What is early music?

Facsimiles
What is a good edition?

It is often useful to have a listing of the main composers of a

particular era. This list is of course not complete, and never will be.
Some dates are speculative, and there may be disagreement in the
sources, or new discoveries which change our knowledge. Period
divisions can always be argued over, and differed from region to
region.
I would appreciate it if readers could email me to fill in any glaring
omissions, or to correct an error. This list was originally compiled
when I was teaching some years ago, and there might be some
improvements necessary.
Abbreviations:
fl. flourished (ie. we don't know the dates, but this is when he/she
was working)
c. circa (about)
Search tip:
Use Ctrl + F or Find from your Edit menu to put in the composer's
name or a particular date.
