Students will be able to identify key text features in a nonfiction passage.
Students will use the text features while reading to help them understand the text.
1. Provide objectives: (What are students going to learn?)
Orally tell the students what they are going to learn today.

Time:1 minute

2. Demonstrate knowledge or skill: (Input/Modeling by the teacher)


Time: 7 minutes
First, go through text feature posters to review nonfiction text features. Ask students the purpose
of each text feature.
Next, tell students they will do another scavenger hunt for text features. There are 9 text features
in this article ask students if they can find all 9. Go over the text features.
Next, start reading the story with the students. Remind them of the focus question in the
beginning of the passage keep this in mind while they read.
3. Provide guided practice: (Guided practice with the teacher)
Time: 13 minutes
Allow students to take turns reading through the text.
Page 4 How does this diagram help you understand the text?
Page 5 What are trunks? Where can we find what trunk means if we didnt know?
Page 8 Talk about what the map means.
Page 9 What does calf mean?
Page 11/12 Point out the captions. What does male/female mean?
After reading refer back to the focus question. How does their size help them?
4. Check for understanding and provide student feedback: (How will you know students
understand the skill or concept? How will they know they get it?)? Time: 1 minutes
Informal observations How did they do on their scavenger hunt and comprehension of the text?
5: Provide extended practice and transfer: (Independent practice of the skill) Time: 5
minutes
Ask students to go back in the text and ask questions they still have about elephants Use sticky
notes. (We have practiced asking questions while reading nonfiction)
