CHRISTMAS IN RICHFIELD
PHOTOS BY THOMAS J. MCKILLEN

Christmas in Richfield was held Dec. 5 and featured events at Friess Lake School and the
Richfield Historical Park. The village tree lighting was held at Heritage Park later in the day.
During a holiday bazaar at Friess Lake School, Baron West (left photo) and a choir from

Where to Turn When

Your Home Doesnt Sell
If your home has just come off the
market and hasnt sold, dont be
discouraged. The reason your
home did not sell may have nothing
to do with your home or the market.
In reality, your home may have
been one of the more desirable
properties for sale.
So Why didnt Your Home Sell?
Last year almost half of the
homes listed for sale never sold at
all, and many sellers found that
there was a tremendous amount a
homeowner needed to be educated
on to sell their home for top dollar
in the shortest time period.
Dont risk making the wrong

choices and losing both time and

money on your investment. Before
you hire a realtor, know the right
questions to ask to save you time
and money.
Industry experts have prepared a
free special report called How to
Sell a House that Didnt Sell which
educates you on the issues involved.
To hear a brief pre-recorded
message about how to order your

the next time you list it for sale.

10 Questions to Ask Before

You Hire a Real Estate Agent
Whether You Decide to Sell or Buy a Home on Your Own, or Hire a
Real Estate Professional to handle It For You, There are Certain Key
Facts That Can Literally Save or Cost You Thousands of Dollars
Not all real estate agents are
the same. If you decide to seek the
help of an agent when selling or
buying your home, you need some
good information before you make
any moves.
Picking the right agent is one
of those critical issues that can
cost or save you thousands of
dollars. In this FREE special
report, we give you the specific
questions you should be asking to
ensure that you get the best

representation for your needs.

Before you hire any real estate
agent, call and get a copy of a FREE
Report entitled 10 Questions to
Ask Before You Hire an Agent.

24th Year

eptember 1st ushered in the 24th

Anniversary of Friends of Nature.
We have seen many changes over the
years. We grew from 1,000 sq. feet to
our current 12,000 sq. feet. We endured
a major remodeling of the entire shopping
center in 2011 and now we are battling
the reconstruction of the intersection of
Main Street and Pilgrim Road. There is a
light at the end of the tunnel. Within the
next few days the roads and mall
entrances will all be open making it convenient to shop at Friends of Nature.
The past few years have seen major
changes in the Dog and Cat Food industry with acquisitions and mergers of some
major popular brands to other large Pet
Food manufacturers and distributors. This
has resulted in us having access to exciting new products previously unavailable
and now being added weekly.
Pet parents want the very best food for

their pets and Friends of Nature prides

itself on having a large selection of holistic dog and cat foods that include limited
ingredient, grain free, and freeze dried
foods.
Friends of Nature has the largest selection of Raw Frozen Dog and Cat food in
Menomonee Falls and the surrounding
communities. Stop in and see our wall of
freezers filled to the brim with all the
major brands of food and bones including
Stella and Chewys, Tuckers and Fresh is
Best which are all made in Wisconsin.
There are many really great foods and
we try to have most of them but if there is
a food we dont carry just tell us and we
can special order it for you and then have
it within a few days. There is really no
one best food so our staff is trained to
help you make a decision based on the
nutritional needs and life style of your pet.

The Germantown Historical Society

would like to say thank you to the
sponsors of the 2015 Oktoberfest for
helping us put together another
successful year

From the better late than never column. I would like to share my sincere gratitude to everyone involved in this
21st Hunsrucker Oktoberfest at Dheinsville Park. I am proud to announce that this year was one of the most successful
to date! Our attendance was up, sales were up, and the weather was awesome.
I cannot say enough about the volunteers, along with our members,we had a ton of kids from the high school helping before, during,
and after the event. Thank you all for being there and we hope to see you in 2016. Once again, a portion of the village tourism fund was donated.
We were also happy that Sendik's stepped up and once again became our presenting level sponsor. Along with these, many area businesses donated
not only money, but time and energy to help us succeed. I really think most business owners realize that having a group hold an event of this size,
anywhere in the village, is a good thing for the whole village. And we plan on doing what we have been doing for many years to come.
Please mark your calendars for September 24 and 25, 2016! "Oktoberfest is in September". That's a fact you must remember.
Jeff Dhein, Oktoberfest Chairman

