When I think of girl gang I

think of female empowerment and
spice girls

What do you think of when you hear the word 'GANG'?

What do you think of when you hear the words 'GIRL GANG'?

A group of people committing petty crimes

'The word gang to me means a group of friends that
stick by each other no matter what, always together and
have power because they have a large number of people

A group of woman pretending to be more interesting

than they actually are. Females equivalent of squad
- Ross Mason, 25

When I think of the word girl gang I think pink, flowers

funky outfits an empowerment.
- Alexandra Way, 22

The word gang means war, crime, death and faculty of

people, like
organisation
Girl gang means to me a group of friends, a closely
knitted group
- Chanelle Jasmine Lewis, 21

Yeah, I'm The Best

I'm So Cocky
I've Got A Mob Like ASAP Rocky
I Set Trends Then Man Copy..
The word gang doesnt, mean a lot to me personally,
as Ive never been in one or experienced people close
to me being on one. Gangs are something that are
separate from me as I have never lived somewhere until
recently where gang culture is a big problem
Girl Gang makes me think of sort of group that is special/picked carefully those kind of girls that are intimidating to other females who they deem not good
enough to be in their gang. Something negative, the
word doesnt really make me think of anything positive.
Just a group of girls trying to make others feel envious
or intimated by being the best or the most attractive
or the strongest etc something that is non inclusive to
all girls
- Lizzie Fletcher, 20

A gang is an organised group of men, woman and both

genders either criminals or non criminals
I think of girl gangs as a pack of females trying to express their emotions or violence as an all in one. I see a
girl gang as a weak group where they encourage others
to trick themselves into believing theyre strong when
theyre most doubtful themselves
- Flossie May Garton, 22

In my eyes Gang to me means squad and a group of

united people but obviously there is that image of it being a bad thing and term to describe a group of people
getting up to no good
Girl gang just sounds like what a group of girls would
call their squad
- Milo Santos, 20

I think death, drugs, Mexico , China , mafia and poverty. I also think of the government because they make
guns and drugs more available for the poorer communities so they can kill each other off. Bullies, wannabe
gangstas also comes to my head when I think of the
people who dont live in poor areas and get things
payed for by their parents but still choose persue
them selves as gangstas
I think the same thing except they would be more
spiteful when they hurt people for example, cutting another girls hair off or in a worst case
scenario throwing acid in another girls face. Other points that comes
to my head are matching outfits

Strong, impressionable, glam
TEXT ARIEL DRAPER

It is high time women took their stand. True femininity has never felt so empowered when girls stand
together; strong, impressionable with an almost satire of glam in pinks and glitter but fierce and
stubborn in their faces as says their resolve. This thinking and imagery inspired our theme for our
concept of girl gangs. The mood is calmly confident but fierce, which is mirrored in the S/S 2016
looks we styled.
As soon as we think of girl gang we think of a mob like cluster of girls, throwing dirty looks around
at everyone but each other, probably on a street corner blasting out trap music and smoking.
Much like a male gang but prettier. So this is what we created. An infused mix of masculine and
feminine to form an armed, united but also femininely independent front. We wanted baggy tops,
dungarees, whites and pinks along with black and navy. Crop tops with fabric penned motifs and
flowery prints on lightweight fabrics. Layering up we could create the desired effect. Our choice of
clothes came from our own collections and gang inspired styling but with the strong hints girly and
brightly coloured clothes. We created youthful playful looks with the hairstyles; buns on either side
of the head, French plaits, top knot buns amid curls, dip dyes and braids. We added gold, pink and
purple glitter hairspray and hair rings along with bandannas and bucket hats.
For the makeup we kept a subtle base with light make up, little mascara, blusher and nude lips
for freshness, then added hot pink and popping purple glitter across and under the eyelids to
accentuate the appearance.
Our style team and photographer worked with the models to create these fierce feminine
poses for S/S 2016. The models exude attitude and a fierce feminine mentality. Tall and short our
models stood together to take group photos for the mob effect portraying exactly what a girl gang
would look like. The looks like this can be found in vintage shops like Cow, and high street shops
everywhere at an affordable price such as Topshop, Urban Outfitters, Miss Selfridge and H&M.
Online is our favourite though, Asos supplying us with most of the wardrobe, and most of any kind
of clothing you could think of. Anywhere really, you just need the attitude and sass and mental
thinking that you own the streets and youre on the right track.
Street style inspired the mood in our looks. We took photographs of boys similar ages to our
models that influence the mood behind our looks. Again, dungarees, white baggy tops, dark
colours with strong poses. Throughout the streets of Birmingham we found a multitude of teenagers
and young adults with a similar attitude and realised that this trend is catching like fire at the effect
of women supporting each other and honestly feeling how they look.

