Reed City is
decking the halls
for Evergreen
Festival
REED CITY The Reed City
Chamber of Commerce bills the
communitys annual Christmas
festivities as Christmas at the
Crossroads. And a full slate of
activities will await those who attend the festival this year.
On Friday, this year, the community will focus on shopping.
The emphasis is a nice way to
highlight businesses, Chastity
Eads, the director of the Reed City
Chamber of Commerce, said.
The whole shebang kicks off
Friday, Nov. 27, with the opening
of the Evergreen Festival Arts
and Crafts Show. The show will
begin at 9 a.m. and will run until
4 p.m. Friday. It will continue Saturday, Nov. 28, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
The show is held at the Reed City
High School. More than 125 vendors will be on hand for the show.
Call Reed City Community Education at (231) 832-5517 for craft show
information .
Also on Saturday will be the Evergreen Festival Parade. Parade
participants will begin lining up
near the intersection of Sears and
Franklin streets at 12:30 p.m. The
parade will travel east on Upton
Avenue and end at the Reed City
Depot. Eight winning parade entries will receive a cash prize. Categories include vehicles, walkers
and marchers, a childrens animal
category, an animal category for
adults, a business category, an
organization category and a category for bands.
After the parade stop, festival attendees can drop by the Reed City
Depot to visit Santa, Mrs. Claus,
the elves and reindeer. They may
also decorate a cookie and sip on
some hot cocoa.
Beginning at 7 p.m. on Nov. 28,
Pam Bowman and Jeff Gardner
will lead an old-fashioned Christmas Sing-a-Long at the Reed City
Crossroads Theatre.
The city always holds the event
the Friday and Saturday after
Thanksgiving.

Evarts Witbeck signs with Davenport track

By Andy Duffy
Weekly Voice

EVART Evart senior Allyssa Witbeck signed a letter of

intent with Davenport University Tuesday, Nov. 10, at Evart
High School.
She plans to participate on
the track and field team and
compete in the high jump and
pole vault while pursuing a major in sports management.
Besides participating in
track, Allyssa has played volleyball and basketball for Evart.
She was an all-conference pick
in the high jump and long jump
the last two years. She was
also a state competitor for the
100-meter relay. She was a Highland Conference team pick for
volleyball. She was the winner
of the girls high jump at last
years Cadillac News Track and
Field Meet.
Allyssa comes from an athletic family. Her father, Brock
Witbeck, played basketball and
football and ran track at Evart
High School. He once held the
Evart school pole vault record.
Her mother, Nicole (LaFountain) Witbeck, starred in cross
country at Reed City High
School.
Allyssa started getting serious about pole vaulting last
summer, but she hopes to compete in that event on the Evart
track team this spring.
Her former track coach, Ken
Willems, has fond memories of
her seasons on his team.
Allyssa was one of my jumpers and she did a great job, Willems said.
One of his memories of Allyssa relates to last years conference meet. The day of the meet
was windy, but Allyssa still
managed a long jump of about

While Davenport University track coach Jeremy Weir looks on, Allyssa signs her letter of intent to attend Davenport.
15 feet for a first-place finish.
She did well to win it, Willems said.
She took first in the high
jump with a jump of 5-feet
2-inches.
Besides her jumping prowess,
the former Evart coach valued
Allyssas ability as a runner
and her contribution to the relay team.
Allyssa participated occasionally in the pole vault last season
and quickly began jumping

nine and a half feet. Willems

said her participation in the
pole vault was a needed boost to
the team because Allyssa was
able to earn additional points
for the team.
Besides her athletic ability,
Willems appreciated Allyssas
leadership.
She was always a positive
member of team. She supported
teammates, and she knew what
her production should be. She
tried to do things for the team,

Willem said.
I coached her for two years
and saw a great amount of maturity in her.
Willems said he believes part
of the reason Davenport University recruited Allyssa is because it is trying to improve its
track and field program.
I think she will really be a
positive influence on developing the program there. She has
potential to be a very good pole
vaulter, he said.

Group wants children to be ready for learning and for life

By Andy Duffy
Weekly Voice

REED CITY Children in a two-county

area are getting a leg up partly because of
the Mecosta-Osceola Great Start Collaborative, program officials say.
The collaborative consists of a group of
health and human service organizations,
business people, faith-based child-care providers and business people.
Those working in the collaborative coordinate services and work to ensure children
have access to quality, early-childhood programs and services.
Personnel work to ensure children have
access to physical and child development
services and social and emotional health
services and to support families and offer
child care and early education opportunities.
The Mecosta and Osceola Intermediate
School Districts have a total of 400 Great
Start Readiness Preschool (GSRP) slots. The
funding comes from the state of Michigan,
Department of Education. The Reed City
and Big Rapids GSRP programs have a
joint Great Start Collaborative Preschool
Partnership enrollment process with the
Northeast Michigan Community Service
Agency (NEMCSA) Head Start. Head Start
is a federal funded program. The GSC also
works with the Great Start to Quality Western Resource Center to offer workshops for
Early Childhood professionals and parents.
The Great Start Collaborative brings community partners and parents together to
look for gaps in services and find ways to
improve the early childhood system. We
want children to be ready for early learning
and life, LouAnn Gregory of the collaborative said.
Those involved in the Great Start Collaborative say that early-childhood programs
offer a number of benefits to children. The
programs lead to better educational performance, reductions in those placed in special
education programs, increases in high
school and college graduation rates, reductions in juvenile delinquency and criminal
activity later in life and higher earnings by
both children and parents. Another fringebenefit for parents: When their children
have access to high-quality early childcare
and education programs, parents have
lower work absenteeism rates.

