As a person looks down U.S. 10 in Chase, the absence of old buildings is striking. Much of the village was destroyed in an 1892 fire.

CHASE It may not be fodder for a big-time television production, but the unincorporated
community of Chase has an
unsolved mystery of its own.
Much of the town burned one
spring night in 1892. According
to old documents, investigators
believed an arsonist started the
blaze. Investigators thought
someone intentionally left a
candle burning on flammable
material.
The mystery features two
prime suspects, one with no alibi but no motive, and the other
with a motive and an alibi.
Today, the community of
Chase is a cluster of homes and
businesses sitting astride U.S.
10 in 35.6 square mile Chase
Township. According to the 2010
census, the entire township had
a population of 1,137.
Woods and farm fields surround the community. Hunters
walk among towering, oak-tree
covered ridges in the fall in
quests to shoot a few squirrels.
Trout fishermen slip along
the nearby Middle Branch of
the Pere Marquette River. In
the fall, wandering salmon occasionally make it that far up
the river and probably cause
consternation among the population of resident brown trout.
Come firearm deer season,
orange-coated hunters frequent
the deer blinds that dot the
woods and fields. The occasional towering white pine is a
throwback to another era.
Things were quite different
during the second half of the
19th century.
By the 1870s, logging camps
were springing up near Chase.
According to some reports,
logging began in earnest in
Michigan in the 1830s. It was
concentrated, though, near
navigable rivers.
The Pere Marquette near
Chase was too small to permit
log floats. Logging activity
there began in earnest when
the railroad arrived in the early
1870s.
Suddenly, a number of logging camps sprang up. Chase
boomed. It soon boasted a popu-

and still stands in the community today.
lation of more than a thousand.
On weekends, when the loggers
in the surrounding camps came
to town, the population regularly swelled to more than 5,000.
Lake County historian
Shanna Avery, who has written
extensively on the area, said
Michigans logging industry
reached its peak in about 1880.
By the 1890s as the state was
logged off, the number of people
employed by logging was starting to dwindle.
Then came the night of April
27, 1892.
A fire started in a downtown
business. Townsfolk quickly
decided the blaze had been set
intentionally. They blamed a
candle left burning on flammable material.
The blaze was noteworthy
for the amount of damage
it caused. Area newspapers
reported 25 buildings on the
towns main street (now U.S.
10) including every business in
town and the fire destroyed five
homes.
Attempts to fight the fire were
hampered by strong winds.
Accounts claim erratic winds
blew from three different compass points as crews fought the
flames.
Schryer asked the commissioners to consider asking the taxpayers for an additional .2 mills
this August.
Commissioners will see proposed ballot language at the
April 19 and will decide then
whether to take the request to
the voters.
If the proposal makes the ballot and voters approve it, Schryer
anticipates the COA will receive
an additional $135,000 in fund-
ing.
State law allows commissions
on aging to levy up to 1 mill in
taxes. Osceola County currently
levies .8 mills for the commission.
Schryer said the COAs staff
and administration are already
in place, so the additional funds
will all go to provide services.
Without additional revenue,
the COA will probably have to
begin rationing services.
