Batchwise Countercurrent Extraction
Batchwise Countercurrent Extraction
Two solutes may be separated from each other by selective extraction if their
distribution coefficients are sufficiently different . the efficiency of the extraction
depends on the ratio of the distribution coefficients , or the separation factor, S:
S=Kx/Ky
If the separation factor is very large or very small (e.g., 10 4 or 10-4 ). The two
solutes may practically be separated quantitively by simple methods such as
those previously discussed. But if the separation factor is near unity , special
schemes must be devised for fractionally extracting the solutes. One of the most
effective procedure now described is more accurately labeled batchwise
countercurrent extraction with center feed. A discussion of the concept of
theoretical plates as applied to separation schemes is given in Appendix 6.