Parent Coalition
Great Start includes a parents coalition.
The parents coalition strives to publicize
knowledge and participation in early child-

Head Start
Head Start is another federally funded
preschool program that is offered at no cost
for families who qualify. Parents with children aged 3-5 or with children with special
needs are eligible to apply. Some Head Start
programs may also have some state funded

broadhead.
The grabber points
function is to help specifically when hunting
small game. If you aim,
but miss: the little arms
will keep the arrow
from burrowing into the
ground and getting lost
as easily.
If you aim, and hit
your mark: it allows the

tip to knockout your

bird (or squirrel) without passing all the way
through. Either way the
shaft is slowed down
just enough upon impact thanks to its spring
loaded arms.
If you noticed the lack
of a sharp arrow point,
youre right; the pushpin
shaped nose is not a safety cap to be removed. It
is the point itself. The
opposite end is screwed
into the arrow shaft.

The pushpin shape is designed to thump versus

pierce; at the speed of a
speeding arrow, it will
take down the target.
(Oh and going back
to the sad but all-toooften reality of missed
shots, it is worth noting
that more often than not
these broadheads are
designed to flip the arrow
shaft into an upward position making retrieval in tall grass, much,
much more likely.)

Encounters with wild

animals in the old days
By Shanna Avery
Special to the Weekly Voice

The pioneers who settled

this region when northern
Michigan was an expanse
of dense forest lived on
guard of the untamed wilderness around them.
The following account
explores numerous encounters with such animals as bears, wolves, wild
cats and other species as
narrated on the pages of
old local newspapers.
On July 24, 1873, the Lake
County Star reported,
Franky Knapp, a small
boy, was passing through
the woods when he saw a
bear cub up a tree. Franky
made up his mind he
would catch the cub and
so started up the tree, but
he had not proceeded far
before hearing a noise and
looking around he saw the
old bear approaching. He
did not stop to question the
animals title to the cub
but slipping to the ground
had just time to make his
escape before she reached
the tree.
Another story in the
Star reported a predicament at school district No.
2 in Ellsworth Township,
taught by Miss Ada J. Randall, She has 19 scholars
enrolled, but a hunter
killed a very large bear in
that district last week and
there is much excitement
about sending the children
through the woods in consequence of which, there
were but three pupils present. There is more fear of
the bear since his death
than there was during his
natural life time. July 24,
1873
The Big Rapids Current
reported, C. H. Clement
encountered a black bear
last Monday, just at evening, a few rods south of
the depot. The distance between them was a safe one
for Cliff, but for a fact, he
says his hair sorter ris a
little. Bruin struck out for
the swamp as soon as he
saw Cliff. January 15, 1882
The Star keyed in on
the size of one of these
bears, J. W. Goodar shot
and killed a monster bear
in township 19 range 12
in this county. The bear
would measure eight feet
from the extreme point
of its nose to point of
its haunches, and would
weigh after it was dressed
about 400 pounds. December 9, 1875

The December 2, 1880

issue of the Star reported,
A party of Wauseon, Ohio
hunters recently killed a
good sized lynx over in the
vicinity of Star Lake.
There were a number
of encounters involving
wolves, Benjamin Barrett, clerk of Cherry Valley
township, gave us a call
Monday. He spoke of the
wolves as having become
quite troublesome in the
neighborhood where he resides. The wolves are making havoc in Cherry Valley
township having killed two
sheep for Sylvestor Cork,
and crippled two calves
for C. A. Swain. They were
also prowling about the
premises of James Avery,
but were frightened away.
Andrew Craig lost a calf
we believe also. Lake
County Star: August 15,
1878
In Dover Township,
northeast Lake County, J.
H. Sutton had seven sheep
killed by wolves in the fall
of 1878.
The December 16, 1880
issue of the Manistee Standard disclosed one mans
close call with wolves,
James Johnson, a hunter
from the south part of
the state, had a narrow
escape from the wolves
near Springdale Township, recently. One night
last week he was chased
toward his camp by three
ferocious wolves. It was
in a blinding snow storm
and pitch dark. He had
but one charge in his rifle.
The wolves were almost
onto him when, very in
despair, he fired at random
and joined the camp. The
next morning he found
the remains of a monster
wolf with a hole between
the eyes. It was a she-wolf
and measured seven feet
from tip to tip. That lucky
shot undoubtedly saved the
hunters life.
The March 1, 1882 issue
of the Big Rapids Current
told of another frightening
adventure reprinted from
the Ogemaw Herald, A
pack of 15 wolves followed
a supply team from Beaver
Lake Station, recently, to
within 1.2 miles of the
camp on the Au Sable, a
few miles below St. Helens.
The driver kept them off
by vigorously swinging a
lantern. They are reported
plenty in that section.
The July 17, 1879 issue
of the Star told, A plucky
adventure. We learn from

