“Method of Performing a task Achievement mechanism”, is the 68th chapter in
Thirukkural. This chapter comprising of 10 couplets, suggests the ways and means of
achieving or performing tasks one takes up or is assigned.
The three dimensions of a tasks a pefformaer has to look into and be clear about are
the Obstacles, Risks( idaiuorum)
End (Mudivum) and
Benefits (Padupayanum) besides the task ( seyal) itself.
Mudivum, idaiuorum mutriyangu eidhum
Padupayanum parthuchcheayl 676
When one engages in a task or strives for attaining a goal, he should have clear idea
about the three dimensions of his task or goal as advised by Thiruvalluvar. They are, the
obstacles that may arise while taking up that job or proceeding towards the goal; the
risks involved in overcoming the obstacles and the out come of his efforts in overcoming
the obstacles as well as in achieving the goal.
When a task has to be taken up one has to gather and assemble all the necessary
resources, tools and means for the accomplishment of the task. As the means and
sources are scarce, he has to meet many obstacles, right from procuring the resources,
securing the tools and equipments down to organising them in the required proportion.
These obstacles could be overcome by proper planning and optimum allocation of
resources which requires a clear understanding. It is quite obvious that only deep
knowledge, proper understanding, clear idea and adequate experience would make this
simple and easy. The succes of any accomplsihment depends not on the efforts taken
but it depends on the result one gets. So, while planning and allocating resources and
organising the activities one should be clear about where his efforts are going to end,
i.e., the ultimate result or benefit he may derive out of his efforts. Thus it is clear to attain
the desired result (peak performance) the executive or the leader should have a clear
idea about the three dimensions of the task besides the task itself.
