Moorestown High School junior Quinn Nicolai of the varsity girls soccer team heads the ball in the Central Jersey Group 3 playoff game
against Ocean Township on Thursday, Nov. 5. The Quakers and Spartans were even in the first half, but the Quakers were ultimately

Science, Technology, Engineering and Math education as well as

robotics have exploded in South
Jersey over the past few years. In
Moorestown Township Public
Schools, STEM is highly valued,
and the robotics teams have
grown tremendously since their
start three years ago.
However, there are no official
robotics competitions being held
in South Jersey.
The Moorestown High School
FIRST Robotics Team, The Combustible Lemons, is taking action
by hosting a FIRST LEGO League
Scrimmage practice competition
on Saturday, Nov. 14. The event
will take place from 1 p.m. to 5
p.m. at William Allen Middle
School with a $1 entry fee. This is
a first for MHS, helping to raise
awareness of FIRST Robotics,
promote STEM education and

The Chris Christie effect

Even though he wasnt on ballot, the governor had an effect on election outcomes

Dan McDonough Jr.
chairman of elauwit media

hris Christie was not on the

General Election ballot last
Tuesday, but the effect he had
on the outcome of elections in New
Jersey was profound.
At least three state Assembly seats
switched hands from the Republicans
to the Democrats last week, with a
fourth pending official results. If all
four seats switch to the Democrats, it
will reduce the GOPs number of seats
to 28 out of 80, its lowest total in more
than 30 years.
Democrats Joann Downey and Eric
Houghtaling defeated their Republican
incumbent opponents Mary Pat Angelini and Caroline Casagrande in the
states 11th District in Monmouth
County, a district where Republicans
held both seats since 1992.
In the 1st District in South Jersey,
Republican Assemblyman Sam Fiocchi lost his seat. Democrats Bob Andrzejczak and his running mate Bruce

potential message it sends to Gov.
Christie? Share your thoughts on this,
and other topics, in a letter to the editor.

Land defeated Fiocchi and his running

mate Jim Sauro.
Voter turnout is expected to be low
official results havent been released
yet because of the lack of a prime
position to vote for, such as governor
or president. But those who did show
up to the polls sent a pretty clear message that they are unhappy with the
way things are going in the Assembly.
Many political pundits believe this
message was aimed directly at Christie
and the Republican Party, and its hard
to counter that argument.
Four years ago, Christie was riding
high as a potential Republican candidate against President Obama. Feel-

ings were good about Christie in New

Jersey and, as a result, about the Republican Party in general.
Today, after controversies such as
the George Washington Bridge debacle
and fight against pensions, the tides
have changed quite substantially.
While hes in the large GOP field
looking for the 2016 nomination,
Christies bubble has seemed to burst.
While the dust has not settled yet, his
onetime status as a rising star seems to
have faded, and his party is paying for
his blunders back home.
Last week, voters spoke out against
Christie and his party. In the next few
months, his party members will have a
chance to speak out against him again
in the Republican Primary, if he remains on the ballot, that is.
And then, assuming he doesnt come
out victorious, he will ride off into the
sunset as the Garden State will select a
new governor come 2017.

BOE seats filled by Weinstein, Pugh, Faunce

Moorestown Board of Education will see two returning, one newcomer
By BRIGIT BAUMA
The Sun
A total of 6,709 votes were cast for the
Moorestown Board of Education seats in
the general election on Tuesday, Nov. 3.
The results for the uncontested three
Moorestown Board of Education seats will
see incumbents David A. Weinstein and
Brandon
Pugh
returning
to
the
board along with newcomer J. Harry
Faunce.
Weinstein has been on the board since
2009, being named vice president at the beginning of this year, while Pugh has been

on the board since his election in 2012.

