Dear one-north Community,

The first three months of 2015 saw many changes in the
landscape at Fusionopolis-Ayer Rajah-Mediapolis; the
hoardings for Fusionopolis Two and Galaxis have been
removed, marking the end of construction for the six
developments in the Fusionopolis precinct. Across the
road, JTC LaunchPad @ one-north, which is envisioned to
be a vibrant start-up cluster to breed and develop great
ideas from entrepreneurs in Singapore, was officially
opened in January. Diagonally across, the Equinix SG3 and
Seagates Shugart buildings were also completed. Further
down the road, the Multi-Utility Hub has seen the park
above ground progress well, developing into a serene lush
and green space for all to enjoy, while providing for the
necessary infrastructure and utilities to serve the
one-north estate.

The 200-hectare business park

One-north Residences, Fraser Place Fusionopolis and

Park Avenue Rochester have also been built,
offering exclusive residential options in
one-north. And Star Vista, Rochester Park
and Fusionopolis have been added to
create a vibrant retail scene and provide
the community with great dining and
entertainment experiences.
There are also many learning facilities
including business schools like
INSEAD and ESSEC, Unilever and
BASFs corporate universities that have
called one-north their home. They have
contributed to the global talent pool already
present in one-north.

How did one-north come about?

It started with Singapores vision to nurture
entrepreneurship and high-tech businesses. JTC, A*STAR,
EDB, SPRING and URA got together to conceptualise a
science hub in the Buona Vista district.
For JTC, our role was to identify and develop dedicated
precincts in one-north to grow the target industries. There
is Biopolis for biomedical activities, Fusionopolis for
infocomms and Mediapolis for the media sector.
Developing one-north is no mean feat. There was a lot to
consider. JTC had to analyse the best approach to
incorporate residential, retail, lifestyle and educational
facilities as components to create a vibrant community.
We had to optimise land use and put in place the vast
infrastructure required to support business activities.
Today, all the facilities in one-north are served
by a network of roads and reliable basic
utilities, like power, water supply and
telecommunications. Some of these
essentials were built underground to
maintain the aesthetics of the landscape.
You cant see them but they are there to
keep the estate functioning smoothly.
Is the progress of one-north on track?
I am very pleased with what we have
achieved so far. If you look around, you
can clearly see the results of our efforts
in Biopolis, Fusionopolis One and Two,
LaunchPad and Mediapolis Park. Its
flattering to know that renowned
companies like Lucasfilm, Mediacorp,
P&G and Seagate, appreciate the
advantages of this integrated
business park and have all set
up their operations here.
Ascendas, Capitamall and Ho

What are the new developments we can look forward

to?
The vision for one-north is to make it a world-class R&D
and business park that can catalyse the development of
high value-added clusters. Work, live, play and learn
elements are integrated into the parks design so as to
provide a harmonious and conducive environment that
can facilitate scientific and business collaboration
and growth.
We will be embarking on many exciting
projects to support this vision. The
community will continue to enjoy state-of
the-art infrastructure that enhances the
work environment in one-north. We are
exploring suitable transport modes to enhance
the last-mile connectivity from the MRT

stations. There is an ongoing feasibility study which JTC

is looking into that will physically connect the
communities between one-north and the Singapore
Science Park by building infrastructure across the Ayer
Rajah Expressway (AYE), which we call the air rights
development (have reference to the insert box below).
This year, drivers can look forward to the completion of
vehicular signage throughout one-north. It will make
navigation around the park easier. The new Parking
Guidance System will help drivers find available car
park lots in Biopolis and Fusionopolis quickly.
For pedestrians, covered linkways will be built
to connect from Fusionopolis and Mediapolis
for a more comfortable commuting
experience.
Anything interesting coming up for
the one-north community?
To build a sense of home at
one-north, we are stepping up our
efforts to create a stronger identity and
to build a more vibrant and close-knit community.
This newsletter, for instance, is one of the first steps
towards community building. We have run the
one-north Photo Contest and organised the first
one-north Customer Networking Evening last year. You
can look forward to more of such community initiatives
coming your way.
There are also a lot of facilities and amenities in
one-north, whether it is for sports, learning, food,
shopping or entertainment. Each of the seven precincts
in one-north has its own distinctive characteristics. Go
on foot or ride on a bicycle to discover new nooks and
crannies. You may be pleasantly surprised by what you
can find!
Lastly, have fun taking part in some of the activities
around one-north. Those are the moments when you
can connect with others in the community and build
friendships. These friendships will in turn enhance and
enrich your experience and may even turn ideas into
businesses.

