Chase mystery still puzzling people today

By Andy Duffy
Weekly Voice

CHASE It may not be fodder for a big-time television production, but the unincorporated
community of Chase has an
unsolved mystery of its own.
Much of the town burned one
spring night in 1892. According
to old documents, investigators
believed an arsonist started the
blaze. Investigators thought
someone intentionally left a
candle burning on flammable
material.
The mystery features two
prime suspects, one with no alibi but no motive, and the other
with a motive and an alibi.
Today, the community of
Chase is a cluster of homes and
businesses sitting astride U.S.
10 in 35.6 square mile Chase
Township. According to the 2010
census, the entire township had
a population of 1,137.
Woods and farm fields surround the community. Hunters
walk among towering, oak-tree
covered ridges in the fall in
quests to shoot a few squirrels.
Trout fishermen slip along
the nearby Middle Branch of
the Pere Marquette River. In
the fall, wandering salmon occasionally make it that far up
the river and probably cause
consternation among the population of resident brown trout.
Come firearm deer season,
orange-coated hunters frequent
the deer blinds that dot the
woods and fields. The occasional towering white pine is a
throwback to another era.
Things were quite different
during the second half of the
19th century.
By the 1870s, logging camps
were springing up near Chase.
According to some reports,
logging began in earnest in
Michigan in the 1830s. It was
concentrated, though, near
navigable rivers.
The Pere Marquette near
Chase was too small to permit
log floats. Logging activity
there began in earnest when
the railroad arrived in the early
1870s.
Suddenly, a number of logging camps sprang up. Chase
boomed. It soon boasted a popu-

and still stands in the community today.
lation of more than a thousand.
On weekends, when the loggers
in the surrounding camps came
to town, the population regularly swelled to more than 5,000.
Lake County historian
Shanna Avery, who has written
extensively on the area, said
Michigans logging industry
reached its peak in about 1880.
By the 1890s as the state was
logged off, the number of people
employed by logging was starting to dwindle.
Then came the night of April
27, 1892.
A fire started in a downtown
business. Townsfolk quickly
decided the blaze had been set
intentionally. They blamed a
candle left burning on flammable material.
The blaze was noteworthy
for the amount of damage
it caused. Area newspapers
reported 25 buildings on the
towns main street (now U.S.
10) including every business in
town and the fire destroyed five
homes.
Attempts to fight the fire were
hampered by strong winds.
Accounts claim erratic winds
blew from three different compass points as crews fought the
flames.

As soon as the inferno was

contained, people began wondering who the arsonist was.
At first, attention was focused
on a townsman named Zimmerman Ross. He operated a drug
store for an absentee owner of
the building. According to reports, hed had a liquor license
rejected shortly before the day
of the fire. Thus he had a motive for setting the fire: revenge
for the rejected liquor license
application.
The village council members,
in fact, passed a resolution during a special meeting the following evening, stating the council
affirmed to the best of our
knowledge and belief (Ross) did
so burn said building.
Although Ross was the object
of much suspicion, but there
wasnt much evidence against
him, Avery said. Among the
points brought up in his defense
was he had nothing to gain. The
business was insured for $600,
but the policy was payable to
the owner of the building.
Suspicion soon shifted to
prominent townsman Dr.
George Field. Ross was trying
to compete with Field for the
towns pharmaceutical business. Some suspected Field

started the fire to put the competitor out of business. If he

did, the fire came at a loss to
him. He lost his home, drug
store and barn in the fire. His
losses were estimated at $3,000.
Besides, Field had an alibi. He
claimed he was in Nirvana at
the time of the fire, and witnesses verified his story.
So the once-thriving village was brought to its knees.
Nobody was ever brought to
justice, and the crime remains
unsolved to this day.
Some echoes, people say, last
forever. The echo of that 1892
fire lingers in Chase today. The
dearth of old business structures along the highway and the
lack of Victorian-era homes in
the former logging community
tell the story of that long-ago
disaster.
And this spring during a quiet
evening as a trout fisherman
eases his way along the Middle
Branch of the Pere Marquette
River, the faint rustlings he
hears may not be leaves shimmying in the gentle breezes
of spring. They could be faint
echoes of the roaring inferno
that consumed the village of
Chase nearly a century and a
quarter ago.

