Introduction
Social media has become an important tool for communication these days. Individuals and
organizations both are using social media to enhance their network and communication.
Organizations are using social media platforms like facebook and twitter to interact with their
customers directly and take their feedbacks. Now a day social media has become significantly
popular in educational industry. Many universities are using social media platforms to interact
with their current and potential students. There are many benefits associated with the adoptability
of social media practices. Social media provides a better possibility of support and engagement
with students. Universities and other educational institutes are striving hard to maintain good
communication with the students and it is important to continuously keep up the social media
activities. There are also many other opportunities available for the educational institutes such as
online teaching. Many universities are successfully using these opportunities.

Literature review
Social media means a virtual space where people can interact with each other virtually. Most of
the tools of social media are still new but most the core concept of social networking goes back
to the very early days of the internet.
Now a day social media has changed the way people used to communicate. Almost every person
is a member of any sort of social media (Koshey, 2010). Almost all businesses are very active of
different social Medias to directly interact with their customers. The use of social media is
increasing day by day more people are using this kind of communication to extend their friends
circle and form a network of professionals.
Now these kind of changes are also being made in the educational industry(Light, 2009). Now
Lectures are being delivered in the form of online videos and podcasts and this phenomenon is
very common. Teachers are using several social media platforms such as facebook, twitter and
YouTube to interact with their students. Students are also using such platforms to discuss regular
activities. Now the traditional essays are also being converted in to video pitches from the
students.
The core purpose of such activities is to facilitate the learning process. For this purpose different
countries are taking different initiatives such as in India government is taking initiative to
introduce the tablet technology as a learning tool in the rural population of India.
Social media has totally changed the way we communicated. Social media has made it easy to
interact with people and connect with each other. Now a day many universities re using many
tools for their student for example Singapore Management University is using an online wiki
which helps its students to learn from peer learning and web research. Educational institutes are
looking towards more creative and interactive ways to interact with their students and because of
this reason many educational institutes has adopted social media learning procedures(Jacobi,
1991). According to a research most department which used social media for educational
purposes are humanities and Social sciences.Mainly social media is though to be a tool of young
generation but in educational industry this is not true. Different persons belonging to different

age groups are using social media, although the use of social media in older faculty is slightly
lower as compared to the younger faculty.
The adoption of social media in educational industry is no history. Social media tools are
recently adopted by the education industry. There are different social media platforms being used
in the education industry but some main social media platforms are Facebook, twitter, LinkedIn,
Message board and blogging. Facebook is the most used social media tool in the higher
education. Twitter is also being used for making announcements and notices for the students. On
message board professionals and teachers share their teaching stuff and materials. Colleges are
creating their Facebook pages and using it to market themselves. Colleges are also using social
media platforms to target potential students. On web colleges are offering virtual tours in which
potential students can watch different videos and pictures of the institution and activities. The
faculty members are using social media platforms to connect with other professionals and most
important tool for this purpose is LinkedIn. Teachers are also using different sites which are
providing a controlled environment. On social media students can comment and critique on each
other assignments and work. With the help of social media it has become easy for students to
work in team. Students can easily ask questions from their teachers on social media and any one
can help them. There are several advantages of social media in education industry but there are
also some challenges. First of all the social media account of the school or university should be
managed by a professional and by a person who have good knowledge about the institute other
wise people will think that it is not authentic(Seelye, 1984). There should be proper features on
the platform so that students could interact easily with the institute. Its not enough to make an
account on a social media platform, it is also very important to keep it running on daily basis.
So it could be easily said the now a days universities and colleges are finding new ways to
communicate with students and faculty and looking for new innovative ways(Odendaal, 2003).
Most of these innovative techniques are based on the social media. Initially when blogs were
introduced then educators and library professionals were the first one to adopt them because it
can save many complexities and every one was able to share their opinion and views and read
others. They were also used to reach to the students by sharing any news.
The first social networking site was composed of bulletin board, personal profiles and messaging
tools. Students were the first one to adopt this sort of social media. A social media site

