Evaluation Question 1: In what ways does your media product

use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media

product? (i.e. of film openings)
Setting/ Locations:
In out film there are two different locations that we used. One was the
outside of the house
that is in a quiet residential area
and the other
setting is inside of the house. The
setting of our film is not a typical
place where a thriller film would
normally be located as the location
is not a place, which would normally
be classed as scary or eerie. For my
production our production we decided
to use my house, which is in a quiet
residential area.

The first shot that is shown is an

establishing shot, which lets the
audience see the location, and they
will also feel like the film is at a
state of equilibrium because of the
normal setting. However the next shot
is inside the house and the lighting
that is used is low-key lighting to
show things are not as normal as
shown in the first shot of the film.
The shot then shows the antagonists
house and it has pictures of his wife and it also appears that he is a
normal person living a normal life. Then it shows a wide shot which shows
the antagonist outside of his house. We then use low key lighting from
inside of the car to show that things are taking a turn for the worst as
the antagonist looks worried after he hears bangs coming from the back of
his car. He goes to the back of the and again low key lighting is used to
show a person inside the boot of his car which looks cramped and dark to
reveal the true identity and ideas of the antagonist.
Title of film
The title of our film is missing; this
suits for a title for the thriller genre.
This is because it tells people that
something is not normal and it also sounds
like a kidnapping has taken place. I took
inspiration from films like hostage as the
film tells you in the title what has
happened just like in my film I have told
viewers that someone has gone missing.

Also missing also sets a eerie town as this is something which makes
things unnerving.
Fonts used
The font that was used in our production is a typical clear font of Arial.
The colour of our title is black and white with a glowing black light
behind the font. A typical colour for font is red as this connotes blood
that relates to a thriller/ horror genre. This also connotes danger and it
makes the audience feel uneasy even before the film starts.
We however did not use a red font, as our film is not as gory or bloody as
other horror films. We used the black background so our title stands out.
Costume and props
In the first scene the antagonist is
wearing a dark blue jumper with an
American flag on it while he is also
wearing jeans. This is a normal clothes,
which doesnt make the audience feel
scared of the antagonist. This costume
was used on purpose so he didnt look
like a suspicious criminal.
Then we used the prop of car keys as he
needs these to go into the car. We also used a car as a prop. We had a
choice of two different cars but the other car had driving instructor
logos all over it so it prevented the film looking as realistic as it
does.
Camerawork
Our

film uses many different shots. The shots

range from establishing shots, close-ups,
extreme
close-ups,
etc.
As
I
was
the
cinematographer, I used a range of different
shots to make the film better.
The
first
shot
that
I
took
was
an
establishing shot which showed the house
where the antagonist lived.

There are some point of view shots in our film so the people can see what
the antagonist is looking at. We used this to show that he was frightened
when he heard the banging noises but then we revealed that he was the
kidnapper which meant that the reveal of a plot twist would be more
effective.
Editing and sound
Editing and sound was done by my partner and he used good colours for the
titles. Editing was an important part of the process to making a film.
This is because without editing there would be just a bunch of random
clips which do not make sense. So after viewing the film I assessed that
the film was well edited as most

We found sound online using a free sound download so we got sound legally.
We got sounds such as birds tweeting and other sounds such as tense music
when we find a knife in the back of the car with someone in the car.
How are the characters introduced?
The first character that is introduced in the film is the antagonist
although he is made out to look like the protagonist. He is shown by
looking into his computer and looking for houses and this straight away
comes up with questions of who is this man and why is he looking for
houses.
The protagonist is shown to the audience as a shock as she suddenly
appears in the boot of the car which the antagonist was preparing to
drive.
Genre and how the opening sequence suggests it
Our film follows the similar codes and conventions to real thriller films
such as Hostage (2005), for example the film starts off with calm music
and then has tense music.
Also in both film establishing shots show a calm atmosphere which soon
turns sinister.