Osceola Commission on Aging may seek more funding

By Andy Duffy
Weekly Voice

REED CITY The demand for

services is simply outpacing the
organizations funding according to Scott Schryer, the director
of Osceola Countys Commission on Aging,
There are 5,500 seniors in the
county as of the 2010 census.
Schryer said. We are serving
650 of them.

Schryer asked the commissioners to consider asking the taxpayers for an additional .2 mills
this August.
Commissioners will see proposed ballot language at the
April 19 and will decide then
whether to take the request to
the voters.
If the proposal makes the ballot and voters approve it, Schryer
anticipates the COA will receive
an additional $135,000 in fund-

ing.
State law allows commissions
on aging to levy up to 1 mill in
taxes. Osceola County currently
levies .8 mills for the commission.
Schryer said the COAs staff
and administration are already
in place, so the additional funds
will all go to provide services.
Without additional revenue,
the COA will probably have to
begin rationing services.

Waiting lists are not unheard

of. They are happening around
the state. I will hate to pick up
the phone and tell a caller I will
put him on a waiting list, Schryer said.
The COA millage rate hasnt
increased sine 1986.
The agency has a total budget
of more than $1 million. About
35 percent of its budget comes
from federal and state grants.
Roughly 11 percent comes from

program income including donations and fund raising activities.

Two percent comes from reimbursement for services from the
Department of Veterans Affairs.
Millage funding accounts for
slightly more than half of the
commissions current funding.
The COA provides home-delivered meals for shut-ins and other
in-home services. It also provides other services for county
residents 60 and older.

What WAS it?

If our Northern Michigan snow should

happen to pause for spring anytime soon,
that three-legged orange machine could
come in quite handy.
When the white melts exposing a winters worth of downed tree limbs and yard
debris, the electric chipper reduces the
toil of cleanup.
Small to medium sized branches as well
as leaves destined for mulch, are fed into
the teeth via the large black opening at
the top. Spit out below are the chopped

small particles which can in turn be converted to a moisture barrier to surround

tree trunks; smaller, easier-to-discard,
readily bag-able debris; or pure organic
leaf dander which can be rototilled into
the veggie garden or flowerbeds.
Here are the people who contacted us
with the correct answer and will get an
entry in the prize drawing on June 30:

for that work. At the front
of the teachers desk are
located the recitation
seats, and back of these
are the usual seatings.
Under the whole building is a nicely constructed basement nearly eight
feet deep with cement
floor and pointed stone
wall. Here is located the
furnace and boiler with
which the house is heated
with steam from radiators placed in convenient
places. That part of the
basement not occupied
by the heating plant will
be finished off for a dining room to be used by
the schoolchildren. The
entire basement is perfectly heated, lighted and
ventilated.
Another important
matter that has not been
overlooked is that the
outhouses have been constructed with the same
care devoted to the main
building, and the district
proposes to grade the

grounds and plant trees

as soon as spring opens,
so that the surroundings
will be in full harmony
with the buildings.
We have gone into many particulars in description of this model school
house gleaned from specification procured for us
by Commissioner James
H. Thompson, hoping that
others may be induced to
be inspired to give better
attention to their school
properties.
The buildings above
described cost in round
numbers $1800, as follows: Brick for school
house $120; contract price
$1147.50; extras $50; bell
$19; inside painting and
finish $67.45; steam heat
$250; brick outbuildings
$120; total $1773.95. The
district began to prepare
for building in 1897, when
it was voted to raise $200
as a sinking fund, and
for two years this was
repeated, until the fund

amounted to $600, then

the sum of $300 was voted
and the school board was
authorized to build a
school house, which was
done last year. Stephen
Allen, of LeRoy, was the
contractor.
The district has a
school census of 98, and
an attendance last year of
65. Its present officers are
Raymond E. McLaughlin,
director; Louis Talstad,
moderator; Ed C. Allen, assessor. Miss Ellen
Noggle, daughter of Geo.
F. Noggle of Sherman
Township, is teacher, and
is one of the most capable
and competent in the
county.
Hon. Delos Fall, Superintendent of Public Instruction, who is deeply
interested in rural school
matters, will appoint a
State teachers Institute
to be held in the new
school house sometime
during the month of
April.