Germantowns traditional breakfast with Santa

Twas early on a Sunday morning in
the little Village of Germantown that all
the children woke up to the clatter of
reindeer hooves as Mr and Mrs Santa
Claus arrived for the Germantown
Kiwanis sponsored Breakfast With
Santa. It is a tradition here in
Germantown, Wisconsin for families to
come to the Kiwanis event to enjoy a
wonderful All-You-Can-Eat pancake
breakfast, and spend time with Santa
and Mrs.Claus. Moms and Dads bring
their cameras to capture those treasured photos as their children enjoy
their magical moment with Santa.
Breakfast With Santa, sponsored by
the Germantown Kiwanis Club, is a
chance for Germantown familes to get
into the holiday spirit with an All-YouCan-Eat Pancake breakfast and all the
trimmings, plus a photo with Santa and
Mrs. Claus. Once again this year Santa
will bring his reindeer. Thats right, real
reindeer. There will be photo opportunities with the reindeer as well. The
event will be held Sunday, December
20, 2015 from 8 AM until Noon at the
Florian Park Convention Center,
N111W18611
Mequon
Road
in
Germantown.
Germantown Moms and Dads are
encouraged to bring their cameras for
Christmas photos with Santa, Mrs.
Claus and their reindeer. The full breakfast meal includes pancakes, eggs,
sausages and all the fixings. The
Kiwanis Pancake Breakfast has become
a Germantown family tradition. The
MacArthur School 4th and 5th Grade
choir will lead the hall in Christmas carols. The Germantown High School choir
will also perform. Children may view
Christmas movies in Santas Workshop.
With all of the stress of the holidays
upon us, this is one event that is meant
to take the pressure off Mom for a day
and allow each family to get those
treasured family photos for Christmas.
It will be a memorable experience for
every child in Germantown.

Asked if the event is a fund raiser

for Kiwanis, Germantown Kiwanis
President Dwayne Ketterer smiled and
said, We wouldnt be doing it just to
raise money. We plan the event hoping
to break even on the cost. He added,
This is an event put on for our community. We do it for the smiles it brings
to the children just to see the looks
on their faces when they get to talk
with Santa and Mrs. Claus. Thats priceless.
Germantown Kiwanis is a volunteer
organization under the charter of the
Kiwanis International. It is comprised
of local residents, businesses and members of civic organizations and schools
who seek to promote projects to benefit the children of our community.
Breakfast With Santa tickets may be
purchased for $12.00 apiece at the
door. Ages 2-10 are $10.00, under 2 are
free. Save $2.00 per ticket by buying
them in advance from a Kiwanis member or by purchasing them at Aldos
Pizza & Pub on Pilgrim Road, and the
First Bank Financial Centre on Mequon
Road.
Breakfast With Santa is supported
by
the
Deutschtadt
Heritage
Foundation, SERVPRO of Milwaukee
North and SERVPRO of NE Waukesha
County, A&B Contractors, LLC, Dental
Professionals, and the Village of
Germantown Tourism and Betterment
Fund.

Fair Park officials unveil plans for new amphitheater

West Bend Mutual
donates $600,000 for
construction of new stage
BY THOMAS J.MCKILLEN
MANAGING EDITOR

Representatives
from
the
Washington County Fair Park and West
Bend Mutual Insurance Company
offered more details Dec. 8 on plans for
a permanent amphitheater stage at the
fair park grounds.
A day earlier the Washington County
Board approved a $600,000 donation
from West Bend Mutual Insurance for
construction of a new amphitheater
stage. The new stage will replace the
current stage, which was constructed in
1999, and will be 50x100 feet. The
amphitheater will be covered for the
entertainers.
The area for reserved seating will
have space for 1,500 while the rest of
the hill will still be available for other
seating.
The county board allocated up to
$85,000 in county funds for architectural services and preliminary site work.
The amphitheater will be named the
Silver Lining Amphitheater. Later during the news conference, County
Administrator Joshua Schoemann said
tormwater improvements will be
addressed as part of the new stage.
Plans call for the existing stage
being removed. Schoemann said the
designs will be created within the next
several weeks, and the county is hoping

