This is the contents page of music magazine Kerrang.

The main colours used are black and

white however yellows and reds have also been used to help certain features stand out.
Black and white are very simple colours they have been used to the reader can see
everything clearly.

The design of Kerrang’s contents page is mostly combined with images as this will appeal
more to the audience because most people enjoy looking at pictures in magazines,
therefore there is a greater chance of the audience focusing in on the key articles. It is
obvious to the reader that they are on the contents page as a bold headline which is located
at the top of the page states ‘Contents’ and is in a bold font and is easily noticeable at the
top right hand side of the page. The majority of the page is taken up by the main features
and articles in the magazine are displayed in boxes which contain pictures of the band or
artist of which there is an article about. The images also help the target audience to see
what type of music is featured in the magazine, in this case its rock. The page numbers are
written underneath each image to help to reader to locate that article. The image on the top
left is much bigger than the rest of the images this is to put emphasis on that article as it a
main feature of that issue. The text is located on the right had side of the page in a column
this lists the least important articles in the magazine. These articles are not supposed to be
attention grabbing, which is why they are just informing the reader via text. Underneath the
text there is a pug which is in red this is to grab the reader’s attention. The rest of the space
on the page is used in the top left hand corner of the page where a blurb of this issue is
located. The contents page of Kerrang is clear and easy to read and is designed in a simple
way and there is no over-lapping and boxes have been used to identify the key features and
articles.

The images on the contents are arranged in a simple way and are no over-lapping each
other which makes it clearer for the reader to see what the image is of. The biggest photo is
of the punk band "The Bronx" it is much larger than anything else on the page this is to
show the reader that this is the main feature in this week’s issue. The other images are also
of other artists and bands featured in the magazine this is to show the audience what genre
of music the magazine has included. These images have all been included because they are
the main features of the magazine and what the target audience is more likely to enjoy
reading.

The pose of the images don’t give the reader a specific impression to the magazine they are
simply to make it easier for the reader to understand. The images used are either from
music gigs or a photo of the artist or band looking into the camera this is so it is easy for the
audience to recognise the artist or band from a glance. Their style, hair and make-up are
typical of the rock genre.
The words used on the contents page are conventional of those that are normally used as
they are simplistic and easy to read. The more important features in the magazine are
represented by the size, effect and colour of the text. The word ‘Contents’ stands out the
most because of its colour and size.

The language used is also conventional of contents page as it directly addresses the reader.
No slang or complicated words have been used so it’s simpler for the reader to understand
and locate the article, feature or band that they are looking for or interested in.

Overall this page looks appealing and positive. Despite this contents page simplicity it looks
modern and well turned out. From the images and texts the readers gets a good insight of
what the magazine includes. The contents page appeals to a wide audience as shows various
music bands and artists instead of just one main image or feature.
