Delhi metro is one of the most advanced modes of transport in the modern world. Before I share with you my experience of Delhi metro, let me share
a little information regarding how this ultra modern marvel came into existence.

As we all must be aware that the problem of traffic jams and lack of good public transportation is a problem afflicting all the major Indian cities. Delhi
Metro Rail Corporation was formed with the motive of providing a fast, comfortable and ultra modern transport system to the people of Delhi which will
be reliable as well as environment friendly. The construction work started sometime in late 1998 and the first metro train started running after about
four years. At present the metro network is spread over vast territory and you can visit attractions like Connaught Place, Chandni Chowk and the Delhi
railway stations by using metro. Construction is well on its way to provide metro links to most other parts of Delhi including most areas of hitherto
untouched South Delhi and the NCR towns like Noida, Faridabad and Ghaziabad etc. Once this construction is completed by end 2010, metro will
become really the life support for Delhi's transportation system.

The Delhi metro is an ultra modern transportation system and travelling in the metro trains is quite a delight when you compare it to any other local
train system in the country. The difference is apparent the moment you enter the CISF guarded stations. There is not the ususal pandemonium, the
shouting, cursing and the dirt which is normally witnessed at all the railway stations but what lies in front of you is a well lit station which doesn't have
even a speck of dirt. The public announcement system is accurate and for a relief quiet understandable. The metro stations are divided into two levels
named as concourse and platform. The concourse levels have ticketing counters and the vendor stalls. Lifts, escalators and stairs are available to
take you upstairs or downstairs (depending on whether you travel by underground or overhead lines) to the platform level. The underground stations
are completely airconditioned and so are the trains. You can buy cosmetics, books, small gift items and chocolates etc at the metro stations and now
many of the metro stations also have the metro malls which provide you a complete shopping experience.

Instead of the ticketing, metro passengers use either token or smart cards which are swiped at the turn-stills to enter the station premises.

(Smart card used at metro stations)

The trains run at a regular interval of 3-6 minutes depending upon the line and whether its peak hours or not. The moment the train moves off, you feel
as if you are gliding through the sky if you are on the overhead section and the roads, buildings, railway tracks or gardens are crossed by the trains
which mostly run on elevated corridors supported by pillars built on central verge of roads. The underground section is also a technical marvel
especially considering that the trains are running at a fast speed underneath buildings which are as old as 100 years or more in age in certain areas. It
also bridges a gap between people because people of all walks of life, rich or poor use metro to commute comfortably and to avoid the bumper to
bumper traffic of Delhi.

A journey on the airconditioned metro train is extremely comfortable and it doesn't tire you down like a typical local train journey would. However, I
must warn you that the trains of late have become a playground for pick-pockets and you really need to be very careful while travelling in the metro
especially on the underground levels and at Kashmere gate stations. I got this wisdom after losing my humble nokia N-95 and as they say 'it hurts'.
Apart from this the journey is a pleasure.
