telecommunications network.
Information Technology Services (ITS) provides a range of IT services and support to the RMIT community. The
services provided across the RMIT community vary in diversity and complexity, and include helpdesk and desktop
support, ITS training, application support, computing facilities management and maintenance, project management
and consulting services.

ITS is focused on proactively supporting RMIT by facilitating the effective use of ICT for the delivery of high quality
teaching, learning, research, academic and administrative activities. In the information age, ITS recognises the
important role that ICT services has in supporting RMIT's core business processes.
The Network Engineer role is within ITS Infrastructure Delivery organisation.
Position Summary
The primary function of the Network Engineer is to provide services to support the efficient delivery of RMITs data,
wireless and voice networks ensuring high availability, optimal performance, robustness and security. The Network
infrastructure provides data, voice and wireless networks to 70,000+ students and 6,000+ staff and is currently
undergoing an extensive upgrade.
The role will manage the data networking service by developing and maintaining future feature releases, resolving
complex issues, leading change processes and managing the lifecycle communication activities. The role will act
as the subject matter expert, establishing and maintaining constructive relationships with customers and staff with
high level of service, proactive responsive and consistent delivery of high quality service.

Key Accountabilities

Deliver timely and responsive operational Data Networking services covering but not limited to Avaya, HP
& Cisco switches, Cisco routers, Juniper & HP wireless LAN system.

Develop, maintain and act upon a clearly defined Data Networking service including future feature
releases, systemic problem resolution and lifecycle management activities undertaking ongoing unified
communications monitoring using sophisticated systems, and maintain professional support and change
processes.

Be responsible for lifecycle management of the Data Networking infrastructure contributing to new
hardware design and implementation.

Develop business cases, status reports and work requests as required.

Design documentation development of technical designs and associated documentation as appropriate.

Implement, monitor and audit Data Networking security in conjunction with more senior security staff.

Prepare and maintain documentation, configurations and changes in accordance with procedural
requirements and update documentation in a current format at all times.

Undertake network related project work.

Work closely with Operations Team staff and other Infrastructure Delivery staff to deliver customer focused
services.

Key Selection Criteria


Essential
1.

Demonstrated experience in the installation and maintenance of Avaya, HP & Cisco switches, Cisco routers,
Juniper & HP wireless LAN system, providing 24x7 operations in a large corporate environment.

2.

Demonstrated experienced in management and monitoring tools such as HP IMC.

3.

Highly experienced in the troubleshooting of wireless issues on all wireless devices including BYOD.

4.

Exposure to process based service delivery frameworks, such as ITIL.

5.

Excellent knowledge of contemporary and up-coming improvements in areas including Data Networking and
other components.

6.

Proven ability to write reports and maintain systems and related technical documentation in accordance with
procedural requirements.

7.

Ability to work with minimal supervision and follow procedures/instructions.

8.

Ability to work cooperatively within a team.

Desirable
1.

Knowledge in the implementation of Firewall rules on Checkpoint.

2.

Knowledge in the implementation, management and maintenance of Cisco ISE, Exinda, Infoblox, Netscaler
and Avaya IP Telephony.

3.

Ability to identify and rectify firewall related problems.

4.

Available to be rostered for 24 x 7 On-call duties.

Qualifications
Degree in computer science or a related discipline and/or equivalent industry experience supported by appropriate
industry certification
