CHAIN RULE
Definition : When the quantities of different kinds are connected to one other so that we
know how much of one quantity is equivalent to a given quantity of a second, etc. we can
determine how much of the lost kind is equivalent to the given quantity of first kind by
the chain rule.
Direct Proportion and Indirect Proportion : If inverse or decrease a quantity Q1
causes increase or decrease of another quantity Q2 in the same event then Q1 is directly
promotional to Q2.
Q2 => Q1

Q2

so
I.
II.
III.
IV.

Number of person amount of work done. i.e. more person, more work
Number of days Amount of work i.e. more days, more work
Working rate amount of work i.e. more working. rate, more work
Efficiency of man amount of work, i.e. more efficiency of man, more work

combining i, ii, iii, iv

(man * days * work rate * efficiency ) = ( amount of work )
If increase of a quantity Q1 causes decreases of a quantity Q2 in the same extent then,
Q1 is directly proportional to Q2 => (1/Q2).
v. Number of men = (1 / no. of days), i.e. more the men, less the no. of days required.
IMPORTANT FORMULA
(a) (Man1 * Days1 * Work rate1) / Amount of work done1 = (Man2 * Days2 * Work rate2)
/ Amount of work done2
Remember, " Man days" required per unit work is always same. If fact, Man * Days
specify the volume of job or work.
(b) If in place of men there are engines burning coal for certain number of hours, then the
above equation changes to
(No. of engine1 * Hours1 Consumption Rate1) / Amount of coal burnt2 = (No. of engine2 *
Hours2 Consumption Rate2) / Amount of coal burnt2

because, here the job of engine is to burn the coal.
(c) If number of examiners examining a number of answer books in a number of days by
working a number of hours or day, since the job of examiner is to check the answer book,
then(No. of examiner1 * Day1 * Work Rate1) / No. of answer books checked1 = (No. of
examiner2 * Day2 * Work Rate2) / No. of answer books checked2
Therefore from (a), (b) and (c), it is concluded briefly that.
(N1 * D1 * R1 * E1 / W1) = (N2 * D2 * R2 * E2 / W2)
Where N1, N2 = Number of workers : D1, D2 = Time of work.
R1, R2 = Work rate of worker or machine; E1, E2 = Efficiency of worker or machine
W1, W2 = Amount of work (of same nature) done.
# Efficiency of workers or machine is taken to be unity (=1) if otherwise, not specify in
the problem.
# This formula can be derived by combining (i), (ii), (iii), (iv) and (v) from direct
proportional and indirect proportional.
SOLVED EXAMPLES:
1. If 120 men can do a job in 100 days, in how many days will 150 men do it?
Sol. See, direct and indirect proportion of point (i)
W1 = W2
Since same amount of job is done.
Therefore, N1 * D1 = N2 * D2
=> 120 * 100 = 150 * N2
N2 =80 days.
2. If 18 men working 5 hours a day for 8 days can complete a job, how many men
working 8 hours a day for 6 days will be needed?
Sol. Using,

(N1 * D1 * R1 / W) = (N2 * D2 * R2 / W)
Where N1 = 18, D1 = 8, R1 = 5
N2 = ?, D2 = 6, R2 = 8
=> 18 * 8 * 5 = N2 * 6 * 8
=> N2 = 15 men.
3. One thousand men in a fortress have provisions for 12 days. How long will the
provisions last if 200 more men join them?
Sol. Here amount
(since N1D2 = N2D2)

of

work,

i.e.

amount

of

provisions

is

same

Therefore, 1000 * 12 = (1000 + 200) * D2

D2 = 10 days.
4. If 4 men reap 40 acres in 30 days, how many acres will 18 men reap in 12 days?
Sol. N1 * D1 / W1 = N2 * D2 / W2
Where N1 = 4, D1 = 30, W1 = 40
N2 = 18, D2 = 12, W2 = ?
=> (4 * 30 / 40) = (18 * 12 / W2)
=> W2 = 72 acres.
5. If 2 men can build a wall 100 metres long, 3m high and 0.5m thick in 25 days, in how
many days will 20 men build a wall of 60m * 4m * 0.25m
Sol. Here the amount of job is the volume of the wall built.
since.
(N1D1 / W1) / (N2D2 / W2)
(W1,W2 are the volume of wall)
=> (12 * 25 / 100 * 3 * 0.5) = (20 * D2 / 60 * 4 * 0.25)
D2 = 6 days.

