Abstract

The main objectives of this experiment is to identify 6 unknown organic(a.c,di,j,k)

compounds by using the FTIR and UV-Vis analysis. It is also conducted in order to
provide student an oppurtinity to implement the knowledge from the first two
chapters of the analytical chemistry for enginers course. Compund b,e f g, h , j, l is
already geven the data of the u-vis spectra and ir. All together there are 12
compund (A-L) need to be identified by using knowledge of uvvis and ir
spectroscopy. Each of the compound has different value of frequency range

Coclusion
The main objectives of this experiment is to identify 6 unknown organic(a.c,di,j,k)
compounds by using the FTIR and UV-Vis analysis. It is also conducted in order to
provide student an oppurtinity to implement the knowledge from the first two
chapters of the analytical chemistry for enginers course. Compund b,e f g, h , j, l is
already geven the data of the u-vis spectra and ir. All together there are 12
compund (A-L) need to be identified by using knowledge of uvvis and ir
spectroscopy. In this experiment, the organic compound is analyses based on the
peak appeared on both ir spectroscopy and uv-vis spectra.
The function of the ir spectroscopy is to identified the absence of functional group
of the compound. The functional group is determind by analyse the peak of the
spectra appeared. It is known that uvvis can only detected compound that
containing chroopores with at least contain one double bond. So, based on the data
analyse from the xperiment the functional group of all the six organic compounds
is successfully determined while the name of the compound is determined by
using the chemical reaction given before the experiment is conducted. The
functional group and name of the compound are
compound a is an alcohol (ethanol) , compound c is carboxylic acid (ethanoic
acid), compound D is an ester (ethyl ethanoate),
compound I is an aromatic carboxylic acid (benzoic acid), compound J is an alkyl
halide (ethyl
bromide), and compound K is an ether (diethyl ether). The other six compound are
compound b is aldehyde..
from the experiment compound a and l cannot be identified by uv-vis because of
the absence of double bond. The result obtained from this eperimnt is in a good

agreement with the information found in the literature although there are maybe
slightly different due the unexpected error happened during the experimrnt is
conducted. The error is maybe due the handling of the equipment that may affect
the sensitivity of the equipment. Besides the minor error in the
results, this experiment has been a success fully conducted.

Recommendation
There are several recommendations that need to be considered in this
exxpriment in order to obtained more accurate result. First, during the
handling of the cuvette, it is necessary to hold it on the rough sides to
avoid any fingerprint. This is because on the smooth sides is where the
beam is passes through to interpret the data. So, before the cuvette is
placed in the cuvette holder, students need to wipe cleanly the outer
surface of the cuvette with tissue to make sure that there is no fingerprint
or any other impurities that might affect the experiment. The other
recommendation is
