Cathy, 22 years old.

Money affects everything that we do. If you
dont have it, it causes stress. If you have it,
you just want more. To eat, to live, to dress,
even to brush your teeth it all costs money.
Personally, I dont see the point in
saving money. Money is there to be spent and
it doesnt help you live your life sitting away in
a bank. As soon as I get paid from my job, I go

straight to the shops. And I dont stop
shopping until a day before my next pay
cheque. I dont worry about spending money
because I know that every month I will get
more of it. Its just one continuous cycle.
What do I spend my money on? Just
the basics really; clothes, food, things for my
house. Sometimes Ill splash out on a holiday,
but you usually have to save money for a
holiday and thats something I just cant do.

b a sensible way to spend money

c a waste of savings

David, 29 years old.

My parents taught me from a very young age
to be sensible with my money. I have had a
savings account since I was 16, and I now
have a large amount of money in the bank just
waiting to be used. The problem is that I am
too afraid to actually use my savings. I dont
know when I will have the chance to save the
money again, so I feel scared to dip into it.
Im am not a big spender anyway. A lot
of the things that I like doing, like bike-riding,
hiking and running, are all free to do. I dont
need a lot of money to keep myself amused. I
live a perfectly happy life without having to
spend on expensive clothes or fancy holidays
that cost the earth.
The big thing that I am saving for is to
buy a house. Most of my savings will be used
to put down a deposit. Buying a house is a
good investment because my money will be
going into something that can be resold. In a
way, its just another way of saving money.

a go on holiday
b buy new clothes
c buy a new house
d donate to charity
e buy medicine
f save
g build a school
h buy a sports car
i go to luxury restaurant
