theearlysummerof2011.Thethirdeditionhasbeenrewrittentoincludenewprocesssafety
technology,newreferences,andupdateddatathathaveappearedsincethefirsteditionwas
publishedin1990andthesecondeditionin2002.
Thethirdeditioncontainstwonewchapters.Chapter8,ChemicalReactivity,wasaddeddue
totherecommendationsfromtheU.S.ChemicalSafetyBoard(CSB)asaresultoftheT2
Laboratoriesaccidentinvestigation.Chapter13,SafetyProceduresandDesigns,wasadded
toconsolidatesomematerialthatwasscatteredthroughoutthepreviouseditionsandto
presentamorecompleteanddetaileddiscussion.
Thispaperwillpresentanhistoricalperspectiveonthistextbook,presentouroriginal
objectivesforthistextbook,anddiscusssomeofthedifficultiesinpublishingafirsttimetext
inthisarea.Italsoincludesourcombinedexperiencesofteachingprocesssafetyinboth
industryandacademiaduringthepast20years.