Worst Heros Ever

Featuring The Danish Girl, Suicide Squad and Regresion

Text Ariel Draper

The perfect kick ass and feminine films for you of 2015/2016 we recommend The
Danish Girl and Suicide Squad. One not even quite like the other. The Danish Girl is already
out; a strong, real story of the first transgender and the battles she had to face with her
relationships, the world and herself. Behind this film opens up the reality of one of the first
transgender stories. We love a fierce but real and honest depiction of female struggle. This
film is moving and powerful, and beautifully portrayed.
We love love love the costumes in the Suicide Squad, especially Harley Quinn, played
by the absolutely gorgeous Margot Robbie, rooted to be a fan fave. She wears a strong
image red bomber jacket and hot pants, thick gold belt, red and white t-shirt, along with
kick ass stiletto white boots. Her blonde hair is playfully curled and pigtailed, one side dip
dyed bright mermaid blue, the other a girly hot pink. We want to see this look in 2016!!! It
will be hot as hell for Halloween at least. We just dont recommend walking around with a
baseball bat.
Find this look: Asos Fila Basic T-shirt with logo detail and colour block 25, Boohoo
Sara MA1 Bomber 20, Ebay Ladies Neon Lycra Stretchy shorts 2.99, Boohoo Ria
Gold Chain Waist Belt 7, Public Desire Colette Boots In Beige Faux Suede 39.99
She is excellent as a crazed super villain and former psychiatrist. Funny, crazy, scary... You
can't come up with enough adjectives to describe all the different things you see her do.
The film is scheduled to be released on August 5, 2016 in 2D, 3D, and IMAX 3D and stars
Will Smith, Joel Kinnaman, Margot Robbie, Jared Leto, Jai Courtney and Cara Delevinge.
Also out now with a strong female character is Regression, which stars our English rose
Emma Watson. She plays her American role fantastically in this chilling thriller. Set in
1990, a young girl tells the story of being sexually abused by her father. Thus, begins the
disturbing tale of a father and daughter torn apart, thrown into the centre of a conspiracy
that shocks the nation.

Kitsch, quirky, girly..

Stepford Sinners - A Womenswear Collection Designed and Hand-made by Graduate Fashion Designer, Jessica Leigh Wall.
Based on the 1950s image of perfection, with much detail to print and textiles this Tongue and Cheek concept trends a
sense of spiteful sarcasm in the sweetest visually way possible, for a fresh Summer 16 Kitsch Collection.

How old are you? 24. (23 years, 11 months

and 5 days to be precise) What design experience have you had? 4 months digital
website designer. 12 months placement for womenswear fashion and print designing at Matalan
head office. What is your design style?
Kitsch, quirky, girly and most of all fun! think of
playing with your barbie dolls when you were
younger, my memories had a super girly essence
and involved a great deal of fun, creating my own
dreams, destines with a sweet yet sassy style.
What do you specialise in? I specialise in fashion designing, with a great involvement in textile print designing and a major love for hand made embellishments and sequin
appliqus. What inspires your work? I have many inspirations to helps shape my
work, I look at many designers, my top favourites would be; Agatha Ruiz de la Prada, Betsy
Johnson, Moschino, VFiles, Wildfox and many more. As for other inspirations I love stylist
and photographers; Nadia Lee Cohen & Riya Hollings. Many inspirations are from the 50s,
my all time favourite era, icons and body silhouette; however any image that may inspire me
from colour palettes, places or people can help shape my current mood and creation at the
time. I love anything remotely quirky, colourful and vintage. What would you like to
achieve in the long term? I would like to work for a company brand with involvement
in hand making embellishments or designing prints for example; Cliopeppiatt. Eventually I
would like to kick start my own personal online brand, with hopes and goals to progress it
further. Where can people access or see your work? My work can currently be
viewed on social networking sites; Instagram: JESSICALEIGHWALL. vogue.com where my
final graduate collection wasphotographed at London Graduate Fashion Week 2015. Arts
Thread: Jessica Leigh Wall http://www.artsthread.com/profile/jessicaleighwall/ Where my
portfolio, videos and designs can be viewed.
I am currently undergoing my new collection which will be able to view and buy online SS16.
This is exciting and all designed, brand made and funded by myself. Ive been unfortunate
finding work opportunities after graduating from university. I did receive 2 job offers which
meant moving away; at the time I had no money to move as I was paying back money
that helped me get to LGFW 2015, having to miss these opportunities left me deflated,
upset and angry, Ive attended interviews, applied for over 30 design jobs, and still have no
designing job. It is all the knock-backs and missed opportunities that has helped driven me
to make my own small collection.
