Tutorial Task (Week 2)

Based on the sample of the pupils written work above, there are several writing
problems that can be identified. The first writing problem is the spelling. There are
many spelling errors as the pupil merely spelled the words based on the sound of the
words. For instance, GOOBY supposed to be Goodbye and HOWRES supposed
to be Hours. Secondly, the pupil also faced problem using the correct punctuation
marks. This can be clearly seen when the full stop is wrongly placed in the sample.
For example, the full stop is misused between the phrase my barents and sayed
gooby. Moreover, based on the sample, there is also a problem in slant. The letters
written by the pupil did not lean to the same way. This can be clearly seen in the noun
LONNDEN. The letter L in the noun LONNDEN slanted to the left whereas the
letter N slanted to the right. The spacing in the written work is also one of the
problems as the spacing of every word is not consistent and there were some words
written too closely and this has caused the reader to misunderstand that there is only
one word instead of two words. For example, the phrase ON SUNNEDAY in the
written work, the spacing between these two words was too close. The next problem is
that the pupil had misused the capital letters. The pupil wrote all the letters in capital
letters and there was no small letters. In fact, the capital letter only can be used at the
first letter of every sentence and the first letter for the proper noun such as the name of
the places. For instance, the pupil had to write Lonnden if we avoid the spelling
mistake instead of LONNDEN. The last problem is the alignment. The alignment of
the words in the written work was not consistent and the letters written are not in a
straight line.
Thus, there are some activities and exercises that the teachers can do to solve
the problems and improve the pupils handwriting. Firstly, there are many activities that
can be conducted in order to improve the pupils spelling. One of them is that the
teacher should start up by giving a list of words that the pupil probably misspelled based
on the sound of the words. Then, the teacher can get the pupil to practise on the words.

After that, the teacher can ask the pupil to do the detection of spelling mistakes in
worksheet. This will help the pupil to pay attention to the spelling of the words.
One of the writing problems is that the full stop is wrongly placed in the
sentence. In order to solve this problem, the teacher can start her lesson by teaching
the pupil what and when to use full stop correctly. The teacher can teach the pupil that
full stops are used to indicate the end of a sentence. Then, the teacher can give the
pupil a passage without any full stops and ask the pupil to put the full stops in the
suitable place.
There are some activities that can be carried out to solve the problem of slant of
the pupil. First of all, the teacher should write a word as a sample on the board and ask
the pupil to come to the front to write the word. The pupil must make sure the letters he
wrote lean the same way and the teacher can correct the pupil if the letters do not lean
in the same way. Moreover, there is one activity that can be done by the teacher to
solve the spacing problem and this activity is called stickers spacing activity. It
means that the spaces between words that written by the pupil must be wide enough to
fit a small sticker. There is a visual reminder that placed on the pupils desk during the
writing process which shows a small sticker placed between the words. After the pupil
finished the writing process, the paper is given to the teacher and a small sticker is
placed between words where the sticker will fit. If the space between the words is too
small, a sticker will not be able to be placed in that area and the pupil will need to write
again.
In addition, the problem where the pupil had misused the capital letters can be
solved by teaching the pupil capital and small letters as well as their usage. Then, the
teacher can get the pupil to practise by providing him a worksheet which will require him
to match each small letters to its capital letters. After the pupil can identify each of the
small and capital letters, the teacher can teach him when to use the capital and small
letters in an appropriate way and provide a worksheet in which all the sentences given
are in small letters. Then, the pupil is asked to put in the correct capital letters in the
sentences.

The activity can be used to solve the alignment problem is that the teacher can
give the pupil a short story and read the short story to the pupils. Next, the teacher can
draw the lines on the board and write a few sentences of the story on the board. After
that, the teacher can ask the pupils to copy the story into their three-line exercise book
neatly and correctly. With this, the pupil will get the chance to see the demonstration
done by the teacher before writing the sentences in their exercise book.
In conclusion, the above are the problems faced by the pupil and several
activities that could be given to the pupil in helping him to become a better writer.
