About IAStructE
The Indian Association of Structural Engineers (IAStructE) is a professional body with pan
Indian membership of prominent structural engineers. IAStructE has a Memorandum of
Understanding with Institution of Structural Engineers (IStructE), UK for mutual cooperation
and professional advancement. IAStructE is also a constituent member of the Engineering
Council of India (ECI). The Association has the prime responsibility, on the one hand to
enhance the knowledge base and professionalism amongst the engineers, while on the other, to
look after their professional and business interests. IAStructE promotes Initial Professional
Development (IPD) and Continuing Professional Development (CPD) courses for members,
young and like-minded civil and structural engineers.
IAStructE has been organizing Seminars/Workshops and monthly lectures regularly on different
topic of interest to engineers and the society at large.
IAStructEs headquarters is located in Delhi and it has State Centres in Ahmedabad, Bengaluru,
Hyderabad, Chennai, Kolkata, Mumbai, Noida, and Visakhapatnam.

SEMINAR THEME
Who is not aware of Earthquakes, their frequent occurrence and damages they cause to people
and property. The Indian subcontinent has a history of many earthquakes some of them were
severe. We all recall the damages to coastal region occurred by Tsunami accentuated by an
earthquake in Sumatra in 2004, the Bhuj earthquake (2001), the Chamoli earthquake (1999), the
Uttarakashi (1991) and the Latur earthquakes (1993), the Assam (1950) & Bihar (1934)
earthquakes and the recent one (May 2015) that occurred in Nepal affecting India as well.
Historically, humanity can not forget the devastating earthquakes in Chilie, China, Indonesia,
Japan, Pakistan, Russia and many other counties.
We have recently been warned that if an earthquake measuring anywhere close to 7.5 to 8.0 on
the Richter scale hits India, around 60% of the buildings would face risk of collapse. Built
structures need to be safe during such earthquakes thus protecting people from risks.
Engineers ensure that structures and buildings are designed to be earthquake resistant. In Japan
and other earthquake prone countries, design guidelines and techniques exist are strictly adhered
to for earthquake-resistant design. In India, the National Disaster Management Authority and the
Bureau of Indian Standard (BIS) has been focusing on earthquake resistant design and the
relevant codes of practices. We IAStructE in the past had organized similar seminars to
deliberate on the design of Seismic Resistant Structures.
In this proposed Seminar we will take stock of the state of affairs in regard to safety aspects
(against Earthquakes) talking about what latest solutions and techniques are there in design and
implementation of future structures, retrofitting existing structures and the cost aspects for the
built-in safety aspects.