Linking space, bridging minds

JTC is exploring the possibility of erecting buildings,
walkways and communal spaces across a major
highway. This would be a first in land-scarce Singapore
if the idea can jump from the blueprint to actual
construction.
Already, a feasibility study is underway to assess the
viability of this idea, which is called air rights
developments, for one-north.
Besides creating usable space above major highway
corridors, the development will serve as a bridge to
connect one-north, Science Park and the National
University of Singapore with inestimable potential for
collaboration among the these world-class think tanks.

also curates a calendar of events throughout the year for
community building, where start-ups can enjoy
unprecedented exchange and interaction

LaunchPads proximity to the nearby public and
private research institutes as well as tertiary
institutions (e.g. A*STAR, National University of
Singapore, Singapore Polytechnic) means you can
tap into a steady stream of talent, expertise,
knowledge and resources.
With the overwhelming response from the start-up
community, three new blocks are in the pipeline that will
allow another 250 more start-ups to join the LaunchPad
community, bringing the total supply of start-up space in
one-north to 40,000 sqm. This will help more start-ups to
kick-start their entrepreneurship journey.

LaunchPad is jointly spearheaded by JTC and SPRING, and supported by ACE,

A*STAR, Infocomm Development Authority of Singapore (IDA), Media Development
Authority of Singapore (MDA) and National Research Foundation (NRF).
LaunchPad will house 500 start-ups across industries such as biomedical,
electronics, infocomm and media, science and engineering, with plans to
accommodate another 250 start-ups when Phase 2 is completed.

PM Lee leaves his mark @ LaunchPad

Murals that tell a story

Taking selfies with tenants and chatting with some of the 300
guests who turned up on 23 January 2015, Prime Minister Lee
Hsien Loong mingled with the crowd at the official opening of
JTC LaunchPad @ one-north where he was Guest-of-Honour.

Community collaboration is an integral theme at

LaunchPad. True to form, LaunchPad tenants were actively
co-opted into focus groups as well as a voting exercise to
pick the aesthetic theme for the murals that adorn
LaunchPad today.

In his opening speech, the Guest-of-Honour, PM Lee,

commended the tenants at LaunchPad on their interesting
business ideas, mentioned that JTC is exploring other locations
in Singapore to build new LaunchPads for more promising
start-ups.
During his visit, PM Lee penned a message on one of the
Graffiti Walls, a space for tenants to leave comments and
words of inspiration. He also dropped in on three tenants Small World Group Incubator, Paperplane Pilots, and NUS
Enterprise - to learn about the innovative products of some
of the incubators and start-ups.

The focus groups involved about 19 tenants, and were

conducted over three sessions in 2014. LaunchPad tenants
were then invited to vote on three shortlisted design
themes. The aim was to select a theme that embodied the
essence of the entrepreneurial community.
Going Beyond the Horizon, a theme depicted by a
futuristic cityscape, was eventually selected by the
community. It symbolises the aspiration to set ones sights
beyond the horizon, and to break into brave new worlds.
The tagline The future starts here was chosen to signify
LaunchPads goal of helping start-ups expand their
horizons and scale new heights.

Curious about what PM Lee has written on the Graffiti Wall?