to put bids out for the

project in January or
February.
During the news
conference, Chris Zwygart, vice president and
chief risk officer at

said the company "is

BOYS BASKETBALL

Germantown wins first four games

BY THOMAS J.MCKILLEN
MANAGING EDITOR

The Germantown boys basketball team jumped

out to a 13-point halftime lead on the way to a 9167 nonconference win over Milwaukee Hamilton
Dec. 8. Juwan McCloud led Germantown with 26
points while Max Keefe added 17 points. Keontae
White led Milwaukee Hamilton with 25 points.
On Dec. 5, Germantown topped Kenosha Indian
Trail, 92-56. The teams were tied 10-10 after a three
point basket by Indian Trail at the 12:34 mark of the
first half, but a layup by McCloud at the other end
of the court started a 15-point run for Germantown.
After a basket by Indian Trail's Josh Washburn at the
8:03 mark, Germantown scored the next 10 points
and held a 35-12 lead following a three-point basket
by McCloud at the 6:05 mark of the first half.
Germantown held a lead above 20 points for the
entire second half.
McCloud led Germantown with 23 points while
Keefe added 18 points.
Afterward, Germantown Coach Mark Adams noted
that Germantown had a size advantage inside over
Indian Trail.
"Similar to our game last night with Nicolet,
that's what helped us become successful on offense,
was to be able to get ball inside, and we wanted to

do that tonight," Adams said. "We've told guys

that when that happens, people on the perimeter get open then too after that. But we've got
to get inside touches first, and we did that
tonight."
The game against Indian Trail was the third
in a week. Adams said the team practiced hard
but the practices weren't as long due to several
upcoming games.
"We were pretty fresh tonight, so that's a
good thing," Adams said.
The Indian Trail game followed a 88-77
North Shore Conference win over Nicolet the
previous evening. McCloud led Germantown
with 22 points while Keefe and Conner
Edmonds scored 21 points each.
After the first week of the season, Adams
said time was spent in practice becoming better
defensively. He noted that the team played
man-to-man defense throughout the Indian
Trail game.
"We got stops and had them take shots and
limited them to one shot because we were pretty focused on what we were supposed to be
doing. From that standpoint, we improved on
defense. But we still have a long way to go,"
Adams said.

Germantown rallies to top Hamilton

The Germantown girls basketball

team changed the pace late in second
half against Hamilton Dec. 8, going on
an 11-2 run on the way to a 63-58 nonconference win over the Chargers.
Germantown took control in the
first half, as a basket by Piper Brown
gave Germantown a 21-12 lead with less
than eight minutes before halftime.
But Hamilton cut in to the lead and a
layup by Taylor Klug tied the score at
28-28. Brown finished the scoring for
the first half with two free throws with
38 seconds remaining.
Hamilton had the advantage during
the early part of the second half, as a

Fierst two minutes later prompted a
Germantown time out. The Warhawks
then cut into the Hamilton lead, as a
layup by Kenzie Schmitz made the score
50-49 in favor of Hamilton. A threepoint basket by Chloe Bingenheimer at
the 6:41 mark was then followed by a
basket Megan Ische, who converted a
layup at the 6:03 mark after a teammate stole the ball on Hamilton's end of
the court. Those points were part of an
11-2 run that gave Germantown a 61-62
lead with 3:01 remaining.
Hamilton cut the lead to 61-57 following a free throw by Macy Williams
with 35 seconds remaining, but could
not get any closer.
Afterward, Germantown Coach Matt
Stuve noted his team had easier games
within the previous week.
"It took them awhile to realize you
still want to attack and get after them,"
Stuve said. (Hamilton's) guards are as
good as you're going to see athletically

Bud Walsh is retiring.

