Earlier this year a bill to license

a specific group of naturopaths
who refer to themselves as
Naturopathic Physicians was
introduced. This bill, if passed
by the legislature and signed
into law by the Governor would
not only eliminate the ability of
Traditional Naturopaths like
myself, but, would in effect
restrict access to practitioners
as currently exists. In addition
to this restrictive and monopolistic bill, additional ramifications exist for other practitioners. In addition to numerous
natural health organizations,
the PA Medical Society submitted an objection letter to this
proposed legislation when it
was still in the Professional
Licensure Committee of the
House. Their objection is in
part: Naturopaths favor a holistic approach to patient care
with non-invasive treatment,
and encourage minimal use of
surgery and drugs. By their own
credo they seek to restore and
maintain optimal health in their
patients by emphasizing natures inherent self-healing
process. Much of the scope of
practice they would be granted
by this bill is antithetical to their
philosophy, but the real concern is patient safety. There is
simply no amount of naturo-

pathic training that can prepare

a practitioner of those arts to
engage in serious elements of
traditional medicine. A naturopath who is concerned enough
about a patient to order a CAT
scan should immediately refer
that patient to a physician. The
bill also creates logistical headaches for the state. Fewer than
one hundred naturopaths
would qualify for licensure
under this bill, requiring the
State Board of Medicine to
establish and maintain the
necessary infrastructure for a
handful of people. Most Pennsylvania Naturopaths would
remain unlicensed after this bill
is enacted, and many of them
oppose the legislation.
In addition to these comments
from the PA Medical Society,
this proposed legislation has
massive arbitrary and capricious context, promotes allopathic modalities that are not
even close to anything natural
or naturopathic, provides for
an exclusionary situation, adds
massive costs to the state
budget to oversee and construct the proposed context of
the legislation as well as other
issues that this small article
does not have the space to
address. To help address this

insane piece of legislation, natural health practitioners in the

Commonwealth as well as the
Traditional Naturopaths are
starting to band together to
provide a united front in the
battle to oppose and defeat this
legislation that is now currently
in the House Rules Committee.
With this stated, any Traditional
Naturopath may join the Facebook group, PA Traditional Naturopaths. Large amounts of
letters and phone calls are also
needed to the members of the
PA House of Representatives to
inform them that the citizens of
the Commonwealth are opposed to House Bill 612. With
the start up of a Traditional
Naturopaths Association in
Pennsylvania, the ability to help
fund a registered lobbyist to
have a presence in the Capitol
speaking with the members of
the General Assembly to educate them on what a naturopath does as well as the reason
that this current legislation is
not a good bill or proposed law
for the citizens of the Commonwealth, the practitioners in the
Commonwealth and the business climate in the Commonwealth. If you would be interested in contributing or assisting in this fight, please contact

REAMS BRIX CHART

The chart on page #3 of this
newsletter is a Brix chart to
help assist you in this years
garden. By using a refractometer and analyzing the
crops, you can see if they are
healthy, have the correct
nutrients, if this is a food you
want to have in your home, if
the soil need to be amended,
and related. The higher the
Brix that the crop presents
with, the more nutrition that
is available for the animal or

human that are consuming

this product. The lower the
Brix reading, the more you
want to avoid this product as
it will actually not be of any
benefit to you, the livestock
or the compost pile. When
one starts by making sure the
soil is correct, then the plants
that one is growing will have
more nutrients available for
growth and production. This
is a very inexpensive way of
getting usable nutrition into

your body. Remember,

health starts in the soil. The
more available minerals to
the plant, the more minerals
that are available to you and
the better your health will be.
In recent years several grocery store chains and farmers
at farmers markets have
been displaying signs with
the crops Brix reading. By
using the attached chart, you
will have a tool to help you
make better choices.

The refractometer is one piece

of equipment every one should
have and use.

SCIENTISTS AND GMOS

Scientists who called on
world powers to re-evaluate
the future of agriculture and
seek sustainability rather
than corporate profits? Dont
be surprised if you havent
heard this as the mainstream
media wont touch this story.
Eight-hundred scientists recently make such a demand.
They made it first over a decade ago and they have updated it over the years, adding
signatures and release dates.
Still global powers have all
but ignored their calls. The
Institute of Science in Society
is a non-profit group of scientists from around the world,
dedicated to bringing an end
to what they refer to as the
dangerous GMO
experiment. In their open
letter to the world, they have
highlighted why governments
need to stop genetically modified crops now before
there are irreversible effects

on the health of the people

and the health of the earth at
large. The Open Letter from
World Scientists to All Governments calls for
the immediate suspension
of all environmental releases
of GM crops and products,
both commercially and in
open field trials, for at least 5
years. They also
want patents on organisms,
cell lines, and living things
revoked and banned. Such
patents threaten food security, sanction biopiracy of
indigenous knowledge and
genetic resources, violate
basic human rights and dignity, compromise healthcare,
impede medical and scientific research and are against
the welfare of animals. As
Anthony Gucciardi recently
detailed on NaturalSociety,
this would be bad news for
Monsanto following the recent Supreme Court decision

that they have the right to

patent life. In the beginning,
after its first draft in 1999,
the letter had just over 300
signatures. Since then, its
grown significantly. At the
writing of this article, the
document has 828 signatures representing 84 different countries. While we are
told by Monsanto and the
FDA that GMOs are nothing
to worry about and instead
safe tools for the future of
agriculture, a growing number of esteemed scientists
seem to disagree. So, whos
listening? The letter has been
presented to numerous governments and organizations,
including the U.N. Commission on Sustainable Development, the U.N. Convention on
Biological Diversity, the World
Trade Organization, and yes,
even the U.S. Congress.

POISON IVY
The root is reddish and branching; the leaves
rather large, three-parted (which will readily
distinguish it from the five-parted Ampelopsis). The central leaflet has a longer stalk,
the lateral ones are almost stalk less. The
leaflets are entire when young, but when fullgrown they are variously indented, downy
beneath, thin and about 4 inches long. They
abound with an acrid juice, which darkens
when exposed to air, and when applied to
the skin produces the inflammation and
swelling referred to. When dry, the leaves are
papery and brittle, sometimes with black
spots of exuded juice turned black on drying.
The flowers are in loose, slender clusters or
panicles, in the axils of the leaves and are
small, some perfect, others uni-sexual, and
are greenish or yellowish-white in color. They

blossom in June, and are followed by

clusters of small, globular, ducolou
red, berry-like fruit. There are almost
as many antidotes for the inflammation caused by Poison Ivy as for the
bites of the rattlesnake. Alkaline lotions, especially carbonate of soda,
alum and hypo-sulphite of soda, are all
recommended, and the person is advised to moisten the skin constantly
with the agent in solution. A hot solution of potassium permanganate applied locally is also recommended as a
solution to the exposure. Rhus venenata has similar poisonous qualities.
The use of homeopathic Rhus Toxicodendron or Rhu Tox has been the
first item I have suggested to clients

over the years to help deal with the

accidental exposure to this plant. If
the person is lucky enough to notice
exposure immediately, then one
should look for the antidote near bye.
Jewel Weed usually is one of the
plants that is growing within a few feet
of the poison ivy plant. By breaking
this plant stem and smearing the
plant sap on the affected area, it will
usually help neutralize the effect of
the poison ivy exposure. For more
details on either of these plants that
seem to be a summer problem, please
refer to a quality herbal book. For a
vial of Rhu Tox, please contact my
office as it is a normal stock item.