6. Fifteen men take 21 days of 8 hours each to do a work. How many days of 6 hours
each would 21 women take, if 3 women do as much work as 2 men?
Sol. Since
3 women = 2 men
=> 21 women = 14 men
Therefore, 15 * 21 * 8 = 14 * D2 * 6 (since N1 * D1 * R1 = N2 * D2 * R2)
D2 = 30 days
7. A contractor undertakes to do a piece of work in 40 days. He engages 100 men and
after 35 days he engaged an additional 100 men and completes the work. How many days
behind the schedule would the work have been, if he had.not engaged the additional men?
Sol.
35 days

40 days

B.

C.

100 men started

100 men added

(100 + 100 men finishwork completed

the job )

Change in number of men takes place at point B

Therefore portion after point B is to be considered.
100 * D1 = (100 +100) * 5
=> D1 = 10 days = BD
Therefore If 100 additional men were not engages, 10-5 = 5 days would the work have
been behind the schedule, In diagram., CD represents the time behind the schedule.
8. A contract is to be completed in 56 days and 104 men were set to work, each working
8 hours a day. After 30 days, (2 /5) of the work is finished. How many additional men
may be employed so that work may be completed on time, each man now working 9
hours per day.
Sol. (N1 * D1 * R1 / W1) = (N2 * D2 * R2 / W2)
=> {(104 * 30 * 8) / (2 / 5)} = {(104 + x) * (56-30) * (9) / ( 1- (2/5))}

9. Ten men being to work together on a job, but after some days, 4 of them leave. As a
result the job which could have been completed in 40 days is completed in 50 days. How
many days after the commencement of the work did the man leave?
Sol. total job assigned = 10 * 40 = 400 man days
say after x days of the commencement of work 4 men leave
therefore 4 man work for x days
so M1D1 = M2D2 + M3D3
10*40 = 4*x + 6*50
( since 6 men work through 50 days )
400 = 4x + 300
then x = 25
they left 25 days after the commencement of work
10. Four lorries carrying 4 tons each move 128 tons in 8 days. In how many days will6
lorries carrying 3 tons each move 540 tons?
Sol. {(N1*D1*R1)/W1} = {( N2*D2*R2)/W2}
N1 = 4, D1 = 8, R1 = 4, W1 = 120
N2. = 6, D2 = D2, R2. = 3, W2 = 540
D2 = 30 DAYS

11. A hostel is provisional for 250 students of 35 days. After 5 days, a fresh batch of 25
student were admitted to the hostel. Again after 10 days a batch of 25 student left the
hostel. How long will the
remaining provision survive?
Sol. After 5 days
25 student added

N1 = 250 + 25
N1 = 275
A 10 days 10 days, 25 student left
so D1 = 10
when 25 student left then N2 = 275 - 25 = 250
so remaining food provision at ND = 250*(35-5) sudden day
ND = N1D1 + N2D2
(250*30) = (275*10) + (250*x)
x = 19
12. A garrison of 3000 men has provision of 25 days when gives at the rate of 900 g per
head. At the end of day, a reinforcement arrives and if was found that now the provision
will last to days more when given at the rate of 840 g per head. What is the strength of
reinforcement?
Sol. let strength of reinforcement be x remaining food provision after 11 = 3000*(2511)*900
total man after 11 days (3000+x)
so 3000*14*900 = (3000+x)*10*840
x = 1500
The enforcement had 1500 men

= 8 diesel engines of 2nd type
R1 = (1 / 5) and (1 / 8)
W1 = 900 litres, W2 = ?
Since amount work = Diesel consumption
{6 * 5 * (1 / 5) / 900} = {9 * 8 * (1 / 8) / W2)
= 1350
Therefore, diesel required 1350 litres.
14. Two coal. loading machine each working 12 hours per day for 8 day handles 9000.
tonnes of coal with an efficiency of 80 % set to handle 12000 tonnes of coal in 6 days.

Sol. (N1 * D1 * R1 * E1 / W1) = (N2 * D2 * R2 * E2 / W2)
N1 = 2, R1 = 12 hr/day
N2 = 3, R2 =?
E1 = (90/100)W1 = 9000
E2 = (80/100)W2 = 12000

wages are 50 per week and B's wages are 42.50 per week. What 'A' would have charged
for doing a piece of work for which B received Rs. 340.
Sol. Total wage = total amount of work
Wage rate = work rate
(N1 * D1 * R1)/(W1) = (N2 * D2 * R2)/(W2)
[{1 * (5/2) * 50}/W1] = [{1 * (10/3) * 42.50}/340]
W1 = 300