FriendsReunited was used to maintain the existing relationship between the friends and extend
their network, after that Friendster was introduced which extends the implications of such
platform and when the Facebook was launched then people were already familiar with such kind
of stuff and were ready to do new experiments and make new networks(Yang, 2011). With the
increase traffic of students on such sites the academic professionals and Professors follow
students on such sites to try and find new means of communication. Now a day with so many
platforms like you tube, Twitter, Facebook, wikis and blogs social media is being used for many
purposes in higher education.
Talking about the adoption of social media, students remain ahead of others on the adoption
curve. This trend was mostly followed in the higher education sector. Mark Prensky defines this
phenomenon as a generational factor, students are more likely to be motivated and excited by
finding new friends and bonding with new people. Most students do experimenting on such
virtual platform because there is very less risk associated with the. Academic staff was slower in
adopting these changes but this could be justified with the generation gap. Eventually academic
staff caught up on the same pace and these social media platforms has helped them a lot in
communicating and engaging with students in a meaningful way. Social media has helped a lot in
driving change in the way of communications.
Warwick University was the first university in United Kingdom to introduce a blogging platform
for whole institute. It was introduced in 2004. Through this platform university encourages the
students and teachers to share the personal and professional opinion of that virtual platform. This
blogging platform had many effects on the university, this blog lead to a creative, lively and
thoughtful culture because of this culture a there was a very quick turnover of quality content
from the university professionals and students.
The strategy which was adopted by Warwick is now being adopted by many higher educational
institutes but these institutes are using social media platforms for such purpose. In this area
alumni and admission staff are leading they way by properly managing the social media
platforms and trying to properly engage with current and potential students. The most common
platform which is being used by the schools and colleges is Facebook pages. In United States
many schools and colleges are using customized school apps to properly manage their social
media activities(Tan & Wang, 2010). Schools app is a Facebook application which helps students

to connect with their respective institute and also it is like a Facebook within Facebook. On this
application students can find all the data which is shared by the educational institute and before
even taking admission students can take a go through ever educational institute.
Talking about the opportunities of social media in the education industry there are many of
them. The most common use of social media in educational institute is to enhance the events and
publications. Social media provides the opportunity for communication and develop professional
network between professionals and students. This sort of communication works better in a closed
space such as on a local network.
The very first and most common opportunity for educational institute is better student approach
and engagement. For most of the educational organizations the most important relationship is
with their students and social media is a great way and medium to engage and support
students(Baliga, et al., 2012). For most of the universities and educational institute, email is the
most common and formal way of communication. Students joined these educational institute and
they already have established network on the social media platforms. It is in the favour of
universities and other educational institute to use such social media platforms to interact with
students but such educational institute must needs to sort out that what tools they are going to use
and what tools would be better for the culture of the institute. It is impossible for the staff to
monitor such social media platforms all the times but such presence and endorsement can help
students a lot. By offering online courses and other events, educational institute can engage
students more efficiently.
Another opportunity which is provided by the use of social media is engagement in teaching and
learning. With the help of social media educational institutes can enhance their learning
capabilities for example if an university is offering wikis to help out its students then more
students will be engaged in the learning environment(Aurigi, 2005). This sort of processes can
help students to take a good responsibility of their own learning and build a good and productive
social circle. This way of learning is quite different from the traditional way as it is one way
learning and is more challenging and highly rewarded.
Another opportunity which exist for the educational institutes is the support for flexible or distant
learning. For such students who are studying part time and if it is difficult for them to properly

