Transport in Plants

1. Fig. 3.1 shows the apparatus used to investigate how the rate of photosynthesis varies with light
intensity.

Bubbles of gas are given off as the plant photosynthesises. The number of bubbles given off in a time of 20
seconds is counted. The distance d, between the lamp and the plant, is changed and the experiment is
repeated.
Fig. 3.2 shows the results of the investigation.

(b) From Fig.9.1 give the letter that identifies cells that carry out the process named in (a)(i).

(c) (i) From Fig.9.1 give the letter that identifies a place where gas exchange with the atmosphere occurs.

(ii) Name the structure through which this gas exchange takes place.

3. Fig. 5.1 shows a seedling with its roots in a coloured dye solution. The dye travels slowly up the
stem to the leaves.

(a) After four hours, a section of one of the leaves is examined under a microscope.
Fig. 5.2 shows the section as seen under the microscope.

Examiner Report
Question 1
(a) A large number of candidates identified the gas correctly as oxygen.
(b) The graph was plotted correctly by the vast majority of the candidates but only a small number of
candidates drew a smooth curve through the points.
(c) Many candidates could derive the relationship between the rate of photosynthesis and the distance of
the lamp from the water plant from the data given in the question.
(d) A large number of candidates recognised that few water plants grow at depths greater than 20m
because of the lack of light at these depths. Credit was not given to those candidates, who thought that
there was also a lack of oxygen or carbon dioxide at these depths.

Question 2

(a) Candidates appeared unfamiliar with the diagram and were unable to name the tissue through which
water is carried through the leaf.
(b) The two tissues were not well known and it appeared that many candidates were using guesswork.
(c) Only a small number of candidates recognised that the process by which water is lost from the leaf is
transpiration.

Question 3

(a)(i) A large number of candidates could draw the reflected ray.

(ii) Only the best candidates were able to position the image correctly. A large number of candidates
thought that the image was on the surface of the mirror.
(b) A majority of the candidates correctly calculated the angle of incidence but only a small proportion of the
candidates identified angle B as the angle of refraction. Angle B was most commonly identified as the
angle of reflection. Candidates should be aware of the difference between refraction and reflection.
