Pastor: Fr. Max Biltz

For those who did not attend Mass at St. Josephs or St. Michaels this past
weekend, Fr. Max spoke briefly prior to the final blessing. He told us he would be
leaving very soon to treat his insomnia that has worsened to the point that it interferes
with his priestly duties. He seeks treatment at the request of Bishop Kemme who feels
that Fr. Max cannot work to his full potential at present.
Insomniaweve all heard of it or have experienced it ourselves or someone we
know. It is the chronic inability to sleep. Those who experience it cant get going in the
morning, no matter how early they went to bed the night before. In addition, they often
nod off wherever they happen to be during the day! It can leave one with little energy.
This condition can have physical origins, such as a thyroid imbalance or side effects
from certain medications. There can also be psychological causes such as depression or
some type of anxiety. Fathers doctors goal is to find the cause and treat it.
Fr. Max has been forthright with us. He told us of his family, his education, and the
jobs hes held prior to going to seminary. He told us of his great love for the Old
Testament and Latin. He specialized in Hebrew Scripture and wrote his masters thesis
on the Israelite belief in the afterlife. He joked that he spent four years studying
theology with his highpoint being an 80 page work on dead people! I say this because
his intense thirst for reading, no doubt, invaded his sleeping time, for he admitted that
he often gets to bed very late.
Father was given a large responsibility to manage two parisheshis first attempt at
such an endeavor. His weekend masses are well attended and Ive heard many state that
they enjoy his homilies and learn from them. Ive admired Fathers dedication to
education both with PSR religion classes and also his encouragement to adults to learn
more about the saints and other church teachings.
I received a call from Doris Brand in Wichita, Fr. John Reinkemeyers longtime
secretary. She told me that Fr. Maxs Grandma Julia, also of Wichita, said that she
enjoys our bulletin, for it allows her to read of her grandsons priestly work. Perhaps his
grandmother will see more of him in the coming months as he receives treatment.
Youre in our prayers, Fr. Max, for a return to good health and to Southeast Kansas!