Faunce will be replacing board member
Sheryl Sawin, who did not run for re-election.
The unofficial election results came in
with Weinstein receiving 33.7 percent of
the votes, Pugh receiving 33.1 percent and
Faunce receiving 31.8 percent, with 1.4 percent personal choice.
In the race for Burlington County Board
of Chosen Freeholders, challengers Kate
Gibbs (R) and Ryan Peters (R) defeated incumbents Aimee Belgard (D) and Joanne
Schwartz (D). Gibbs received 25.8 percent
of the vote, and Peters received 25.7 per-

cent.
In the race for the 7th Legislative District of the NJ General Assembly, incumbents Herb Conaway (D) and Troy Singleton (D) won over challengers Bill Conley
(R) and Rob Prisco (R). Conaway received
about 31 percent of the vote, while Singleton received about 30 percent.

these young men have both.

Ian Millstein is working on the
interior of the center. Securing
donations of paint and repair materials, as well as the guidance
and assistance of a professional
painter, Millstein has been hard
at work in the center. The ceiling
and some area of the walls have
been spackled and repaired
where needed. Once the ceiling is
done, Millstein will clean the

walls and surfaces and paint the

walls. The project should take approximately two weeks and will
make the interior meeting rooms
fresh and clean.
Simultaneously, Jim Twomey
is tackling the landscaping outside of the center. Weeding and
pruning will just be the tip of the
spear with this project. New
plantings and a full beautification
plan is part of Twomeys project.
Developing a landscaping plan
that is sustainable and manageable is a large undertaking. He is
working with other scouts and
leaders to make the center welcoming and beautiful on the out-

side.
When not working on his individual project, each Eagle Scout
candidate has been assisting the
other. The two Eagle Scouts are
working together to complete the
renovation of this community facility which illustrates perfectly
the idea of collaboration that
makes this community successful. The Department of Parks
and Recreation thanks Millstein,
Twomey and Troop No. 44 for
their contributions to the
Moorestown community.
Be
sure to stop by the New Albany
Recreation Center to see the
progress.

YMCA Gobbler Giving event helps ease food

insecurity in Burlington, Camden counties

%

Hunger and food insecurity affect people in the U.S. of all ages.
According to Feeding America,
one in seven Americans more
than 46 million people rely on
food pantries and meal service
programs to feed themselves and
their families. The YMCA of
Burlington and Camden Counties
is giving back to those who need
it most through its annual Gobbler Giving event.
During the month of November, feathers will be available to
purchase for $1, $5, $10 or $20

Mt. Laurel YMCA or BurlingtonRiverfront YMCA. Feathers can

be decorated and will be used to

decorate turkeys on display at
each location.
Proceeds from the purchase of
feathers will go directly toward
providing holiday dinners for the
families of the Ys Womens Opportunity Center to ensure that
everyone can have a happy and
healthy holiday season.
The Women's Opportunity Center assists women who have lost
financial support due to separation, divorce, death or disability
of a spouse and is committed to
help women gain economic selfsufficiency through education,
job readiness, networking, out-

reach, referrals and emotional

support. The center also promotes awareness of women's
rights and issues through public
advocacy.
Donations can be made by purchasing a feather at the Mt. Laurel YMCA, located at 59 Centerton

Tremendous opportunity for single story living in this spacious L-shaped ranch in a gated community. *This is
NOT an age restricted community. Nearly 2,200 square feet and only two of its kind! This lovely home boasts a
private courtyard entrance, with a waterfall, a pond and an over-sized two car detached garage. There are hardwood floors in the great room as well as a beautiful gas fireplace complete with custom tile. The large eat-in
kitchen offers upgraded cabinetry, recessed lighting, custom backsplash, upgraded tile flooring and a sliding
glass door to the courtyard.

Exquisite LAKEFRONT executive home with incredibly private location within Norrsken Lake Estates. This custom home features 4 bedrooms, 3.5 baths and backs to the lake. The home welcomes you into a grand foyer
complete with marble flooring and a double staircase. The chef's kitchen offers cherry cabinetry, stainless steel
appliance, hardwood flooring, a large center island, electric cooktop and double oven. There s also a bar/butler

Lovingly maintained home with recent upgrades that include a newer three dimensional shingled roof as well
as two updated bathrooms both with new ceramic tile flooring. The spacious living room and kitchen offer

backyard complete with a freshly painted deck. A truly quaint home in a very desirable neighborhood.

