Falls district describes
steps which led
to arrest of teacher
BY THOMAS J. MCKILLEN
MANAGING EDITOR

While the criminal case against a

former Menomonee Falls High School
teacher proceeds, the School District
of Menomonee Falls detailed the steps
it took to forward the matter to law
enforcement and what steps it will be
taking in the weeks ahead.
This shouldnt be a conversation
within a school environment, there
should never be a violation of trust
between that teacher and student relationship, District Superintedent
Patricia Greco said Dec. 23 a day
after April M. Novak, 30, of Sussex,
was charged with 12 counts of sexual
assault of a student by school staff.
Novak was a reading interventionist at the high school, a position she
held since August 2013.
According to the criminal complaint, a police detective was advised
Dec. 15 that a teacher at the school
observed a male student and the suspect embraced with a possible kiss in
her classroom on Dec. 11.
District officials stated the teacher
who observed the embrace reported
that information to high school
administration with 30 minutes left in
the school day on Dec. 11. At that
time, Novak who served as a reading
interventionist at the high scool since
August 2013 was placed on leave.
Following a school investigation that
occurred on Dec. 14, police were called
early Dec. 15 regarding the matter.
The School District of Menomonee
Falls issued a statement Dec. 17 stating an investigation was occurring and
that the staff member who was the
subject of the investigation was placed
on leave. Novak subsequently resigned
from the district.
According to the criminal complaint filed Dec. 22, the student said
that he and the suspect engaged in
sexual intercourse in the classroom

less than 12 times. The victim told

police none of the intercourse
occurred outside of school.
When questioned by police, Novak
said that from mid-October through
December she and the student engaged
in intercourse 12 times in the classroom.
Bail was set at $100,000 for Novak.
A preliminary hearing has been scheduled for 3 p.m. Jan. 4 at the Waukesha
County Courthouse.
After the charges were filed, the
district sent out a statement to parents announcing the charges.
The safety and well-being of our
students is the highest priority for the
School District of Menomonee Falls.
The District takes this responsibility
very seriously and will promptly investigate any concerns regarding student
safety while also insuring that any
such investigation is handled professionally and respects the confidentiality of all persons involved, the district said in the statement sent to parents.
The statement added that counseling will be available for students and
that the safety of our students has
been and remains our highest priority.
During a news conference on Dec.
22, Greco said Novaks actions do not
represent the expectations we hold for
our staff, nor are her actions a reflection of our other district employees.
The behavior described within the
criminal complaint violates the trust
of the students family, Ms. Novaks
family and the community and the
expectations we hold for any educator
and most impacted is the student,
Greco said.
She said the district focus is to
support the student and his family and
all family members impacted by the
situation. Greco said the district has
taken action in working with students
and staff to demonstrate a level of
support and keep a level of focus in
the learning envirionment.
This isnt a staff development

Agnes Aggi Thurner has been creatively expressing herself her whole
life, beginning with the first poem she
wrote at age eight and most recently
having a poem she wrote at age 81 published in a book called Bedtime
Stories.
The Menomonee Falls Village at the
Falls resident entered her poem Daddy
Long Legsa playful rhyme about
watching a backyard spiderin a contest sponsored by Holiday Retirement,
which has 300 senior communities

nationwide, last summer. A few months

later, the writer learned her piece had
been one of just five selected out of
more than 70 entries.
I was happy when I found out. Im
always happy to be published, Aggi
said in an interview with the Express
News. I had already started writing the
poem before I moved in here, when I
was on my deck at my home in Mequon,
just sitting and watching a daddy longs.
But at that time I didnt know how the
poem would end, which is often the

Board approves memorandum of understanding

for proposed Dheinsville Park pavilion
The Germantown Village Board
approved
a
Memorandum
of
Understanding with the Germantown
Historical Society Dec. 7 regarding the
development of a pavilion at
Dheinsville Park.
The memorandum states that any
money raised for the pavilion will go
toward the construction and related
costs of the pavilion, the village and
historical society will have final
approval over the design of the pavilion, and the historical society will be
responsible for project management and
construction of the pavilion with over-

sight and approval from the village.

The memorandum further states
the pavilion will be property of the village, which will be responsible for
maintenance. The village will insure
the pavilion while it is under construction and after it is completed. The
memorandum also states the village
Park and Recreation Department will
be responsible for the scheduling and
maintenance of the structure.
During board discussion, Village
Attorney Brian Sajdak said the
Memorandum of Understanding is

"straightforward" which doesn't bind

parties to commitments. Village
President Dean Wolter said the document is a "first step" similar to one
taken by the village for the construction of a new park shelter in Fireman's
Park.
Jeff Dhein, a member of the
Germantown Historical Society board,
later stated that the society is moving
forward with fund raising efforts related to the pavilion.

need, this is illegal behavior. We have

to recognize what has occurred here is
not typical and shoudnt be typical in
any learning environment. That level
of decision making was extreme, and
thats actually the trust we have to
build with our local community as well
the families that we serve, Greco said.
Later during the news conference,
Greco noted that under the law educators are mandatory reporters who
have to report any instances of inappropriate conduct and that the teacher
who reported the situation followed
the law.
This colleague was remarkably
strong in coming forward and did

Dear Dr. Winter, I have seen your dentures on your

website and they look amazing! My problem is that I
have had my dentures made 3 times and they still hurt
and rock! I have asked the dentist repeatedly to please
help me as I am in pain and must take my dentures out to
chew. Can you fix this dentists dentures so I dont have
to pay for another set! Please help me, as I cant live this
way.
Dear Ann, I am so sorry for your problems. You did
not mention if this was an immediate set of dentures
given to you the day your other teeth were removed or
simply a replacement for older dentures. There is an art
to making dentures and even with tremendous care and
skill; denture fabrication is a process that requires
patience. As people live with dentures they experience
continued bone loss. There is so much bone loss that
dentures begin to move and may actually slide during
chewing even with using denture adhesives. When teeth
are removed you actually lose up to 40% of the
remaining bone width in the first year after teeth are
removed and you can continue to lose 40-60% of the
remaining bone over the next 5 years of denture use!
The solution is to save teeth if possible and if not
practical to place mini-implants or traditional implants to
preserve the bone.
Implants preserve bone! That means that over time
dentures will not get as loose and you will chew better.
I will get back to your particular problem. Ill-fitting
dentures usually require that they be made again from
scratch. It is just too easy to change someones denture
and then feel that the changes that were made could have
made your situation worse! So most dentists will want to
start over with new impressions, brand new teeth and
mountings to try and remedy the problems you have
experienced. Trying to make your dentures fit may
actually take longer and cost a tremendous amount of
money, which would be wasted if your dentures could
not be made to be comfortable.
In rare situations, I will work with someones old
dentures to improve comfort, eliminate denture sores or
simply to create a healthy foundation for making a new

exactly what we would hope a colleague would do in protecting what

they believe was an inappriate relationship with a student,Greco said.
She ended the news conference by
stating that in any situation we have
opportunities to actually reflect on
what could we do differently, what
conversations should we make sure
that were prompting. We take that
responsibility very seriously and start
the debriefing process, we share it
across the entire leadership team.
These cases are rare, and they should
be they shouldnt happen to begin
with. When we take the opportunity to
reflect on what we can do better, we
absolutely do that.

set of dentures. I would have to assess your old
dentures to make an evaluation of how close they are to
ideal and the status of your bite and how your teeth fit
together for optimal chewing. Then I could decide if we
can do anything with your current set of teeth.
