CVNG2003 Design II
(i)The following data is provided for the design of a culvert. Design both a circular
and a box culvert for this information. Give all assumptions made. Design for return
periods of 25 years and 50 years. What special features would you consider to
include in the design?

The catchment area is 30 hectares

The catchment is composed of 20% forests, 5% road, 20% residential area

and the remainder is agriculture.

The time of concentration is 15 minutes

Discharge for 25yr flood is 40m3/s

Discharge for 50 year flood is 70m3/s

Length of the culvert 25m

Natural channel invert elevations : inlet 14.50m and outlet 14.35m

Culvert slope =0,0015m/m

Soil type sandy loam

(ii) Consider the three photos below that show blocked culverts. Use the templates below to do a
risk assessment of the original designs

small lake, which took most of December to be pumped out.

Officials managing the project avoided clearing the culvert until the level of
impounded water dropped, because the uncontrolled flow would have
flooded residents downstream. Instead, the water was pumped at a
controlled rate into a ditch along the road.
