ministerial team, educating and forming our children and
youth in the faith. I thank Dianne for her faith and

Confirmed here in 5th grade, I remember the
Bishops message to be involved in your Church. I
wondered, how does a 5th grader do
that? As I got older, my involvement in
the church led me to my experience as
Director of Religious Education. This
has been a journey in my faith and an
understanding of the Bishops message.
Thirty years ago, with a program of
250, little did I realize it would grow to
a program of over 900. Our catechists
went from 20 to presently 90 with 20
catechists being in the program between
8 and 25 years. They taught me
dedication. Our program experienced
cultural change. Thank you to the
families that taught and helped me with
my limited Spanish. You taught me how
to listen and be patient.
Thank you to the families that shared their trials and
joys with me. You taught me how to pray more. How
happy I was with the first Spanish books and now we
use bilingual books for all. Parents that dropped and
picked up children, now volunteer and sit in classes. Our
sacramental program went from basic preparation to
students and parents being actively involved to
experience a deeper understanding of sacraments
together. You taught me faith tradition. My parish has
supported me and the PRAISE program throughout the
years. You taught me about believing and trusting. To
my office staff, who knows I make sure they keep
changing as we grow, you taught me about friendship. I
thank all who have helped me on my faith journey. I
know it would not have been fulfilled if each in your
own way did not lead me to walk the path.
I look forward to the new direction my faith journey
will take me. Just like from 5th grade on, I will let the
Holy Spirit guide me. As I tell the students, you need to
listen to the Holy Spirit, and now I will take more time
to practice what I preached.

Confirmada aqu en 5 grado, recuerdo el mensaje
del Obispo participa en tu Iglesia. Me preguntaba
cmo un estudiante de 5to grado podra
hacer eso? A medida que fui creciendo mi
participacin en la iglesia me llev a mi
experiencia como Directora del Educacin
Religiosa. Este ha sido un viaje en mi fe y
la comprensin del mensaje del Obispo.
Hace treinta aos con un programa de 250
estudiantes, no me imaginaba que crecera
a de ms de 900. De 20 catequistas pas a
90 en la actualidad, el cambio de 20
catequistas al empezar el programa entre
8 y 25 aos. Me ensearon dedicacin.
Nuestro programa experiment un cambio
cultural. Gracias a las familias que me
ensearon y ayudaron con mi espaol
limitado. Ustedes me ensearon a
escuchar y ser paciente.
Gracias a las familias que compartieron sus
experiencias y alegras conmigo. Ustedes me ensearon
a rezar ms. Lo feliz que fui con los primeros libros en

Los padres que dejan y recogen sus nios, ahora son
voluntarios y otros disfrutan las clases. Nuestro
programa sacramental pas de preparacin bsica para
los estudiantes y los padres estn activamente
involucrados a experimentar una comprensin ms
profunda de los sacramentos. Me ensearon tradicin de
fe. Gracias a mi parroquia que me ha apoyado y al

ensearon ha creer y confiar. A mi personal de la
oficina, que sabe que aseguro se que valla cambiando a
medida que crecemos, y me ensearon lo que es amistad.

The Reading Sage Visited St. Joseph Catholic School

St. Joseph Catholic School in Round Lake took their summer
reading program to a new level by hosting a preschool-grade 8
reading intervention program last week called The Reading Boot
Camp. The program was developed by Sean Taylor, who built a
reputation among educators as The Reading Sage, and is
sharing his innovative teaching methods with schools across the
country.
A dyslexic reading teacher, Taylor embarked on creating a
program that would strengthen student reading and critical
thinking skills in a fun, fast-paced way. This simulated, summer
camp experience creates an atmosphere of cooperation and team
building while replacing poor academic habits with more positive
ones. Taylor visited St. Joseph Catholic School to meet the
teachers who were facilitating the program and encourage the
teachers with best practices for engaging students while
increasing reading growth.
We recognize that not everyone learns the same way or at
the same pace. Thats where summer programs like this one can
give students an important educational boost, said Principal
Abbie Miller, St. Joseph Catholic School. When you remove the
pressure of homework and other studies, the children can better
concentrate on improving a specific skill set. Theyre more
relaxed and receptive to the things being taught.
