Assignment/Activity TitleDrama- Dada Performance

Portfolio CategoryCritical Reasoning
In this project, students were asked to work in groups and create some kind of performance about an issue. My
group and I decided to do our performance on labels. We then decided to perform a scenario where there is a new student
who is labeled by other students. This assignment reflects my growth in the category of critical reasoning. I never really
believed labels to be good, or even true, but after completing this performance, I realize even more that labels can really
harm someone. I now thoroughly understand my thinking that labels are bad and harmful, and I am now able to question
labels as a general idea. There are certain labels believed to be good, but if you begin to question those labels, those labels
may be bad after all. Im not sure why people feel the need to label everything, from their relationship to their gender. I
think people may label things to try to understand certain things, but in certain cases, by labeling someone, they only
succeed in hurting the person labeled.
This assignment revealed to me that everyone has strengths and weaknesses, and sometimes there is only fine line
between these two things. I consider one of my strengths to be very focused, but that is also a weakness because I will
then become absorbed in one aspect of an assignment. With this project, I focused too much on the meaning and trying to
have layers in the performance. Although it was not bad to do this, I shouldve focused on the entire project, and the
significance of the dada movement to improve our performance. The significance of the dada movement was that all the
different types of performances addressed issues, and were random, both meant to provoke a reaction in the audience.
I think it is important to include this performance in my portfolio because it represents most of the categories, and
the goal of this project was something important to be able to reflect upon. It represents the need for change in societys
mindset, and allows me to think more about how I can help contribute to some of the reshaping society needs. In drama
class, we have done different things about society, with things such as exercises with high class and low class, as well as
these dada performances.
This performance relates to my future in a few different ways. The first way is just improving my attitude towards
labels and names. The other way is because as I grow older, I am exposed more and more to issues such as bullying,
labels, rudeness, and unfair things. The more exposed I am, and the more I explore these subjects in class, the more
prepared I will be when I venture out into the world. In this world, there are many unfair things- racism, sexism, etc. This
project has deepened my understanding that even though labels are not something that is normally called to the front of
the line of issues, those unfair things- racism and sexism- they are based on labels. Racism only exists because people
have been labeled base on their ethnicities, and the same thing applies to sexism. I now understand that all things in this
world are going to somehow be connected to each other.
Im proud of this assignment because, although others may not realize it, by addressing labels as an issue, we
addressed so many more issues that are also taking place, things that are much more well known than labels, solely
through this one project. This idea makes me proud because I was able to address all sorts of issues in which there are
many concerns, all through this one project.
