Vincent brought a pair of coveralls for William.
When he was no longer indecently exposed, and had
paid the fine, we decided the first thing was to go up and
see the Principessa about renting the rooms. It was a long
steep climb, taking us almost a half hour. Neither Karen
nor Bartlett had the right shoes for climbing La Coma's
cobbled streets. We were all out of breath by the time we
reached the rusted gate of the castle. There was a large
sign hanging askew from the gate which said: private
PROPERTY. ANYONE WHO ENTERS Wn.L BE SHOT.
A caretaker's house stood next to the gate, but it looked
as if it hadn't been Hved in for years. As we entered the
property we were lost in a tangle of weeds, wild growth,
rotted trees and stagnant pools of water. We followed a
twisted dirt road alternately full of rocks and deep holes.
The castle loomed up in front of us. It looked even
larger than it did from down below. The sides were covered with vines and moss. Around the castle was a moat.
The drawbridge to the large wooden door at the entrance
was down.
Karen stared and

then went back to the cafe. He was still sweating out his

Karen had met the village priest, who spoke a little
English. She decided to learn Italian so they made an
agreement. In exchange for his teaching her Italian,
Karen promised to teach the priest English.
When I heard about it, I offered to teach Karen ItaHan,
but Bartlett heard me make the offer and said it was
better for her to learn from the priest.
If I hadn't known Bartlett I would have thought he
was getting jealous.
Montecatini hung around for a few days and then decided to leave. He said he had investigated the theft of
our trunks and he had some suspects in mind.
"You don't need any suspects," Bartlett told him at
Vincent's cafe the morning Montecatini announced he
was going. "Mondello stole our trunks."
"A good policeman never jumps to conclusions,"
Montecatini lectured. "All we know is that Mondello
robbed you. But it is perfectly possible other bandits
robbed your friend. After all, he admits it was at night
and he didn't see their faces."

were tied to them and we started the long ride toward
Mondello's headquarters. The going was slow and Karen
complained her seat hurt. But we never stopped. It must
have taken us three hours to arrive at our destination.
Dawn was just coming up as we were helped off the
horses and the blindfolds were taken off our eyes. We
found ourselves high in a mountain clearing surrounded
by bushes six feet high. There was a cave in the mountainside and off to the left was a small corrugated hut. A
fire some twenty feet from the cave was blazing and
about ten men were sitting around it drinking coffee.

'
The next week was spent in preparations for the cigarette-smuggling operation. The Naples gang had sent a
speedy motorboat for Bartlett to use. He made Pietro his
crew member. Bardett held boat drills every day with a
stop watch as well as simulated loadings and unloadings.
He had each boat owner cut a panel in his boat just above
the water line and he ordered them to round up chains
which he had them clean and oil. Then he pretended he
was the contraband police and the fishermen had to dump
their cargoes of cigarettes through the hatch on the
chains they had gathered.
"Remember this," he told them. "If they don't find
cigarettes on board, they can't do anything to you."

"Why don't you clear out, William, and leave Bartlett

"Leave the boss here? What kind of a bum do you

the people work, they had money, they were happy. They

William was about to leave when Inspector Ruffino