Frederick Baker of Eden

township that a few days
since, as Edgar Foss and
Eddie Scott aged 8 and 9
years respectively were
returning home from
a neighbors in Glencoe
township when they encountered a wolf and procuring clubs they attacked
the animal and succeeded
in killing it. Those boys are
apparently of the right grit
for the back woods.
Wolves were so numerous that a bounty of $12
was set on every wolf
slaughtered, according to
the October 16, 1879 issue
of the Lake County Star.
The article continued,
On or about the 24th
day of September, 1879,
Henry Stowe came before
me and presented a full
grown wolf s scalp, with
ears entire thereon, for the
purpose of obtaining the
bounty prescribed by law.
Poisonous snakes were
also something that settlers were cautious of, We
are pleased to learn that
the little son of C. H. Forman who was bitten on
the hand by a rattle snake
a few days since, while
fishing at Twin Lakes, has
nearly or quite recovered
from the terrible poison.
Lake County Star: October
7, 1880
The July 30, 1874 issue
of the Star reported, Mr.
G. Hibner, while hunting
a marsh near the railroad
a mile and a half east of
town [Baldwin] last Tuesday, killed a full grown
messenger. It measured
about two feet and a half
in length and was the possessor of eight rattles.
With the countless number of wild animals prowling about, some tried their
hands at domesticating
the same. In Chase, That
pet bear of Kelloggs created no little excitement
last week by breaking his
chain and escaping. He
was speedily recaptured
however and returned to
his old quarters. Lake
County Star: October 23,
1873
The Manistee Standard
reported, A monster
bear was exhibited on our
streets Thursday by two
men, who wrestled, shook
hands with, and kissed the
bear for the amusement

New shows added

Cast members Melissa Langworthy (seated) and Lisa Beilfuss rehearse a scene from the Crossroads Theatre
Guilds upcoming fall production, Exit the Body. The duo star in this family-friendly mystery as mystery writer
Crane Hammond and her secretary, Kate Bixley.
The Crossroads Theatre production crew added two extra Exit the Body shows. Crossroads Theatre officials
added the additional shows because the last scheduled show was sold out and people were turned away.
Nicole Hamner-Weiss, who plays the part of Helen OToole in the play, said, This is exciting news for the growth
of arts in Osceola County,
The added shows will be held Saturday, Nov. 21. There will be a matinee performance at 2 p.m. and an evening
show Saturday at 7.
Tickets are $10.

Evart officials may revamp

By Andy Duffy
Weekly Voice

EVART City officials

in Evart are considering
the adoption of a new
budget process. Instead
of preparing a budget
each year for the following year, they may begin
a three-year budget process.
Officials see some
potential bumps ahead.
Moving from a one-year
budget to a multi-year
budget will be difficult at
first and the process will
not be smooth simply because its a different way
of thinking, the citys

the Salvation Armys
Angel Tree program Nov.

The Big Rapids Corps
of the army serves that
four-county area. Parents
should call the office before going to the office to
register for the program.
The number to call is 231796-5597.
Angel Tree is part of a
toy-distribution program
that helps families provide gifts for their children. Because of the program, parents dont need
to choose whether to buy
gifts or to pay the light
bill. It takes a burden off
parents, Chris Vallette of
the Salvation Army said.
Angel Tree served about
600 children last year. This
year, officials anticipate
serving about 1,000.
Two factors account for
the increased anticipated
demand, Vallette said.
First, the economy hasnt
rebounded as many hoped

cek, said.
Dvoracek believes the
benefits can outweigh the
costs, however.
Among the advantages:
A multi-year budget will
force city officials to look
into the future and decide
on long-term goals and
strategies. The budget
process would also make
city personnel work as
a team to create budget
strategies and decide
what projects are most
important.
Another advantage:
Instead of the creation

of a hands-on process by

helps to hinder any lastminute discovery of a
financial crisis.
A three-year budget
will allow the city to be
proactive instead of reactive in many situations,
Dvoracek said.
Dvoracek doesnt know
of any other area governmental bodies that are
using a multi-year budget
process.
Reed City officials said
that although they dont
have a formal three-year
budget, they always do

Common emergencies

Non-emergency projects,

used for roof repairs, new

Interest does not accrue
