After two great chapter meetings where plenty of ideas were shared along with rousing debates on few

topics, now it’s time to turn those ideas into action!

We, at GiveIndia, brainstormed on the activities that the Mumbai chapter could undertake and decided
that a self-driven, fundraising model was the way to go in order to provide every volunteer an opportunity
to contribute in various ways.

What is a Fundraising Model?

Fundraising is the process that the Mumbai chapter would use to secure the financial resources it needs
to implement its goal (a project) of supporting the beneficiaries of a non-profit organization in & around
Mumbai.

For example: GiveIndia is a fund-raising organization for multiple non-profits which are listed on its
website. Similarly, in line with this concept, the Mumbai Chapter would be a self-driven fundraising
organization supporting only ONE non-profit organization.

Mumbai Chapter Fundraising Activities Project Beneficiaries

The various benefits of this model are -

 A definite goal to work towards – a project

 Identification with a particular cause – Education, Health, Environment, etc.
 Clarity with regards to monetary targets – Rs. 3 – 5L
 Linkage to a pre-decided outcome – Impact can be defined earlier & measured at the end
 Promote the culture of giving
 Help raise awareness of the NGO & the Mumbai Chapter

What is a Project?

A project essentially is a need defined by the NGO, much bigger and substantial in scope as well as
impact; such as

1) Mumbai Mobile Creches – Mumbai, Maharashtra (Need – Rs. 4.5Lac):

This project seeks to improve the infrastructure across 26 day care centres on construction sites
which support 6000 children in Mumbai, Navi Mumbai and Thane to be safe, healthy and
educated. www.mumbaimobilecreches.org & www.youtube.com/mumbaimobilecreches

2) National Rural Research and Development Association (NARAD) – Thane District,

Maharashtra (Need – Rs. 5Lac):
This project seeks to drive the water scarcity problem during summer in villages of Jawhar Block
by recharging old water sources like pond ,spring and construcing new drinking well, will also
undertake old well repairing- plastering the foundation where the water leakages are present and
Bore well which are in dead condition but have vast water storage. www.narad.org

GiveIndia would provide a list of 8-10 existing and needy projects in the causes of Education, Health,
Women, Disability, Livelihood & Environment.

This would be presented at the chapter meeting and the Mumbai chapter volunteers would pick ONE
project and raise funds for the same in the next 6-12 months.

What are Fundraising activities?

Fundraising activities can be done in a number of ways: individual donations, corporate donations, sale of
merchandise (T-shirts, calendars, mugs, greeting cards, etc.), fundraising dinners, Indian classical music
and dance concerts, popular music concerts and many others.

Key thing to remember is to keep the overhead minimum (GI would not be providing any kind of seed
money). A model could be to raise money for the cost of an event through sponsorships/paid-
advertisements & the revenue from ticket-sales/auctions etc would be funds raised towards the project.
Few examples are -

Community Auction

Sponsor a community auction at a building or a mall. Items can be donated by local individuals (e.g.
artists), stores, or organizations. Include some expensive items to attract buyers. Collecting the items or
services will take the most time.

Paid Advertisements

Local businesses can pay to advertise their goods and services in your newsletter or other project publications.
Promotion and solicitation is necessary to start this event. This can be combined with any other larger event that the
chapter plans.

Run, Walk, Cyclathon

MilesForSmiles - Individuals can pledge to do a 5K run/walk & raise Rs.200 per km.

How will it work?

This is essentially a Mumbai Chapter initiative, with GI mainly providing assistance with respect to
information about projects, NGO contacts and other related support. The purpose is not fundraising for
GI, but for the NGO whose project we are selecting. All fund-raising activities chosen MUST be approved
by the GiveIndia co-ordinator to ensure that it is in line with the core values of GiveIndia.

There would be 2 chapter co-ordinators identified (one from the Mumbai chapter volunteers & one from
GiveIndia). Focus groups of 2 ppl each for the different aspects of fund-raising activities could be formed,
for example: the concept group, PR group, Sponsorship group, NGO liaison group etc.

GiveIndia would help in providing contacts, already existing posters etc., but would not be responsible for
any execution related to it. The chapter volunteers are primarily responsible for the execution &
supporting the project in its entirety.
What is in it for me as a volunteer?
A fundraising initiative provides an excellent opportunity for people with unique talents to apply
themselves for the betterment of society. There is enough freedom to choose an activity that is personally
interesting and just the right amount of constraints to ensure that the larger picture is always in focus.

It also presents a chance to interact with NGOs and gain an understanding of grassroots issues. An
actual visit to the parent NGO of the chosen project will be insightful and motivating.

The Mumbai Chapter doubles up as a platform to brainstorm, share ideas and work closely with like-
minded people who are together for the purpose of making a difference in the lives of those not as
empowered as us.

How will GiveIndia support you?

GiveIndia will provide support in various ways to you:
 GiveIndia will provide you few projects in Mumbai which have undergone due diligence in the 3-
5L range from which you can select one project. These projects and NGOs pass the stringent
criteria of GiveIndia and are credible and transparent
 GiveIndia will monitor these projects and provide 2 feedback reports which will detail the
utilization of the funds and ensure they have been used for the purpose mentioned upfront
 One of the co-ordinators of the Chapter will from from GiveIndia and will provide your
interace/liasion with GiveIndia
 GiveIndia will help you to think through on how you can select a project to raise funds for
 We will help you with ideas for your fundraising drives and help think through such activities
 In case you need operational support in terms of a payment gateway for people making online
donations or providing them with receipts, we will make it possible
 Any EXISTING collateral in the form of posters, brochures etc.

We also want to clearly demarcate the roles and responsibility of the Chapter vis-a-vis GiveIndia so there
are a few things we will not be able to provide purely on account of bandwidth constraint
 We will not be able to design new brochures and posters for you
 We will not be able to provide you with any contacts
 GiveIndia will not be able to provide execution support apart from what we’ve specified above

The Chapter has full freedom in deciding what project to raise funds for and how to raise these funds and
will have complete ownership over its activities. GiveIndia is merely a facilitator in this entire activity
bringing together like-minded individuals with a passion to change lives. 

So, come join us on this joyful ride and help transform lives of people in need. Here’s your chance
to make a real difference to the world!
