From the Director of Liturgy

Del Director de Liturgia
Gaudete!
A few weeks ago we started a new liturgical year
and now we are in the midst of Advent. However,
culturally, we have skipped this beautiful anticipation
of the coming of Christ and have already reached
Christmas. Let us remember that Advent is a season
of preparation. Yet, for what are we preparing?
Over the Thanksgiving weekend, I visited the
parish I grew up in, but I felt like an outcast. This
unwelcoming feeling that came over me was then
turned into a sudden realization that this is normal for
anybody at any parish. What therefore, does parish
mean? The word comes from the Greek word
paroikos, which literally means, an alien, a stranger in
a foreign place, a pariah. I was, by all intents and
purposes, a pariah in a familiar place.
We are all exiles on earth. Being a parishioner of
a certain parish is, liturgically speaking, the Advent
way of seeking Christ all year round. When we say, I
am a member of this or that parish, we may think we
are saying we belong, but in reality what we are saying
is, I am an outcast. Parish is there to remind the
faithful that our home is not here. Rather we go to our
parish to find a foretaste of our true home. Tt is there,
through the liturgy, that we find this heavenly home.
This week the first reading from the Prophet
Zephaniah is reminding us that, the King of Israel,
the Lord, is in your midst The response for the
Responsorial Psalm is even repeating to us that the
Holy One of Israel is among us. This theme is
constantly recurring. Yet, should we fear? Paul tells
us, No. Instead he says, Rejoice!... The Lord is
near.
The essential nature of Advent is to prepare us for
the Coming of the Lord, but it is not the preparation of
his first coming but his second, the one in which we
hope to rejoice with him in heaven.

Gaudete!
recurre. Aun deberamos de temer? Pablo nos dice:
No. En cambio, dice, Regocjate!...El Seor est
cerca.

Peace,

Paz,
Efrain

DISCOVER HOW GOD

IS CALLING YOU
Cardinal George created The Quigley Scholars Program in 2007 to support young men in the Archdiocese
of Chicago who want to learn more about the priesthood.
The program is open to teens in both public and
Catholic high schools (at any level) as well as those who
are homeschooled.
The Scholars attend a formational meeting once a
month at Mundelein Seminary from September through
April. We pray together, attend Mass, have dinner and
attend a faith sharing session with the seminarians.
Scholars who attend Catholic high schools in the
Archdiocese may also apply for a $2,500 scholarship to
help offset the cost of high school tuition.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION

This week, our celebration of Advent makes a
transition in ritual and texts. Beginning December 18,
the countdown of nine days (a novena) to Christmas sees
a heightened sense of expectation, and also a turning
from the call of the Baptist in the wilderness to the
events leading up to Jesus birth. In ancient Spain,
December 18 was once celebrated as the Feast of the
Expectancy, and customs grew up to heighten readiness
in the homes.
Some customs arise from monastic life and practice
and spill over into our parish life. Beginning tonight,
those who pray Vespers will sing in the opening phrase a
beautiful title of Christ. These titles belong to a
collection of opening phrases called the O Antiphons
after the awe-inspired O sung on the first note. Theres
a playful code in the titles: O Wisdom, O Lord, O
Flower of Jesse, O Key of David, O Dawn, O Ruler, O
Emmanuel. When you take their Latin names
Sapientia, Adonai, Radix, and so onthe titles form an
acrostic when you read them backwards: ERO CRAS.
In Latin, that is translated as I will be there tomorrow!
Its as if Christ were answering the prayers of the
waiting people in the words of the prayers themselves.
Rev. James Field, Copyright J. S. Paluch Co.

y algunos ms.
juzgar a vivos y muertos.
