or pump components.

2.

SCOPE
This procedure covers the balancing of impellers at ITT Goulds Pumps Korea Operation,
located in Cheong-won, Korea.

DEFINITIONS
4.1.

Balancing
A procedure by which the location of the mass center is checked and if necessary,
adjusted to within the specified limits of the center of rotation.

4.2.

Balancing Machine
A machine that provides a measure of the unbalance in a part.

4.3.

Unbalance
Variance of the mass distribution that prevents the center of mass coinciding with the
center of rotation of the part.

4.4.

Static Balance
When the unbalanced masses are adjusted in a single plane.

4.5.

Dynamic Balance
When the unbalanced masses are adjusted in two planes.

4.6.

Spin Balance
A method of performing the balance measurement which involves rotating the part
being measured. To perform a dynamic balance, the part must be spun.

5.

RESPONSIBILITIES
5.1.

Engineering shall be responsible for defining and determining the required balance
standards and grade.

5.2.

Area foreman and/or QA engineer shall be responsible for the performing of the

balancing in accordance with this procedure, also responsible for maintaining of the
balancing machine including tools and arbors.
5.3.

QA engineer shall be responsible for auditing conformance to this procedure and

calibration of the balancing machine.

6.

PROCEDURE
6.1.

The type of balance and tolerances of impeller balancing shall be in accordance with
applicable engineering standards E-2297 or E-2355 depends upon applicable pump
specifications, pump type and model unless otherwise specified. If specific balancing
quality grade is required by purchase order and/or specification, it shall be applied.

6.2.

Impeller balancing shall be performed after trimming of the impeller to required

diameter.

6.3.

Impeller radius and weight shall be checked and recorded prior to the balancing.

6.4.

Balancing machine shall be selected depends upon impeller size and weight.

6.5.

To determine the unbalance weight and location by initial running of the balancing
machine.

6.6.

To remove unbalanced weight as grind out the specific surface of the impeller by air
grinder and/or sand paper.

6.7.

After grinding, re-run the balancing machine in order to check the unbalance weight
and location.

6.8.

Repeat procedure above para. 6.5 to 6.7 until unbalanced level is within the required
tolerance.

7.

ACCEPTANCE CRITERIA
7.1.

The final unbalanced weight shall be within the required balancing quality grade in
as G1.0 of ISO 1940-1 in accordance with purchase order requirement and ITP.

8.

REPORT
8.1.

Balancing worksheet or record shall be maintained in Goulds work order file.

8.2.
