Concert tour of Slovenia

25-29 June 2013
Concert 1
Ursuline Church
Slovenska cesta 21
Ljubljana

Description: Ljubljana is the capital of Slovenia and lies between Vienna and Venice, at a crossroads of
important transport routes from northern Europe to the Adriatic sea and from western to eastern Europe
and further onto the Balkans. Ljubljana was the centre of the Slovenian Reformation movement. In 1701
the Academia philharmonicorum institution was founded and the members of its successor, the
Philharmonic Society, included the violinist Niccolo Paganini and composers Josef Haydn and Ludwig
van Beethoven. The Ursuline church is a beautiful Italian baroque church belonging to Ursuline Convent
which was built between 1718 and 1726. It is known for its faade of six great columns and gable, and
contains a huge altar built of African marble, designed by Italian Baroque artist Francesco Robba. The
original bell tower was destroyed in an earthquake in 1895, and rebuilt in the 1900s.

CONCERT 2
St Georges Cathedral
Ulica IX. Korpusa 25
6330 Piran

Description: The picturesque medieval town of Piran was built on the tip of a small peninsula reaching
far into the sea at the northwestern most point of the Istrian peninsula. Piran is one of the oldest towns
in Slovenia. The major source of the towns prosperity at that time was the production and sale of salt
produced from the nearby saltpans. The church complex atop the hill above Piran consists of the parish
church of St George, the bell tower, the baptistery of St John the Baptist and the priests house. Since the
sixteenth century both sides of the hill has been reinforced with arches that beautifully underline the
dominance of the church complex. The present day complex of the parish church of St.George was built
at the end of the sixteenth century and due to its uniqueness and quality the Baroque church complex
has been declared a monument of national importance.

and by the fourteenth century had grown into an important market town as a result of trade on the river
and the nearby iron forgeries. St Peters serves as a typical example of a Late Gothic church, which were
built in the fifteenth century following examples from the south of Germany. Typically, the central nave is
not separated from the aisles with passages and all are the same height. Three pairs of octagonal
columns support a ribbed vaulting made up of eight-pointed stars. The high altar dates back to the
eighteenth century and is hewn from black marble, in keeping with Venetian examples.
