On-going project as PI & Co-PI

Pathological cultural, variability and sequence diversity in Rhizocotonia bataticola

causing dry root rot disease in chickpea (Cicer aerietinum L.) funded by SERB.
Addressing Phytophthora Blight Disease: An Emerging Threat to Pigeonpea
Expansion and Production funded by NFSM, GOI.
Enhancing the income of resource poor farmers through introduction and expansion of
improved crop production technologies (ICPT) of chickpea and other crops in rainfed
rice fallow lands (RRFL) in Jharkhand funded by DST, GOI.
Climate change analysis of pigeonpea diseases in semi-arid tropics to develop
appropriate disease management strategy funded by USAID, USA.

Project scope:

Reported diversity in R. bataticola populations in India, a total of 94 isolates collected

from R. bataticola infected chickpea plants from different agro climatic regions of
India were analyzed with AFLP and rDNA-ITS region sequencing and different
morphological properties and found that R. bataticola populations present in India
were very diverse with respect to their different cultural and morphological
parameters. Five AFLP primer combinations provided a total 121 polymorphic
fragments. The dendrogram based on AFLP and ITS sequencing analysis showed that
the R. bataticola isolates were diverse and did not depend on geographical origin. This
results will helpful to identify durable resistance to the chickpea resistance
breedingprogram

Characterized several chickpea and pigeonpea infecting fungus like Phytophthora

cajani causing Phytophthora blight of pigeonpea, Alternaria tenuissima and Alternaria
alternata causing Alternaria blight on pigeonpea and Alternaria alternata causing
Alternaria blight of chickpea firsttime from India at molecular level to identify durable
resistance to the chickpea and pigeonpea resistance breeding program.

Identified several chickpea lines resistant to Fusarium wilt in multi-environment as

well as greenhouse and identified new sources of resistance to Fusarium wilt and
sterility mosaic disease in a mini-core collection of pigeonpea germplasm in FW-SMD
sick plot. These lines are useful to the chickpea and pigeonpea resistance breeding
program.

Technology dissemination

Chickpea area in expanded in rain-fed rice fallow lands of Chhattisgarh and Madhya
Pradesh, a total of 2893 farmers from four targeted districts in Chhattisgarh and 3420
farmers were selected from four targeted districts in Madhya Pradesh were selected to
demonstrate Improved Pulse Production and Protection Technology (IPPPT),
Participatory Varietal Selection (PVS) and Village Level Seed System (VLSS) onfarm trials during the 2008-09 to 2011-12 post rainy season.
A total of 6396 farmers in Chhattisgarh state and 3409 farmers from Madhya Pradesh,
attended training in target villages. Further, handson training was also given to
farmers during trial monitoring and visits to the research institutions

Characterization of etiological agent of yellow vein mosaic disease of kenaf (Hibiscus
cannabinus), Roselle (Hibiscus sabdariffa) and Jute (Chorchorus capsularis) and
development of strategy for the management of the disease
Control of virus diseases of bast fiber crops.
Project scope:
Characterization of etiological agent of yellow vein mosaic disease of kenaf (Hibiscus
cannabinus) & Roselle (Hibiscus sabdariffa).
Development of strategy for the management of the disease.
Reported new recombinant begomoviruses and satellite DNA beta molecules infecting
bastfibre crops from India. Among these begomoviruses, three new species of
begomoviruses have been identified for the first time and they were reported to be
associated with yellow vein mosaic and leaf curl diseases of mesta crop. Association
of a New World begomovirus with yellow mosaic disease of jute has been reported for
the first time in the country. A disease forecasting model in begomovirus infection vis-vis weather parameter and whitefly-vector population has been demonstrated with
respect to mesta yellow vein mosaic disease. The diagnostic tools and vector control
strategy against these viruses have been developed. Biochemical alteration upon
infection with a New World virus has been also studied.

Begomoviruses associated with several host (Sida cordifolia L., Croton

bonplandianum L., Malachra capitata L., Eclipta prostrata L., Clerodendron inerme
L., Acalypha indica L., Urena lobata L. and Bhendi yellow vein mosaic virus) were
characterized first time at molecular level from India to identify the reservoir of the
begomovitus during off-season.
