Whenoneplatesitsperpendiculartoanother,asshownabove,you
haveaTjoint.Thetwosidesareweldedwheretheymeet,eitheron
onesideorbothsides,dependingontheproductspecsor
constructionplans.You'llfindthatTjointsareextremelycommonin
structuralwelding.AfilletweldisusuallyusedforaTjoint,but
occasionallythespecscallforsomebeveling.Inthatcase,you'llfill
thejointwithagrooveweld.
Unlikethewaythediagramabovedepictsit,theweldforaTjoint
shouldpenetrateintobothworkplates,fusingthemtogether.To
assuregoodpenetration,theverticalplatecanbebeveledin
differentwayspriortowelding,asshownbelow.

ThemostcommonTjointisthefirstexample,knownasamultipass
filletweld.Althoughthenextsectionofthistutorialcoverswelding
symbolsindetails,here'saheadstart:Whenaweldtype(fillet,
groove,etc.)appearsonthebottomsideofthehorizontalline,it
meanstheweldisperformedclosesttothearrow.Whereyousee
theweldshapedepictedontopoftheline,itmeanstheweldis
performedontheothersideoftheplate,awayfromthearrow.When
theshapeisincludedaboveandbelowthehorizontallineinthe
symbol,bothsidesofthejointmustbewelded.

above,oritmayonlyhavepartialpenetration.Eitherway,there
needstobeagapbetweentheplatesbeforeyoustarttheweld.The
thickertheplates,thegreaterthegap.Forplatethicknessesofmore

thetwosidesdon'tjointataperpendicularangle,butinsteadshare
thesameplane(orsomethingakintoit).