be a part of educational community the social media can help them a lot(Althaus & Tewksbury,
2000). Because of social media groups such students can connect with their peers and forms
friendships, because of social media they can feel a part of community. For instance the MSc
degree in eLearning at University of Edinburgh is taught through e-learning and it targets
students from all over the world, this university properly uses social media tools to connect their
students with their peers and teachers. Blogs, twitter and Facebook are used to keep these
students connected with each other. YouTube and skype are used for the purpose of video
conferencing and tutorials. The Open University is also looking towards using different social
media tools to interact virtually with their students and enable a community of learners.
With many opportunities different risks are also associated with the adoptability of social media.
Because of social media the educational institute gets great exposure and in case of any failure
there is a huge possibility of embarrassment is a public place. The main issue behind the risks
associated with social media is its democratic nature, as any person could post any kind of stuff
so of course there will be some risks associated. It is the responsibility of educational institutes to
look after the private information of students and faculty but by registering with social media
platforms one has to provide personal information(Berg, 2007). There should be some measures
from the side of university to properly manage these kind of issues.
If a university or any educational institute want to save itself from any sort of risk associated
with the exposure of social media then it is important to make several policies which would
tackle all kind of risks and issues associated with it. These policies should be stable enough to
acknowledge benefits and risks of the social media at the same time(Drucker, 2005). The bans on
social media platforms are not very much effective or encouraged, such restrictions can push
individuals like students and staff members to start some controversial topics which wouldnt be
in the favor of university reputation. Such kind of restrictions could have a negative impact on
university reputation. There should be proper regulations and guidelines, these guidelines should
be nurturing and should highlight good practice. The best way to do it by creating a social media
usage policy or guidance document. This document should contain all the guidance related to the
usage of social media and all related rules and regulations.
Most of the times embedding social media in the culture of educational institute can take a lot of
time and efforts. In such case it would be better to consider the outcome of these efforts and plan

accordingly. It is important for the educational institute to first test run a platform with peers or
colleagues before opining it for all students. By this activity university would become the
shortfalls and problems of such system.
Now a days blogs have become one main tool for research and teaching purpose. These blogs
have become a main platform for open discussions and to share innovative ideas. There are a lot
of privacy risks associated with such kind

CHAPTER # 3
Methodology
Research Philosophy
The research focuses on role of social media in education industry. After the
analysis of number of environmental factors different recommendations will be
listed. The main purpose is to develop a strategy to conduct the research. For
research purposes different kind of literature could also be a big concern and this
example is used to make this research understandable for the reader.

Research Design
This study reflects the role of social media in education industry and the
consideration of proper research and analysis in order to erode misconceptions
with social media. Both qualitative and quantitative data has to be considered
while undergoing a research. Quantitative data depends upon figures which reflect
the impact of social media in education industry. This report also includes
interpretive framework which is used to interpret the data collected through online
research.

Research Approaches
The research approach is quantitative in nature. Non-experimental approach is
suitable as the distortion in policies with regard to gender cant be done to study,
secondly the research do involve the human behavior in terms of opinions that is

not subject to experimental research. Lastly, the interpretation has played an

important role to guide the decision maker in terms of describing pros and cons of
different strategies to erode misconceptions regarding social media in education
industry.

Research Methods
Quantitative method design will be used for this study, which is used in order to
meet the research objectives. The reasoning for choosing quantitative study is
short amount of time to complete the project and another reason is the objectivity
of the nature of topic, so it will help in the distributed learning environment. For
the quantitative section, survey questionnaires will be used (specifically from the
target market to know the trends). The surveys will be online, as the target market
exists a far from the area of access, it will help us to collect relevant information,
which will be used further for devising recommendations. The questionnaire
which will be used will consist of mostly closed natured questions, as people at
the large scale do not prefer to answer open ended question, especially when the
medium of getting response is telephonic or internet.

Research Strategies
The research strategy is to use helpful materials for the research that has been
collected for the other purposes in past, for example; the articles that have been
published in the journals and the books which have been written by the experts of
the subject of international business. With that the plan is to collect the primary
data from the target market to better know the trends in the market, while the
methods for selected strategy have already been discussed in the section of
research methods.

Data Collection Methods-Primary and Secondary

Secondary data:

Secondary data is the data that has been gathered in the past for some other research
purpose, and it is actually the already available information on different mediums for the
research topic Secondary data will be collected on the bases of validity for the research, as the

main point is to make sure that the data is going to help in our research or not, different mediums
will be used, as; articles published in journals, websites of different authorities and publication
bodies, the books are also one of the main source for the collection of the secondary data, though
these are the studies which have been completed in the past but those are useful even to know
about the trends and to make the future predictions.
Primary data:

Primary data is the data that is gathered for the specific purpose, and it is actually the first
hand information. For the primary data collection purposes discussed earlier, questionnaire will
be used. Survey will be conducted from general public including students of different
universities and colleges, the major is the availability of target market in far areas and with that
cost factor is also there as it is one of the cheapest of all to have in data collection methodologies.

