It is often useful to have a listing of the main composers of a
particular era. This list is of course not complete, and never will be. Some dates are speculative, and there may be disagreement in the sources, or new discoveries which change our knowledge. Period divisions can always be argued over, and differed from region to region. I would appreciate it if readers could email me to fill in any glaring omissions, or to correct an error. This list was originally compiled when I was teaching some years ago, and there might be some improvements necessary. Abbreviations: fl. flourished (ie. we don't know the dates, but this is when he/she was working) c. circa (about) Search tip: Use Ctrl + F or Find from your Edit menu to put in the composer's name or a particular date.
