sign because all you have to do is
count the shorter measures..3/4 ix one beat less than 4/4..2/4 is twa beats tess than 4/4
time. Thus this is easy to do.
Since our early days of reading is developed around the quarter qote beat tine signatures,
when we yet introduced to the tine signacures where the eighth note receives the beat it
Bets confusing.
I think the problem lies in the fact that most of us don't really understand what the word
BEAT means..A BEAT 1S THE MEASUREMENT OP SOUND. .A BEAT STARTS ON ONE HUMBER COUNT AND ENDS UP
WHEN WE START THE NEXT NUMBER COUNT: Thus the count of ONE starts the first beat in the
Measure and the count of TKO starts the second beat in the measure and the count of teo
also the end of the first beat.-RIGH ON THY, COUNT OF THO Wh END THE FIRST SEAT AND START
SECOND BEAT:
When the quarter note Is divided into two parts the aunber count of one starts the beat. .the
AN count is the half way mark of tho first beat and the count of INO starts and alo ends the
beat.
When we read the time signatures where the eighth note gets the beat the same thing happens.
ONLY THIS TIME WE ARE DIVIDING AN EIGHTH NOTE INTO TWO PARTS.HicH ETGHTH NOTE GETS A BEAT AS
IN 3/8 TIME.The sound of 3/8 is the same sound of 3/4 hvever in 3/8 time the edghth note is
the beat and in 3/4 time the quarter note is the beat:T know this has confused many players
but alt you need do is think of the eighth note as the beat in the tine signatures where the
eighth note is the beat:
3/8 has three eighth notes in a measures5/8 has five eighth notes ina measure: 6/8 has six
eighth notes in a measure; 7/8 has seven eighth nots In cach measure; 9/8 has nine eighths
in each measure; and 12/8 has twelve eighth notes in each measure:Nay we are using the cighth
Rote as the Full form of the heat..THE FIGITH NOTE EN the signatures where clghth get tho beat
are divided into evo parts:How ever the eighth note in the tine signatures where there ave
quarter notes getting the beat,as in 4/4 Cime,the eighth note now only receives one half of a
beat:
I suggest you read as much material as possible where the eighth note gets the beat and train
your mind to ehink of the eighth note as the beat and this is the measurment of the tine.DON'T
THINK OF EIGITH NOTES AS THEY ARE WHERE THE QUARTER NOTE GETS THE BEAT. REMEMBER AN ELGHTH
NOTE TS ONLY ONE HALF OF A QUARTER NOTE IN 4/4 TIME AND THIS IS ONLY HALE OF \ BEAT. THE BEAT
IS THE AMMUNT OF TLYE LT TAKES TO CET FROM ONE NUMBER COUNT TO THE NEXT NUMBER COUNT:

CERNED. It is one of the methods of playing as many beats as vou need to play as a supoort
behind other sections in the archestra.Ten heats, twenty or no matter hay many you need. The tie
allows you to extend your sound.Either rolling on a snare dru ton tom or a cymbal.

Playing the first five pages:Untill you have gone through each book;This nethod of review
can help you understand the studies in cach of the first cleven books in che DRUM READER

Play each book once on the drum pad with metal sticks:Then play each book once on your
snare drum with either a 28 stick or the weight stick you actually use when playing behind your
drums:This is good training and will help you control your snare drum:
Play book one with metal sticks on a pad:Play book evo on a pad with wooden sticks:Play book
three on pad with metal scicks:Play book four on pad with wooden sticks:Play book five with
