ing the commitment to fighting this deadly disease. Individuals can reduce their ~ Christopher Reeves
risk of developing cancer by practicing healthy eating habits, exercising, limiting
sun exposure, avoiding tobacco, knowing their family history, and getting regular screenings from the doctor.

SCREENING & EARLY DETECTION

Regular screening examinations by a health care provider can result in the detection and removal of
precancerous growths, as wellas the diagnosis of cancers at an early stage, when they are most treatable.
Screening can detect the following cancers at earlier stages when treatment is more likely to be successful:
 Breast  Prostate
 Rectum  Oral cavity Cancers that can be prevented or detected
 Cervix  Skin earlier by screening account for at least half of

Why do YOU Relay??

This month’s feature is on Lynn Holmes and why she Relays.

My name is Lynn Holmes. This is my story. My Dad was diagnosed with throat cancer in
May of 2007. Five months later in October, I was told that I had breast cancer. Then
came chemo, surgery and radiation to get rid of my cancer. Then in May 2009, I was told
that my cancer had metastasized to bone. Today my cancer is stable. Just recently my
aunt has now been told that she has breast cancer.

For me, Relay is so important. Cancer affects EVERYONE! Whether it is you personally
fighting cancer, or a family member fighting; or a friend fighting or a co-worker that is
fighting. Cancer is everywhere.

I decided to become involved in Relay For Life in August 2007. My reason was to be a part of something important to
help fight cancer. Relay For Life raises money for the ACS. This money helps with research, improving treatment op-
tions, education and financial assistance programs.

I am a Relay participant, a survivor, have been a survivor speaker, a team of co-workers participant, and this year I am
on the committee as Games Chairperson. I have even inspired my son, Travis, who is a sophomore at UNL this year.
The University recently had their Relay For Life on March 27th and raised over $34,000! Good job University students!
See you in August at the Outdoor Classroom when we remember, celebrate and fight back.

you have to give.” Eleanor Roosevelt