This beautiful French provincial home was custom built and lovingly maintained by the original owner. With curb appeal galore the upgrades start with a stamped concrete walk-way, a brick front porch
and professional landscaping. Inside you will find a large formal living room, a formal dining room and a renovated kitchen offering oak cabinetry, custom backsplash and a spacious dining area. Step
down into the family room which offers an Andersen sliding glass door to a 30 x 30 stamped concrete patio in a huge park-like backyard. Upstairs are three spacious bedrooms including a master with a
large walk-in closet and the ability to expand. The home was originally built to have a roof deck off the master bedroom, they decided to just put in windows, but it would be an easy upgrade for a potential to buyer to add French doors and have a fantastic roof deck! The full bathroom on the second floor was upgraded to include granite counters, granite flooring and granite walls. There is also recessed
lighting in the bathroom. The air conditioning was replaced 5 years ago. The water heater is just 4 years old and the well was replaced 5 years ago. The windows on the front and sides of the home have
also been replaced. There is also an oversized one car attached garage as well as a full basement. This location is ideal since there are only 4 homes on Roseville Lane and it is not a through street.

raise money for The Combustible

The Combustible Lemons
would love for Moorestown people to come watch the scrimmage, said Kathie Jim, head of
the marking department of The
Combustible Lemons.
This will be a big win for
Moorestown if we can pull this
off. Anytime there is something
beneficial and hugely educational
that can benefit education and
learning within the district at no
cost, it is huge, said Toni
Farmer, marketing team mentor
and FLL coach.
FLL is a division of FIRST (For
Inspiration and Recognition of
PSA

Addiction Hotline
of New Jersey
(800) 238-2333

Science and Technology) that promotes STEM and robotics among

children in elementary and middle school from ages 9 to 14. In the
Moorestown area alone, there are
many FLL teams, 11 of which will
attend this scrimmage to test
their robots and practice their
presentations.
This scrimmage is the first of
its kind in South Jersey, as there
are no official FLL competitions
in the area. Most are held in
Delaware and Pennsylvania. The
reason for this is robotics is new
in the area; The Combustible
Lemons have only been in
Moorestown for three years.
However, FIRST Robotics has
exploded in the area.
Because of the lack of competitions
in
South
Jersey,
Moorestown decided to host an
unofficial scrimmage so the
teams can practice their presentations and run their robots before
the actual competition. The hope
is Moorestown will be recognized
by FIRST and may be one of the
schools to host an official competition in South Jersey.

FIRST Robotics and FLL, they

just kept having us go to
Delaware and Pennsylvania
every year. Rowan University is
going to be the center of the
South Jersey region and they are
looking closely at us. Theyre
watching our scrimmage here
and helping us train, and were
hoping that they will actually
allow us to be an official FLL
qualifier next year. It would be
huge for the school, Farmer
said.
Registration for the scrimmage
will start at 12:30 p.m. at WAMS.
Teams will present their projects
and also do robot missions, as
they would in a real competition.
This year, the FIRST FLL theme
is centered around trash and recycling. They come up with a
project that has something to do
with trash and recycling; and for
their mission, they will have to
accomplish different tasks centered around trash and recycling
using a robot they have created
made of LEGO pieces.
During the competition, there
will be a lot of fun things to do
while not competing. There are
music, raffles, concessions, refreshments and more for participants and visitors. One of the big
things that will be going on is the
FLL tradition of line dancing.
It is a rowdy, upbeat event. It
isnt what youd expect from a
bunch of smart kids into robots.
It looks like a party. It is loud
cheering like you would hear at a
sporting event, Farmer said.
Proceeds from the event will go
toward The Combustible Lemons.
STEM is the future, and that
is what this event is spreading.
We always say kids are the future,
and they are going to be our engineers and scientists who will
work to make our society better.
So it is definitely good to support
these kids and tell others about
it, Rebecca Rains said.
