An Example of Green Building Architecture, Alien Space Station,

Hyderabad, India

It is located just next to the citys IT hub, Financial sector, Hospitality

services and the upcoming US consulate in Gachibowli, Hyderabad.

Aliens Space Station is an integrated township that covers about 20

acres of land, out of which 16 acres is lush greenery with breathtaking
views

Only 20 % of the total land is used for the construction of permanent

structures and the rest of the 80% of land is just beautifully
landscaped gardens.

A dual distribution system has been adopted and sand-filtered water

from the Ochiai Municipal Wastewater Treatment Plant is chlorinated
and used as toilet-flushing water in 25 highrise business premises and
for stream augmentation, as illustrated in the figure. The system,
which has been successfully operated since 1984, is supplying treated
wastewater up to a maximum 8,000 m3/day.

Mobile Water Treatment system for supply of potable water in

Calexico, California
Key Features

The water treatment systems are capable of producing drinking water

from almost any raw water source within about an hour. Each system
comprises complete, automated and integrated micro-filtration
systems, and in some cases, reverse osmosis systems as well. Using
state-of-the-art hollow fiber membrane technology, the systems
transform contaminated water into water that is free from harmful
bacteria, cysts, and particles.

Private-Public-Partnership

Creating energy from landfill gas in the tune of 274,800,000 kW-hr.

City of Toronto spent $12 million CAD to build a gas collection system
into landfill site. Easter Power Developers spent $20 million CAD to
install power plant.

waste landfill to convert captured methane gas into electricity
providing power for roughly 24,000 homes.
Key Features

vertical gas collection wells were installed within the landfill waste site
by City of Toronto. The Site is encircled by roughly 10,000 linear
meters of dual header piping for transmission of gas from the wells
and trenches to the central blower/flaring station.

Centrifugal blowers located at the central blower/flare station apply

vacuum to the collection piping to extract LFG from the trenches and
wells located in the landfill.

The collected gas is then directed to the power plant for generation of
electricity.
Waste Processing Plant in Alexandria, Egypt through PPP
Key Features

150,000 tons of compost are produced and sold every year to local
farmers and thus contribute to the development of agricultural
activities in the region.

i) Filter Drain
ii) Permeable Paving
iii) Retention pond for all storm water runoff from building and from
the paved surface.
Extremely successful in removing the impurities and as well as to
reduce quantity of surface run-off means reduce the risk of flooding.
2. Beacon South Quarters, Dublin, Ireland
High quality high density development
Extensive and intensive green roof planned, designed and constructed
on the open spaces available on top of 2nd floor to reduce the quantity
of runoff from the paved surfaces to meet the discharge quantity
requirements of Dublin city council.
Very effective with minimum maintenance and it enhances the amenity
and aesthetic beauty of the whole development.

new projects and also retrofitted SUDS into their old developments as
much as possible.
Out of the major new developments, Britol business parks (north and
south of Bristol) had implemented number of SUDS techniques to make
it a Green Development.
They retrofitted SUDS into the car park area of the International airport.
Apart from the above the council is making their utmost effort to
implement SUDS techniques to reduce the flooding risk as well as
making the city green by capturing the pollutants flowing in the storm
water runoff.

comfortable external conditions possible through natural and passive
cooling measures using vegetation and water. Significant reductions in
outdoor air temperatures were claimed. The ratio of soft to hard
landscaping was proposed at 60:40, with vegetation integrated with the
built areas as much as possible. Vegetation species of different heights
were used to maximise the filtration of air at different levels. Planted
screens were designed to channel prevailing winds into the site,
enhancing their cooling. Water was used throughout the site in
fountains, water walls, sprays, cascades, ponds. (Brophy, et.al., p. 14).
Masdar, Abu Dhabi
Dense, energy-efficient, pedestrian-friendly neighbourhoods of canals
and cool urban squares, based on traditional Arabic forms and
ecological principles. Masdar tied traditional Arabic urban form with a
futurist, zero-carbon, zero-waste, city powered by renewable energy
and supported by sustainable transportation. Masdar is designed as a
walkable city in the middle of the desert.