Sampling Method Chosen-Sample Size

The judgmental sampling has been done to gather data from the sample, the reason for selection
is the constraints in terms of time and less accessibility to the target market. The sample size will
be 10 respondents for survey. Questionnaire will be conducted from general public and most
probably students.

Data Analysis
For the purpose of data analysis, we will be using different software. The main focus will be on
Microsoft excel that will enable us to have a view of overall picture in form of snapshot. Pictorial
representation will be given importance as by using this we will be able to interpret data in
different ways.

Research Reliability and Validity

The research has been designed in a way that it minimizes the chances of fakeness. It has been
make sure that the research is reliable and valid by the use of different techniques. Different
books have been studied which have been written by the experienced writers in the particular
field. The articles which have been mentioned in the research are from the published sources, as
there are always standards for publishing an article in a journal or even on a website of some
regulatory body. The data has been analyzed by looking on to the past trends, and also by

gathering information from the target market. Data representation will also be the done by the
use of different graphs and charts that will enable us to interpret data correctly.

Limitations faced in research

Followings re some of the limitations which have been faced during the research:
The data collection has been the question mark for the research, as it was not easy to
collect data from the respondents living far away from each other. But in order to
overcome that limitation, online mediums have been used, which ensured the data
collection from far areas which couldnt be possible by in person research.
One of the other limitation in conducting research was the reliability issue, as there are
always questions raised on the authenticity of the data collected through different
mediums, for that purpose, it had been made sure that different mediums are used to
collect the same information, also the authentic publications have been used in order to
get insights from the work of reputed authors, whose work is being accepted by different
magazines, journals, and other publication bodies.
In addition to the above mentioned issues, there were also limitations due to shortage of
time as well as less amount available for the research. As, the accuracy of the research
gets better with the increase in time period available to conduct the research and if 100%
accuracy is required then it might take lot of time both in terms of data collection as well
as data analysis. Similarly, talking about the cost factor, the research has been based on
the mediums which have been easily available as well as cost-effective.
So by the use of different techniques, we have tried to minimize our limitations for the
research which were at times causing hindrance.

CONCLUSION
Crux of the findings
It has been found in the research that the usage of social media is increasing day by day, even the
means to access social media is tending to be more portable. As the results reflect that more
people use social media on mobile devices and tablets as compared to the fixed computer. Social
media has direct impact on education industry, as it is not only the medium of marketing of the
educational institution, but also it provides the platform for students and the educational staff to
discuss educational matters. While on the other side of the picture, the increase usage is also
damaging the performance of the students which is affecting their grades. Most of the people,
who use social media more, tend to spare less time for reality and they also suffer from physical
as well as mental diseases. Summing up, it can be said that the excess in usage or glut of
anything do not produce favorable results, similar is the case with social media. Numbers of
students are getting weaker in language due to excessive use of social media, as students tend to
write short phrases rather than full sentences which is having negative impacts on their usage of
grammar, punctuation, as well as usage of vocabulary. No doubt there are pros and cons for the
usage of social media so at the same time there is the need to take benefits from the usage and
minimize the negative impacts by the usage of effective strategies. The teachers can use social
media as a platform of communication with the students; they can have polls on social media and
act as the moderator in order to get the discussion on the specific topic. The helping material ca
be uploaded on social media, as its usage is increasing day by day and students tend to use social
media more on portable devise, which means that by uploading the helping material of studies on
social media, teachers can make the content accessible to student easily. But there is a need to
have the regular check on content of social media as one comment can make it difficult for the
institute or the moderator to defend because the direct responses will keep on coming in. So the
usage of social media is beneficial as well as unhealthy for the education industry, but the
benefits can be taken by the use of appropriate strategies from different stakeholders, like;
students, teachers, and educational institute. While to maximize the benefits of social media, it is
important to educate students about the importance of information and communication
technology in education as well as grooming.