Chef Goh, how long have you been cooking and

what you do in your free time?
Im 43, and Ive been cooking professionally since
I was 17. As a chef, Im always very busy in the
kitchen, so I like to relax at home by watching Hong
Kong drama series and swimming with my four
beautiful daughters.
Tell us, what makes Min Jiang at one-north such a unique
experience?
To be honest, I havent heard of another Chinese fine-dining
restaurant thats housed in a black-and-white bungalow. So
the experience starts the moment you step in. Min Jiang
serves Sichuan and Cantonese cuisine with a modern finesse
and presentation, and thats paired with warm, personalised
service thats hard to beat.
Whats the one dish that should be on everyones bucket
list?
The house specialty is the wood-fired Beijing Duck. We
follow an ancient Chinese recipe, roasting the duck with
apple wood to give it a lovely, light aroma. Guests get to
watch our chefs skilfully carve the duck into delicate, thin
slices. And because this is such a versatile dish, you can
choose from five different ways to prepare the rest of the
duck.
Yum yum, sounds appetising! How should we enjoy Beijing
Duck?
You can dip the crispy duck skin in fine, granulated sugar. Or
you can wrap the sliced meat in homemade wheat pancake
garnished with leek, cucumber and sweet sauce; or garlic
paste, sliced radish, Tianjin cabbage and sweet sauce.

Futsal is a scaled-down fooball

game that is played on a small
field or indoors.

Can you give us the recipe?

Well, Ill let you in on a few secrets but youll have to do the
dishes thereafter. First, we marinate and stuff the ducks with
vegetables and a blend of herbs and spices. The ducks are
then bathed in a mixture of water and malt sugar and left to
dry. Finally, the roasting is done with apple wood in our
custom-made wood-fired oven. It takes at least nine hours to
prepare and roast the duck, so it is recommended that you
pre-order the dish when making your reservation.
What other dishes would you recommend?
There are so many to choose from, but Ill recommend the
Chefs Appetiser Platter with wok-tossed lobster medallion,
crispy eel, pan-fried scallops, and Sichuan pepper chicken.
You should also try the Stewed Lobster with Eggplant and
Minced Chicken in Sichuan Chilli Sauce, Braised Wagyu Beef

A magnet for talent

Through the learning campus in one-north,

Margret Suckale, Member of the Board of
Executive Directors at BASF SE, is looking
forward to attract the regions talent to
fill the ranks, as well as to support
employees development especially in
core technical skills. We are
establishing the learning campus to
deliver on our goal to attract, retain
and develop excellent people. We
have set it up in Singapore to
strengthen the Learning Campus in
Asia Pacific, she added.
BASF has decided on Singapore as
the location for its learning campus in Asia
Pacific because of the nations deep focus
on global leadership and talent
development. As a key business hub in Asia
Pacific, Singapore is also able to connect
the learning experience with relevant
customer interaction and experience.
To provide an engaging learning
environment, the learning campus in
one-north is a regional learning facility
for talent development activities as well
as a hub for learning innovation.

Creating the right chemistry with

one-north
BASF has consolidated its global learning programmes into an
integrated learning platform. This will be made available to all
the BASF learning campuses around the world. The campus in
Singapore will be the first to benefit from the courses and
programmes under the new integrated learning platform.
The learning facility will focus on developing life-long
personal and professional skills for BASF employees.
The initial programmes offered will be centred on core
topics fundamental to regional development, such as the
New Leader Programme for grooming promising individual
contributors to become effective team leaders, and the
New Employee Programme to help new members integrate
quickly into BASFs culture and working environment. The
learning campus will also oversee the training of some 16,000
BASF employees across the Asia Pacific region on sustainable
development.
According to Hans-Christian Marxen, Senior Vice President for
Human Resources, employees in Asia Pacific are looking for
companies that can offer them attractive development
opportunities. BASFs new learning facility at one-north will be
one such asset to provide employees with the advantage of
individual development. Singapore, with its strong focus on
