by Gen.Assembly
18 members to be elected
for 3-yr.term
1 representative/member

Non-permanent members to
be elected for 2-yr. term.

FUNCTIONS &
POWERS

-discuss any questions within the


scope of the present Charter
-make recommendations to UN
members or to the Sec.Council
-discuss questions re: maintenance
of intl peace and security
-call attention of the Sec.Council to
situations likely to endanger intl
peace and security.
-initiate studies and make
recommendations for promoting
intl cooperation in political,
economic, social, cultural,
educational and health fields.
-receive and consider reports from
other organs
-perform functions relating to intl
trusteeship system and approval of
trusteeship agreements.
-approve budget of the Org.

-To ensure prompt and


effective action by UN, it
shall have primary
responsibility for the
maintenance of intl peace and
security
-submit annual reports to
Gen.Assembly
-call upon the parties to settle
disputes thru negotiation,
mediation, conciliation, etc.
-investigate dispute which
might lead to international
friction
-determine the existence of
any threat to peace
-make recommendations to
maintain or restore intl peace
-plan for the application of
armed force with the
assistance of Military Staff
Committee

-make studies and reports


regarding intl economic,
social, education, health,
and related matters
-make recommendations for
promoting human rights
and fundamental freedoms
-enter into agreement with
other agencies (specialized
agencies)
-furnish information to the
Sec.Council
-may perform services at
the request of the members
of UN, with the approval of
Gen. Assembly

Consist of:
-members administering trust
territories
-permanent members of Sec.
Council not administering
trust territories
-other members elected for 3yr terms by the Gen.
Assembly as may be
necessary to ensure that the
total number of members of
is equally divided between
members of UN which
administer trust territories
and those which do not
-consider reports submitted
by administering authority
-accept petitions in
consultation with the
administering authority
-provide periodic visits to
respective trust territories
-formulate questionnaire on
political, economic, social
and educational advancement
of trust territories

All members of
UN are ipso
facto parties to
the Statute of
ICJ

Secretary General
and other staff as
the Org. may
require