After 49 years in the jewelry business, it is time to turn the keys over to a new generation.
Bud has been active in the community for all these
years, and has come to know so many of you by name.
From class rings to engagement rings and so many milestones in local families, Bud has enjoyed the privilege of
being a part of so many of these events through the generations.
Shawn Walsh, Bud's eldest son has worked by his side
in the jewelry business, watching the trends and industry
change. During all that time their dedication to serving the
community has not changed. Whether helping a client
choose the right gift, or creating something entirely custom, Bud's commitment to value has never wavered. Bud
has been active in Rotary and has been recognized nationally as an Outstanding Young Man in Business.
"Although I have enjoyed these years working in a
career I love, it is time for me to take a step in a new direction. As I enter my fiftieth year in the jewelry business, It's
time for me to spend more time with my wife Mary Pat.
We look forward to doing some traveling and spending
more time with our grandchildren and great-grandchildren. But don't be surprised to see me in the store from
time to time, because my heart is still in the business that
has been so much a part of me for all these years."
"In celebration of my retirement we will be offering
large discounts on all in-stock merchandise. We have
many beautiful pieces of jewelry on-hand for yourself or
that special someone in your life."

GODS GREATEST GIFT TO WORLD COMES

WRAPPED ESPECIALLY FOR YOU
BethlehemBy Luke and John. For unto YOU is born this day in the city of David
a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord. And this shall be a sign unto YOU: YOU shall
find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger. Luke 2:11,12
In this was manifested the love of God toward us, because that God sent his only
begotten Son into the world, that we migth live through him. Here is love, not that
we loved God, but that he loved us, and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our
sins. 1John 4:9,10
And we have seen and do testify that the Father sent the Son to be the Savior of the
world. Whosoever shall confess that Jesus is the Son of God, God dwelleth in him,
and he in God. And we have known and believed the love that God hath to us. God
is love; and he that dwelleth in love dwelleth in God, and God in him. 1John 4:14-16

Bill would allow specialized

plates for MACC Fund
Wisconsin motorists would be able
to purchase a specialized license plate
that would help benefit the Midwest
Athletes Against Childhood Cancer
(MACC) Fund under a bill that has
been introduced by Rep. Janel
Brandtjen (R-Menomonee Falls) and
Duey Strobel (R-Cedarburg).
Assembly Bill 401 would allow a
person interested in supporting the
MACC Fund to purchase a plate for the
regular vehicle registration fee along
with a $15 fee for the special plates
and a $25 payment that would go
toward the MACC Fund.
The bill was unveiled during a news
conference at Children's Hospital in
Wauwatosa Dec. 7. John McGlocklin,
president and co-founder of the MACC
Fund. McGlocklin noted the fund was
founded by he and then-Milwaukee
Bucks announcer Eddie Doucette 39
years ago. In the first year of the
fund, $35,000 was raised and the cure
rates for childhood cancer were 20 percent. The fund has now raised $55
million, while cure rates are now
around 80 percent, McGlocklin said.
Brandtjen explained that she was
asked about proposing such a bill after
Menomonee Falls residents Mattnew
and Tricia Verhaalen created the
"Childhood Cancer" license plate to
benefit the MACC Fund. The Verhaalens
lost their daughter Alison to childhood
cancer.
"Creating this legacy, hope for others, is a tremendous tribute to their
entire family," Brandtjen said.
The Verhaalens were at the news
conference with their son Tyler.
Matthew Verhaalen said their daughter
Alison was diagnosed with DIPG in
April 2014, which has no cure. He said

the months after the diagnosis

involved medical treatment while she
was treated at the MACC Fund Center.
Their daughter died approximately a
year ago at age 10.
"She just showed us what it means
to live every day," Tricia Verhaalen
said. "She was a girl of such complete
strength, bravery, and courage and we
definitely feel honored that we got to
be her parents."
He said the proposed license plate
is "raising awareness of childhood cancer and funding for the MACC Fund
Center at Children's Hospital of
Wisconsin."
Brandtjen said she is hoping to
have the bill approved during the current legislative section. Strobel added
there is a requirement a minimum of
1,600 plates have to be sold for money
to flow to the MACC Fund.
Afterward, Matt Verhaalen said the
idea for the license plate came after
they went to New York City with their
daughter and heard the idea for the
license plate from a person who organized that trip who said there was a
similar plate in Virginia.
"I decided as a pay it forward
moment to do a plate here in
Wisconsin, we did not have one," Matt
Verhaalen said.
The plate is designed by graphic
artist Sandy Ploy and includes a handprint from Alison Verhaalen. Ploy said
she had been working on materials to
help with Alison's memory, and she
had the art for her hand and writing.
"I thought how great would it be to
integrate it into her license plate,"
Ploy said.
