FROM THE PULPIT

A little boy was overheard talking to himself as he walked through the back yard, baseball cap in place, carrying a ball and
bat. “I am the greatest baseball player in the world” he said proudly. Then he tossed the ball in the air, swung and missed.

Undaunted, he picked up the ball, threw it in the air and said, “I am the greatest baseball player ever.” He swung at the ball
again and again he missed.

He paused for a moment to examine the ball and the bat carefully.
Then, once again, he threw the ball into the air and said, “I am the greatest baseball player who ever lived.” He swung the bat
hard harder than ever, giving all the energy he had, and again missed the ball.

“Wow!” he exclaimed, “what a pitcher!”

This past Holy Week betrayal crept into the garden of Gethsemane.
For 30 pieces of silver, the man I kiss you will arrest.
Betrayal exclaimed, I am the greatest.
Denial reared its ugly face around the campfire of Peter.
I do not know the man.
Denial exclaimed, I am the greatest.
Death laughs from the cross.
I am the greatest.
The powers of darkness blot out the sun for three hours on Good Friday.
The Son of God is dead. I am the greatest.
Jesus is placed into the cold grave.

But then Easter morning breaks.

The first rays of daylight begin to awaken in the eastern sky.
An unmistakable power seeps into the tomb.
A faint stirring of angel wings.
A finger moves.
Eyelids begin to twitch.

JESUS IS ALIVE.
And death says, WOW, what a pitcher.
From that time on, for evermore, death can never say I am the greatest.
All death can do is humbly look into the face of God and say, wow, what a pitcher.
This, my friends, is the greatest story ever told.
This is the greatest message, the best news that you will ever hear.
JESUS IS ALIVE and death is no longer the greatest.
That’s what makes Easter so important, the best of all.
This Easter story of Jesus is for you!
