Cest La Vie is not just a saying, its a mentality of human philosophy and

different people. Many people just follow and accept the unjust standards of
peoples relations as fixed and constant. Of course, there are many individuals who
try to change the world. These are the people who become leaders, and change life
for the better. These standards are made by us and can be manipulated for the
better. This can be shown in lots of forms, but this is a very big part of literature.
Characters and narrators fight Cest La Vie attitude throughout literature.
In the poem, Theme for English B by Langston Hughes shows resistance to
Cest La Vie for discrimination in a Harlem college. Langston implies the racism of
his instructor, and confronts it by suggesting the bias of the instructor towards
colored students. He directly compares this in the quote so will my page be colored
that I write, which confronts the merits of social racism. This comparison uses the
color of the paper to prove a point about skin color, and how it taints the work to
some readers. Langston also pointed out major difference of professionalism
towards colored people, and inequality in that respect. This is supported when he
wrote although you are older, white, and somewhat freer. Even they both are
Americans, he means he has less freedom because racist people do make him lose
opportunities and options in certain environments. In the poem, he also emphasizes
how people of different races have similar interests and activities. He said I guess
being colored does not make me not like the same thing other folks like who are
other races, which supports his claim that he rebels against the stereotype of
colored people. Similarly meaning, the quote is stating that people are not very
much different on the inside, so they should not be judged by their skin. The poem
English B is a great example of how literature is used to fight Cest La Vie.

The source Do Not Go Gentle Into That Goodnight by Dylan Thomas is a

poem that can be used to represent not accepting Cest La Vie. Dylan gives many
clues that he is advising the reader not to accept the state of death like most would.
In the poem, Dylan repeats do not go gentle into that goodnight. That means that
he not to easily go into an everlasting state of death, and to fight the standard and
try to live longer. On a more personal level for Dylans rebellion against Cest La Vie,
he tells his dad not to go gentle into a goodnight. This is stated in the quote my
fatherrage, rage against the dying of the light. He does not want his father to
die, and he is getting him to fight the restful instincts of most, and get his father to
stay. He states his defiant attitude towards death also, and his hate towards the
typicality of the occurrence. The disobedience is represented in the quote old age
should burn and rave at the close of day. This is contradicting towards a passive
attitude of death because he is saying how it should burn, and shows he is trying to
prove a rhetorical point of dislike. This specific piece of literature explain that
standards can be challenged very well this way.
The character Scout from the book To Kill a Mockingbird not validating of the
racial standards of her setting. Throughout the story, Scout is very supporting of
Tom and does not judge or challenge his claim like many other citizens of Maycomb.
She shows this when she decided to defend Tom at the prison from being attacked
by an angry mob. She shows her fight against Cest La Vie by defending a victim by
majority, and opposing the common racist. Scout is also very much a leader who
fights the standard because of her dissertation of race. She shows this in great
depth when she goes to the African American church with Calpurnia. All of the
people around her felt she was out of place, but Scout did not feel uncomfortable.
She just saw the African Americans as regular acquaintances which proves she is

fighting the racial standards at the time. Scout also stands up for her beliefs, and
her familys beliefs against other people. This is supported when Scout fights Francis
in school for basically accusing Atticus of being a black man lover, and being a
traitor to the white community. She is not upset at the fact that he is kind t colored
people, but because her schoolmates did not respect her or her family for what they
believed in. Scout fought Cest la vie in the book To Kill a Mockingbird in numerous
ways.
Literature can explain the many ways people can fight Cest la vie in stories
and other situations. The poem English B takes racial bias and conflicts the issue
with a school paper, and relates race to that. Do not go gentle into that goodnight
uses the example of a father to fight the action of going to sleep or dying and try to
keep living. Scout uses her good nature and background to fight racial issues in the
mid 1900s. All of this literature has a common theme and purpose and thats to
fight Cest la vie. To make this world better, we need people willing to fight the
normal and make our society better. Without this philosophy we are surely doomed
for corruption. Characters fight Cest la vie mentality in much of the worlds
literature.
