Student Working Rights and Prospects in Ireland

Non-visa National Students: If you are from an EU member state or one of the countries of the EEA or
Switzerland, you are entitled to come to work in Ireland. You do not need an employment permit.

Visa National Students: Only students attending a course of at least one year (25 academic weeks)

will be permitted to take up casual employment. The stamp placed in your passport by the Garda
National Immigration Bureau (GNIB) will indicate whether you can take up casual employment. Casual
employment is defined as up to 20 hours part time work per week, or full time work during normal
College holiday periods. Such work must not interfere with your course attendance.

Prospects in Ireland for Visa Nationals: The Third Level Graduate Scheme allows non-EEA students
who have graduated on or after 1 January 2007 with a level 7 degree to remain in Ireland for 6
months. Those with a degree at levels 8-10 can remain for 12 months. This allows them to find
employment and apply for a work permit or Green Card permit. To find out more about the Scheme
