tohowvendorstakevariousIPsthroughthedifferentstagesofdevelopment.
WhenwetalkaboutavendorlicensinganARMIP(CPUforexample),thisgenerallymeansthattheyare
takingtheRTL(RegisterTransferLevel)designofanIP.TheRTLisjustalogicalrepresentationofthe
functioningofablock,andtogettofromthisformtoonethatcanbeimplementedintoactualsiliconrequires
differentdevelopmentphaseswhichisgenerallyreferredtoasthephysicalimplementationpartof
semiconductordevelopment.
It'sherewhereARM'sPOPIP(Whichbythewayisnotanacronym)comesintoplay:Roughlyspeaking,
POPIPisasetoftoolsandresourcesthatarecreatedbyARMtoaccelerateandfacilitatethe
implementationpartofSoCdevelopment.Thisincludesstandardcelllibraries,memorycompilers,timing
benchmarks,processoptimizeddesignchangesandingeneralimplementationknowledgethatARMisable
toamassduringtheIPblockdevelopmentphase.

called28HPCUforARM'sCortexA7andCortexA53cores.Theacronymhasadualmeaningstandingfor
28nmHighPerformanceCompact"UMC"or"UltraLowIDDQ"withIDDQbeingtheleakagecurrentwhichis
beingdescribesasbeingconsiderablylowerthanUMC'sfirstgeneration28nmHKMGprocessandableto
givesignificantbatterylifeimprovementstodevices.
WhileARMisn'tabletodisclosewhichvendorsusePOPIP,theystatethatthemaintargetislowcostAsian
market,whichmostlikelymeansvariousChinesevendors.AccordingtoS.C.Chien,vicepresident,corporate
